Finger painting is not just for kids. At least it’s not only for those who are chronologically young. SimToGo recently released Finger Painter version 1, and celebrated by giving away a copy per day for a week on mytreo.net. I was lucky enough to win one (and to win the Grand Prize of a copy of each of SimToGo’s games!).
I have taken to using Finger Painter as an alternative to playing Bejeweled. If I come up with a decent design, it gives me a sense of accomplishment, rather than knowing I’ve wasted time playing a game. You won’t create great works of art, but if you want to doodle it’s great fun.
You start with a blank canvas, and you can choose the color of the background. From there you get a wide palette of texture/color gadgets, as well as solid colors with a variety of “pen” tips. There is no learning curve, and if you don’t mind having a child handle your Treo, it can keep a little one busy for hours.
When I first looked at Finger Painter I thought about the DialByPhoto contest and how great this would be to create some custom wallpapers. It didn’t take me long to come up with something I liked far better than just using a photo behind my dial screen!
The more I thought about it, and the more I viewed the first entries in the Finger Painter contest, the more I thought “why stop at just wallpaper for my Treo?” The resolution is not great, but tiled, they make fantastic Windows desktop wallpapers.
You can see how simple it is in these screen shots. Choose your canvas color, and get started.
Choose a textured brush, or choose a color for your simple lines. Overlapping the different brushes gives some neat effects.
Even the worst artist can come up with something worth hanging on the refrigerator door!
Your finished chef d’oeuvres can be saved to RAM or your sd card as .bmp files. I would love to see the ability to save them as .jpg, as well as being able to specify where on the card they are saved. (I would rather save them in \DCIM than the root directory.)
I encourage all of you with children, or an inner child!, to give Finger Painter a try. It may not be PhotoShop, but it sure is fun!
