Did you ever wonder what that flashing star means? Or that crosshair icon is all about?

This basic introduction to the various icons found on a CDMA phone will answer those questions. Not all the icons discussed are present on all phones. The icons that display may be different for GSM phones or for network providers outside of the United States. First, on the phone screen (see graphic):

Treo Phone Screen

1. The “star”, "snowflake" or “asterisk”. This icon flashes in the upper left corner of your Treo screen if you’ve received a call, an SMS, or voicemail. If you tap the flashing star, it will take you to a screen with more information. You will need to tap “clear all” for the star to stop flashing.

2. The “crosshair”. This shows whether your location privacy option is turned on or off. This is a GPS setting and most providers recommend you leave this on because it makes “some applications and services easier to use”. If you turn it off, the crosshair will have a red line through it (as shown). Your location is still discoverable by 911 services, but not by other services.

3. The “envelope”. Indicates you have a new voicemail message. Tapping this icon will dial your voicemail box.

4. The “Blue B”. This is your Bluetooth icon and lets you know if your Bluetooth service is on or off. Tapping this icon will take you to the Bluetooth setup screen to setup headsets or other Bluetooth devices.

5. The “Upsidedown Umbrella”. This icon is related to your network service and the number of bars next to it indicate signal strength.

6. The “Battery”. Yes, it shows the amount of charge left in your battery. Tapping this icon will actually give you a small screen with the percentage of battery charge you have left.
