Installing software on the Treo 600/650
Your Treo comes with several applications built-in and ready to use. You can also install a huge variety of third-party Palm OS applications, such as business software, games, and much more.
When you download an application to your computer, it is probably in a compressed format such as a .zip or .sit file. If the file is compressed, you need to use a decompression utility on your computer, before you install applications on your Treo.
These instructions tell you how to install basic .prc (Palm OS application) and .pdb (Palm OS database) files onto your Treo. Some Palm OS software uses an installer or wizard to guide you through the process. Consult the documentation that came with the software for details.
Installing applications directly from the Internet
You can install Palm OS applications directly from the Internet, using the Blazer web browser (also known as OTA - Over the Air- installation). When you download an application, it automatically installs on your Treo. Remember: Palm OS applications have .prc or .pdb at the end of their file names.
- Launch the Blazer web browser.
- Go to the page that contains the link to the application you want to download.
- Press Left or Right to highlight the link to the file, then press Center to initiate the download process.
Installing applications from a Windows computer
This assumes that the palm application (.prc or .pdb file) is already on your desktop PC and that you have already installed the Palm Desktop software.
- Double-click the .prc or .pdb file you want to install on your Treo.
- A dialog may appear with a User drop-down list. Select your User Name from the list.
- The Install Tool window appears. If you would like to install additional files, simply drag and drop them into the space in this window.
- If you want to install an application to an expansion card, click Change Destination. Click the arrows to move the application to the expansion card pane, then click OK.
- Click Done.
- Perform a HotSync operation to install the application(s) on your Treo.
Installing applications from a Macintosh computer
This assumes that the palm application (.prc or .pdb file) is already on your Mac and that you have already installed the Palm Desktop software.
- On your Macintosh, launch Palm Desktop.
- From the HotSync menu, choose Install Handheld Files.
- Select the User Name that corresponds to your Treo phone from the User drop-down menu.
- Click Add To List.
- Locate the .prc or .pdb file you want to install on your Treo. Highlight it and click Add File.
- Perform a HotSync operation to install the application(s) on your Treo.
Installing applications from SD Card
You may also install applications stored on your SD card. With the use of a File Manager like the popular FileZ, simply copy the files needed for installation to your Treo RAM, et voila!
Installing applications TO your SD Card
Certain applications that do not have to be run automatically or reside in the system can be installed and run from the SD Card, conserving the precious memory in RAM. Installation to the card is quite easy:
- Using HotSync, simply select "Card" as the destination for the file.
- Using any other method, simply use a File Manager to copy the files to the "Palm/Launcher/" directory of the SD card.
Installing applications over IR port
Slow and "painfull" process, but sometime needed. Beamed .prc files can be installed autumaticly after reception.
UN-Installing applications
HELP! - I deleted an application, but now my Treo won't work like it did before
Much like installing any application to any computerized device, in order to correctly delete it, you do not simply "delete" it - you must "uninstall" it by first disabling the application, thus clearing its preferences and then deleting it it from the device. Failing to do so can often result in your device not performing as it should. A very popular occurence of this problem is the improper deletion of an alternative launcher.
Properly deleting alternative launchers
Users often report that after having installed and deleted a launcher replacement, trying to revert to the built-in launcher and perform such tasks as cycling through the the categories by pressing the home/launcher key proves not to work. The reason again is that the alternate launcher was not deleted properly - it was not disabled prior to deletion.
To correct this problem, there are several options. By FAR, the easiest and most efficient is simply to reinstall the launcher that was deleted, disable it (there is most often a preference setting in the launcher that enables/disables it as the default launcher), and then delete it again.
Alternatively, you may install a file manager or robust euninstallation manager (several are in our Downloads Section) with preferencesDB editing capabilities, and locate the leftover preferences of the deleted launcher.
Again, the first option is by far easier, quicker, and more efficient.... although the BEST way is to of course simply delete it right the first time!
