Double Dose of Treo Speculation

Engadget’s editors have uncovered two potentially scintillating rumors regarding Palm’s plans for their Treo Line, both current and future models.

First, and of great importance to many long-suffering Treo 650 users is that shortly after the Palm 700p is released, a major firmware patch will be made available, code-named “LowTide.” Features included in this release will be the long-promised Blackberry Connect software, support for Fat32 4GB SD cards, MobiTV support for Cingular users, and WiFi drivers for the Palm WiFi card!

Some users may feel this update is a little late in arriving after being promised Blackberry software years ago and Palm’s claims that the WiFi drivers would never work on the 650. Other users may see it as a noble delivery on promises made, which is magnified when one considers the fact that Palm is potentially releasing the 700p in a few short weeks. For Palm to release such a major update that could cause loyal 650 users to hold off on 700p sales shows a strong sense of loyalty to their passionate supporting users.

The second tidbit is in regards to the 700p - we’ve seen photos with a big Sprint logo slapped on the upper portion of the phone, but now new images have surfaces showing the 700p adorned with a Verizon badge. We’ve heard that the 700p is set to debut on Sprint in mid-to-late May, but now could Verizon swoop in and release it first, or perhaps launch simultaneously? Needless to say, this news will make Verizon subscribers who are not enamored of the 700w very happy.

Please remember that these are rumors, and not authoritatively-confirmed pieces of news.

Note: It appears that these pictures originally surfaced on the messageboard of TreoCentral

  1. 700p GSM…PLEASE.

  2. The US needs an unlocked GSM 700P, and the rest of the world demands it!!!!

  3. give us 3 rumors, and it can be a treo of Treo rumors….

  4. What about GSM version

  5. Don’t fret - it’ll come. Start sellin’ off your 650’s now while they’re still worth SOMETHING :-) Best place to get an unlocked GSM Treo is through Rogers of Canada.

  6. Interesting experience at Verizonwireless.com. On or around April 17th 2006 I logged into verizonwireless with my account id etc. and performed a search on Treo 700p. It came back with two results that were clearly internal URLs. Didn’t capture them - I know..stupid…I figured they’d b there when I had more time to explore. In any case these were coding urls. By that I mean when a programmer is building code, webpages, etc. there are often little url trails if this is being done for a website or intranet. I didn’t have time to hack around and get to where these were leading but I have seen these before and my guess is that some programmer at Verizon left the back door open while building some instructional/pdf/brochure pages for the Verizon website. They are gone now. I pressume other ppl were performing the same search and the programmer was alerted to the hole.

Just leads me to believe that while all the talk is focused on Sprint…VERIZON is certainly preparing for a 700p release of their own.

  7. BUZZ on the pics of the 700p from Verizon. It looks like the hard buttons are still from the 700w. It’s almost as if the phone in the pic is simply displaying images made from the 650’s screens.

I was one of the many that already had a 600 and waited in line, paying top dollar, for a 650. While I love it and use it every day, what’s supposed to be so much better about the 700p, especially if Palm may release updated software for the 650? A prettier body? We all see what that did for Anna Nicole. (Ok if the 700p asks me “Duhyya like mah bodeeee?” in Anna Nicole’s voice, I’m sold.)

Wow. Palms that run Windows and now Macs that run Windows. Aren’t there only four horsemen of the apocalypse?

  8. I’m sorry, but those photos are shopped. That looks like a Verizon-stamped 700w with PalmOS pix pasted in, the blurred to cover up the bad shop job.

But if/when the 700p comes out, I’d so ditch my POS 650 and snag one. Hopefully the 700p actually works all the time. Lord knows my 650 crashes all the time. Friggin’ POS.

  9. hmm palm should also realese a ptt client that can work on any network, having a good equipment, whit office kind like aplicattions, and other stuff, is necesary to have the client

  10. eeehhhmmm….

any big different between 700p, 700w?

  11. I have a very strong feeling that the Sprint 700P will offer GSM-lite location based services.. (E911 chip based, using EVDO to download lacale specific maps, directions, and unfortunatley ads)

That alone will get people to pony up for a 700P

Combine that with broadband speed data and upgraded memory, and you can be sure I’ll be racing out to buy one with ever other 650 owner..

BTW - The difference between the Windows and Palm versions of the 700 will be a) OS/application support, and B) the PalmOS version will support the great Sony 320×320 LCD that the 650 currently sports…
