Getting Started

This page explains how to get started editing and adding pages to this Wiki.

What is a Wiki?

Basically a Wiki is a web based document that can be edited by the visitor in their web browser. The changes are then available for everyone to see, and the next person can add their own changes if they like. The Treo knowledge base here at mytreo.net is a Wiki. A great example of a massive wiki is WikiPedia, an encyclopedia made entirely by user contributions, quite amazing!

Who can edit this Wiki?

Some Wikis have open access where anybody can edit and add pages, but as you can imagine this leaves them open to being abused by people and spam robots, so we have made this wiki editable only to mytreo.net members.

How do I gain access to edit this Wiki?

To gain access to edit the pages you must first be registered and logged in as a mytreo.net site member.

Once logged in, visit the UserSettings page and you will be asked for a pass code. Enter "letmeEdit" without the quotes and hit "Register" - your account will be immediately activated so that you may edit the Wiki.

Ok, I'm activated, now what?

If you've never used a wiki before then there are a few things you need to know otherwise you may get easily confused.

WikiNames - a WikiName, sometimes called a "camel case" word, is two or more capitalized words joined together with no spaces. In a Wiki, WikiNames are used as page names, and whenever you type a WikiName it automatically links to that page in the Wiki. When the link is clicked, if no page exists then the user is asked if they would like to create the page, and so the wiki grows!

This automatic linking can be a little annoying if you are using a lot of WikiNames (like in the above paragraph) so you can "escape" WikiWords by adding double-double quotes like this: ""WikiName"" which gives: WikiName with no hyperlink.

Editing a page, or creating a page

This is where the fun starts!

To edit a page just click "Edit page" at the bottom, or double click on the page with your mouse (check your UserSettings if this doesn't work).

To test out your editing skills please use the SandBox or create a new page with your own WikiName (your WikiName is displayed in the menu at the top - click on it and it will create the page if one doesn't exist!)

Read the FormattingRules for help with formatting your text and pages.

To create a page, just type the PageName into any existing page, save it, then click on the link and you will be prompted to create the page, if it doesn't exist already of course. (Alternatively you could just add the page name to the URL in your browser address bar.)

See CategoryWiki for more pages about Wikis and how to use them.
