Recommended Software for the Treo 600 and Treo 650

Looking for the best software for your Treo? Don't forget to check out the mytreo.net downloads area where you will find hundreds of treo-tested freeware and shareware titles to download!

Intro

The software on this page has been used by mytreo.net members and is known to be compatible with the Treo 600 or Treo 650. If you're going to spend money on software have a look at these first. It is recommended that when installing ANY paid for software that you run it for a trial period first: both to make sure that it works on your treo without conflicting with other applications, and also to make sure that you're actually going to use it! Sometimes software sounds very tempting and works very well, but a few weeks after buying it you realise that you never actually use it. Also be sure to take a look at the Best Freeware before parting with your hard earned cash.

Utilities

VolumeCare - *Essential* for hearing phone calls in noisy environments, plus has a lot of other features like increasing the volumes of other applications, etc.

RescoLocker - The Treo 650's NVFS implimentation is a little fragile, so one way to help is to lock some of the programs that run all the time into ram, reducing the amount of SavedPrefsLoss occurances. With RLock your Treo 650 can be much more stable, and if you do suffer a reset, less likely to lose preferences! See also FileManagement650.

Butler - This app solves several annoying omissions of the Treo in one go. Allows you to use the Volume buttons to scroll up and down pages; allows you to launch your favorites from any application - not just the Phone App; constantly repeats alerts to ensure you don't miss them; and has six built-in alarms which can be set to repeat on different days. There are other features too, all in the one application.

TreoSelecText - This application is so monumentally useful that most Treo 600 users forget to mention it when they are recommending software because everyone forgets that it's not a built-in feature! On a Treo 600 there is normally no way to select/highlight text without removing the stylus or struggling with a fat and/or stubby finger. Now you can do it! Use the following Shift and 5-Way Rocker combinations to highlight words: Shift+Left, Shift+Right, Shift+Up, Shift+Down, Shift+Center (highlights current word, line, or whole text field).

Softick CardExport II - emulates a USB Mass Storage device (like USB card reader, USB flash drives etc) and doesn't require any additional drivers on modern desktop systems. You can transfer Palm OS applications, images, mp3 files to the card or just use the memory card as a floppy for any data. After connecting the card, it is accessible as any another removable disk.

PdaNet - Software to drive your Treo smartphone as a Wireless Modem for your PC - PdaNet allows your PC to go online by connecting to your Treo smartphone through the Hotsync USB cable.

NVBackup - 650 and up - Need a FREE and relaible backup app for newer NVFS devices? This is IT! It uses a different (undocumented) method for accessing data that theoretically should make it be more reliable than commercial backup programs on crash-prone newer PDAs. Scedule daily incremental backups, or manually add before doing something that might cause a reset.

Web Browsers

WebViewer - ReqWireless - Java-based web browser is probably the fastest browser available for your Treo 600. It requires that you have the Web Sphere Micro Environment installed. Because WebViewer is Java-based, it can't be as fully integrated with the rest of your Treo as well as some other options.

Xiino - This is the current incarnation of a web browser for Palm OS that has a long history. It is much faster than Blazer (the built-in web browser), optimizes data usage, renders sites better, and provides a number of additional useful features.

Media Viewers and Players

Pocket Tunes - NormSoft's music player offers MP3, WMA, Ogg Vorbis and Shoutcast support. It is skinnable and can run in the background. If you want to listen to music on your Treo 600, this is the application to use.

Resco Viewer - The application that drives the (fairly shoddy) camera in the Treo 600 is extremely limited. While it's possible to get it to show you images that you didn't capture with the Treo camera, the viewing experience is so cruddy that what's the point, really? Resco Photo Viewer provides all the options that the built-in application is missing.

Kinoma Player - This is a somewhat expensive application, but if you're interested in looking at video on your Treo 600, there isn't any solution that is more user-friendly. Note that you have to purchase the player and the desktop application to convert video separately! (An alternative freeware, and better in many people's opinion, is the The Core Pocket Media Player )

Do you have an application on your Treo you use all the time that isn't listed here? We encourage you to register an account and log in to the Wiki so you can add your own "must have" applications to this list. Thanks!
