Treo Dictionary

Palm OS has something of a long history now and there are many terms and phrases that are unique to this operating system. The Treo is a rather unique device which adds a level of etymological complexity to the problem, that problem being: What on earth are you people saying?!

Hopefully these definitions will give everyone a point of reference for Palm and Treo specific subjects.

App
Short for application, an app is a program for Palm OS.

Hang Up
This is a button that is displayed on screen while a call is active. Tapping this button will terminate the active call. The same function can be achieved by using the Power/End hard key. Note: On the Sprint PCS Treo 650, this button is labelled "Hang Up All."

Hard Key
This term refers to the four buttons found above the keyboard, on either side of the five-way navigator. Hard keys are a long standing staple of Palm OS hardware design; they are designed to launch the built-in applications, but are also programmable so the user can assign them as they please. Additionally, applications can use the hard keys The hard keys Sometimes called "hard buttons."

Launcher
Basically, the whole shebang. The launcher is the thing that shows you the icons for all your apps and which allows you to select and run an app. Your Treo comes with a defualt, built-in launcher, but there are many third-party options to choose from.

Option
This is a button on the Treo keyboard. It can be found below the "A" button and to the left of the "Z" button. It isn't really marked at all, it's just a sort of solid blue blob.

Radio on/off
This is not an Palm specific term, but it's used often. Since Treo family is hibrid of palm organizer and mobile phone, users have ability to choose between two operating modes: to use Treo as palm organizer only (Radio off) without reception, or to use it as smart phone (Radio on) with reception activated. As you see, there is no fm radio tuner in some Treo models, like some of you may think when you see posts in forum that refers to radio.

Shift
This is a button on the Treo keyboard. It can be found on the bottom row of the keyboard, all the way to the right. It is marked with an arrow pointing up (towards the screen).

TELT
An acronym for "That Endless Loop Thingie." Yes, this is a silly phrase.
