Not to be confused with the Treo Lennon expected from Vodafone on September 12, which is expected to have a smaller and lighter form factor than the exsting Treo 700w models, this Windows Mobile 5.0 device is purported to have the same form factor but more memory.

  1. A mere 6 months after dumping the 700w on the public Palm has released the 700w”x”…

In late 2004 they released the Treo 650 with about 15MB of usable memory, obvious to the first people trying to transition over

from the 160×160 screen of the Treo 600. Some people were “bought off” with the 128MB SD card (which has little melioration for missing internal RAM). About 6-7 months later Palm released a working firmware to get about 90% of the internal memory of the Treo 600 (to which the Treo 650 was allegedly an improvement).

About a year-and-a-half later the Treo 650x was finally released (a.k.a. Treo 700p). Not as terrible a release as the Treo 650… but still desperately needs a firmware update.

It seems Palm is putting much more energy into appeasing the Windows OS side of their business than taking care of even the most obvious of Palm/Access OS issues.

Funny, as I was suggesting on the boards back in November 2004 they needed to release a 650x (similar to the Palm Vx which made up for the measly 2MB in the original Palm V). Maybe Palm finally got around to learning from the “canaries in the coalmine” that are the people who actually *use* their products. (I’m not waiting on my commission check anytime soon, though…)

  2. Don’t know how happy I am with this, wish I could exchange mine for the Windows version, I wonder if they’ll let me do an exchange???

  3. We have 3 Palm 650s. One was broken by accident and replaced with a 700 by Verizon Insurance. After 3 weeks we finally got a 650 to replace the 700. The 700 is terrible compared to the 650. Both screen resolution and operation wise.

The main complaints I have with the 650 is the camera resolution and an occasional reset. The Bluetooth problems are in Verizon limiting profile access.

The Documents to Go problems that appear as a complaint on many forums can be solved by a utility on Dataviz site that clears Database and temp files

  4. Dear Joad,

Your “650x” comment is ignorant at best. In fact. most posts on here tend to forget that these devices are roughly 50% PDA and 50% wireless phone/modem. As Palm’s first EvDO device, there was a huge development expense for the radio alone, not to mention the software to support it. I happen to think that the download speeds I now have are worth the upgrade. Streaming radio is pretty cool when I get tired of the 4GB of music on my card, neither of which will work on a 650. I also use Bluetooth DUN on my laptop. Now I don’t need to sit in a coffee shop to get decent access. The camera is much better too. All in all, I’m happy with the upgrades.

  5. 650 was realistically unusable for serious Enterprise and admin use. Palm aimed at the “Bling-Bling” customers who wanted a flashy web-enabled phone they could show off to their homies as they play Bejewelled… and that part was successful. Some of us trudged through the lousy internal memory with VFS, Powerrun and other kludges because we absolutely cringe at the PPC/Winmob interface and apps. But the years Palm twiddled their thumbs let Winmob and the others make strides forward (as serious users couldn’t wait any longer for Palm and the Treos to take us as a serious market). Now we’re stuck with Palm putting much more attention into the Winmob Treos… Oh well… follow the herd, Palm. You don’t know what you had until it’s gone.

  6. Sorry guys but as a Sprint employee i hate to break this to you but Sprint isn’t going to have a windows version of the 700. In fact we aren’t even releasing anymore phones this month. Also, if a phone was to be released it’s always done on a sunday not a thursday. These rumors have been circulating for months since verizon got the 700w. Verizon paid out the anus to have exclusive rights to the windows version of the phone. Initially they enjoyed the Treo buffs excited to have windows mobile but, the usual problems with windows mobile have not been resolved and the 700w is still riddled with bugs. The 700p is a welcomed upgrade from the 650. It has a faster processor, double the internal memory, an updated browswer and also the bluetooth version has been upgraded from its predecessor. Anybody who thinks the 700p is pointless is extremely ignorant to the specs and usage of the phones (emphasis on “phones”).

  7. The 700wx is not a big improvment in terms of memeory (64 Mo user ram and 60 Mo for 700w), but the huge improvement is the GPS integration.
I hope that in the next month Palm will launch a Treo 750 px.

  8. I think that palm ought to make ONE definite good and usefull tréo, and make a good profit while making its customers happy. But instead they have a new release every few months and tréodites (tréo users) are trying to find what works best for them and those that have to have the latest are trying to keep up! Come on Palm, get your act together!

  9. ?? creoleflava904 says:700P has faster proc than 650P??

Since when? I thought they both used the 312 MHz processor

  10. So as a Sprint employee will they ever come out with a Treo Windows based? I love my 650, but I also love sports. I want a windows based phone so I can streamline ESPN from my slingbox. Does anyone have any experience streaming from a slingbox? I want to upgrade, but with Sprint I can’t unless I switch to another brand.

  11. To the sprint employee what is your title there?

I question this because our national account manager for Sprint has been telling me that the Win version of the Palm is coming. He has gone as for as setting a meeting up with us, Sprint, and Palm to go over the road map for Palm and its relationship with Sprint and Verizon. Palm will show to us their plan for the next few years and how they can fit into our environment. This meeting requires a NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) and they are going to leave with me a Palm 700w on the Sprint network to demo.

As for the Palm 700w on Verizon (which I am demo’ing) it is a fantastic device. Those who try to knock it, I doubt have ever used one. From the ability to VPN into our corporate network and RDP servers and manage AD, telent into routers, to email, and even running Tom Tom navigation system with a bluetooth receiver. All is working great and I will never switch to any thing else then Windows Mobile 5.

Microsoft has also stepped up to the plate and with Exchange 2003 with service pack 2, Window mobile devices are beginning to replace the outdate Palm OS and Blackberry’s.

  12. so you mean to tell me that it is safe to say that palm is nolonger focusing on the os cause windows are paying to be the os of choice? and that being the cause should I go for the treo 700w and will it function as fast or faster? and is the processors the same the 650 and the 700? if so can we just flash our 650’s or are they really want our money that bad?

  13. “This meeting requires a NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement)”

But you’re posting about it here?
