Official Palm Centro Image Leaked
An apparently official Sprint branded Palm Centro image was leaked to David Ciccone of Mobility Today. It is the first high quality Centro image to surface in the blogosphere.
We are pleasantly surprised by the attractiveness of the photo. Previously leaked blurry images did not represent the device as well. The Centro may indeed be an ideal balance between function and small form factor for consumers interested in a “bite-sized” convergent device.

Palm’s Centro is expected to retail for $99, the lowest launch price for a Palm smartphone ever. Although meaningfully smaller than existing Treo smartphones, the Centro has a full qwerty keyboard, touch screen, and will work on Sprint’s super high speed data network.

Wow - that looks really great!
I like it too….sleek!!
ok, this may be obvious to the rest of you, but has palm kinda taken a step backwards with this new product? an entry-level treo? what is the point of this when nearly all of the treo-devoted are clamoring for wifi, thinner styling, faster clockspeeds, more memory, bigger screens, etc? as per engadget’s open letter to palm, they need to get with the times or continue to be left in the dust. hard to believe the innovators of the original palm pilot and treo have produced this. don’t even get me started on the foleo…
If that keyboard is actually usable and the price is $99 I believe Palm has created a well-balanced low-end smartphone.
This thing is sleek, cheap, and has all the same features that my 700p has and is only $99. How do I know about the features?? Not at liberty to discuss ;)
It seems that with this device Palm again made double use of the Answer and Hangup buttons….which we know was a great pain with previous models and a relief with the recent models, but then again, it’s an entry level device
How do you figure that the Green and Red buttons do double duty? It still has 6 hard buttons just like the 650, 700p, and 755p.
Now that we see a professional photo, the Centro looks quite slick.
For those who think the keyboard is too cramped for two thumbs remember that text-junkies only key with one finger any way.
With Centro’s QWERTY layout, they’ll text circles around their friends.
can’t wait for the unlock-gsm version.. =p~
Yeah, waiting for an unlocked gsm device, for $99 too, of course….
it looks ….. low end as well.
…I just wanna know when the release date is! it looks nice, but wanna physically see it! Love my 700p, but if Centro is better, why not check it out?

If they can really get it out the door for less than $100, they might be on to a winner here. Hopefully it has directional buttons under the ring around the “Palm” logo. There’s certainly space.
The keys look a bit funny.. I expect this is a render as opposed to a photochop though.
I like the look of that multi-IM app too. I wonder if those people know their screennames are on a leaked image.
As to Brandon’s question, presumably this is not an attempt to expand/retain the existing Treo user base so much as a way to bring new customers in. Since it appears to be aimed squarely at consumers, I’d expect a lot less of docs, spreadsheets and tasks, and a lot more of IM, text, media, web, games and so on.
If they were smart, they’d get the basics (for this market) right first time: stability (!), a decent Bluetooth stack, a usable web browser, media player, 3.5mm headphone jack, SDHC slot, a couple of unique, top-notch Palm-only games - (perhaps Bike or Die and Arcade Reality?), a puzzle game or two. Anything that doesn’t work perfectly, leave it out. Don’t ship with anything that only ‘kinda works’, people hate that.
I think this one has a chance.
omg! palm sucks ! wtf is this supposed to be? when are they going to release an actual new phone?
Looks great. I hope it has all the features everyone wants and is still $99. I can’t wait to make mine balance like that too!
You gotta be kidding me? This is the new smartphone? For $99 I can’t help but wonder what we’ll be missing or downgrading to rather than upgrading.
If this phone is flimsy, cheap and missing upgraded features you you must assume Palm is becoming the WalMart of smartphones and selling to the masses. I find it a good kick in the pants to those of us that have been loyal Palm customers and have been waiting for Wifi, better camera resolution, etc.

Let’s see…what are Palm’s choices:
(1) Keep making expensive phones like the Treo 650 and go out of business.
(2) Make less expensive phones like the Motorola Q and maybe not go out of busi
mobile is very important instrument and singnificiant model to the talking another person
wifi, better cam, better browser, upgrade in palm os perhaps… palm has a lot of work to do to keep me as a loyal customer! why would the worlds leader in smartphones stoop to the level equivalant of chinese lead-based toys? CHEAP!!! if I want cheap i’ll go with a crackberry! com’mon palm!!
