Help using HotSync with the Treo 600/650

Synchronising data between PC and Treo.

What is HotSync?

The synchronization process, called "HotSync," is the transferring of information between a desktop computer and a Palm Powered handheld. The HotSync process works both ways - it backs up the data from your Treo to your PC, and it also installs Palm applications or transfers files to your Treo.

It is important to HotSync your Treo at least once per week and preferrably every day to ensure that your data is always backed up.

If you have never HotSync'd your Treo then do it now!

How do I perform a HotSync

To HotSync your Treo you must first install the Palm Desktop software on your desktop computer, see below for the link to download this. Once the software is installed, to perform a HotSync simply connect your Treo to the desktop PC via the USB Sync cable and press the large round button at the Treo end of the cable.

Where I can find and download the latest version of Palm Desktop?

You can download Palm Desktop from PalmOne's support page.

How do I find my HotSync ID?

Your HotSync ID is used to identify your device when synchronising. To find your HotSync ID simply open the application on your Treo named HotSync and your ID is displayed in the top right of the screen.

Differences between HotSync and a full system Backup

HotSync does not do a full backup of your Treo. It could happen that when restoring from a previous HotSync your registered software becomes unregistered. To do a complete backup you do need a different program which will save ALL your Treo information onto either the SD card or your PC. There are a few programs out there which do this such as BackupBuddyVFS, BackupBuddy, CardBackup NVBackup, and VFSBackup. BackupBuddyVFS, CardBackupand VFSBackup are all palm software which back up the Treo to the SD card; NVBAckup is specifically written for NVFS devices like the 650 and higher PalmOS models and also writes it's backup to the card; BackupBuddy is a desktop software which backs up the Treo and SD card to the desktop PC.

Which HotSync method is faster - over cable or over IR?

HotSync over cable is faster. IR port is good for beaming small files, or for receiving midi ringtones, because received tones will be automatically placed in ringtones database.

How can I sync with Lotus Notes or Outlook?

For sync with Lotus Notes you need some of these applications: mNotes, Pylon Pro, Lotus Easysync Pro... For sync with Outlook you need Chapura KeySuite or PocketMirror. Palm Desktop version 4.1 can sync with Lotus Organizer.
