Troubleshooting problems with the Treo 600

This page discusses some common problems you may encounter with the Treo and how to resolve them.

My Treo 600 Screen is not centred! Is this normal?

Yes. The screen is designed to sit slightly more to the left in order to accommodate the lights along the right hand side. You can see these lights if you look at the seam along the right edge of the screen - there are four lights.

My Treo 600 keeps resetting itself in an endless loop. What could be wrong?

Occasionally you may encounter problems between certain combinations of installed software applications. To isolate the issue, try installing one application at a time to determine which application is causing the problem. If possible, contact the maker of the symptomatic software to see if there is a patch or workaround available.

How do I recover from a looping reset?

Looping resets are often caused by a piece of software which tries to force a reset after it has installed itself. Software will force a reset after installation if there are system-wide changes that require the system to be restarted for the new application to function properly. If the new software crashes while being booted by the system, your Treo will enter a looping reset.

There are two ways to get out of the loop:

Method 1: Perform a warm-reset: Hold the up arrow on the 5-way nav and do a pin reset at the same time. Do not let go of the up arrow until you see the Palm logo.

If this is successful then the looping will stop. Your Treo is now in warm-reset mode and will not behave properly. Complete the process by deleting the offending software and most importantly soft reset the Treo afterwards.

Method 2: If the first method fails, the loop may be uninterruptible because of timing issues. Unless you hit the reset at precisely the right point in the loop, you may go back into the loop.

Try this: Go half-way into a hard reset (press the power button next to antenna and pin reset at the same time). WARNING: Do NOT press up to delete all data. At this point your Treo should have stopped looping. Now from this screen do a pin reset and immediately afterwards press the up arrow. If you press the up arrow at exactly the right time then you will break the loop and go into a warm-reset, if you press too late then you're back in the loop. Keep trying!

Note: Do not turn on wireless mode or try to use your Treo while in warm-rest mode. This mode prevents any system extensions from loading and the Treo will behave oddly and with limited functionality. You must perform a soft reset before using your Treo again.

The SD card keeps falling out of my Treo. What can I do to stop this?

Unfortunately SD cards extend just a little higher than the slot on the Treo 600. If you accidentally hit the SD card it often pops out due to the spring loaded action. Here are a couple of suggested workarounds...

  1. Try to avoid hitting the SD card to prevent it from popping out!
  2. Buy a case for the Treo that covers the SD card.
  3. Use a software that warns you that the SD card has come out. The Treo only bleeps once which isn't much use, especially if it is inside your pocket. Check out CardKeeper under Treo Utilities in the Downloads area, or click here.
  4. Fold a length of scotch tape around the top of the SD card such that it adds a single layer per side with the fold at the top, be careful not to cover the contacts on the bottom of the card (I suggest tape halfway down the card is enough). When you insert the card, it will now be snug. The added thickness provides enough friction so that the card will stay put even if it is knocked. You can still remove the card using your fingernail between the edge of the card and the back edge of the slot since most SD cards have a groove you can catch.
  5. A more drastic method is to file down the SD card so that it lies flush with the top of the Treo itself. You should only use this method with extreme caution since it will void your SD card warranty. If you choose to try this then you do so at your own risk.

Good luck!

How can I find out what error caused the last soft reset on my Treo 600?

From the phone dial pad enter ##377 (#*377 on GSM phones or #*#377 on Verizon) then click the dial button. This code displays the last error which caused a soft reset, the program that was running, line number etc. Useful eh?

My Treo 600 rattles slightly. Is this normal?

Many people have reported that their Treo 600 makes a slight rattling sound. Many have speculated that it is caused by the sound on/off switch at the top of the unit. Try holding the switch and see if the unit still rattles. Besides the sound that it makes this does not seem to impair the functionality of the phone or the button in any way.

My Treo 600's vibrate feature stopped working! Is there anything I can do?

Perhaps! There are a few things you can try: First, go to: Calendar App > Sound Preferences Menu > Application: Calendar/Phone/SMS Make sure that on each one: Sound Mode On > Vibrate > On Sound Mode Off > Vibrate > On

Second, if the above didn - we seem to have lost this bit of the page when I moved from the old Wiki, whoops.

There is this horrible buzzing sound!

Ah yes, the buzzing. You can fix that yourself, if you're feeling a little adventurous. We have a page detailing a do-it-yourself Buzz Fix.

How do I prevent my Treo from turning a lone lower case 'i' into upper case?

By default, our Treos will attempt to "autocorrect" various strings in most all text fields. For example, while typing a memo, if you enter "beleive", it will replace it with "believe". This a great feature if you are using English, but not very useful for other languages. In fact, it can be detrimental if a legitimate word in your language is forcibly replaced by something else. A common example is lower case "i" replaced by upper case "I". A means of disabling the autocorrect feature (see Autocorrect_enUS) can be found in the mytreo.net Downloads Section. For further information about this fix, visit the mytreo.net Forums.

My Treo 650's phone keeps turning itself off. What do I do?

The SIM card holder doesn't always keep a nice, snug connection. Take out the holder, remove the SIM card, and place a couple small scraps of paper in the holder. Put the SIM card back in and replace the holder. The scraps of paper will push the SIM card a little more tightly against the contacts, and you'll stop dropping your connection randomly.

UPDATE: Palm have released a newly-redesigned SIM tray to fix this issue. For more information, including the telephone number to call (in the US), see the article in the MTDN News Archives.
