What is Blazer?

Blazer is the web browser that comes pre-installed on the Treo 600. In the application launcher it is usually found in the Main category with the label "Web".

Can I install applications directly from the web?

Yes. If the application is a .prc file just type in the full URL and once downloaded Blazer will ask if you want to install it. If the application is in a .zip file, then you'll need something like Hand Zipper Lite installed before you can download or unzip the file. If you want to install something other than a .prc or .zip, than you need a media manager application such as Media Manager or ReceiveIt.

Can I view straight .txt or .jpg URLs in Blazer 3.0 (Web)?

No. Blazer will redirect a .jpg url to the photo manager that controls the camera, where it will look awful. It will dump .txt URLs to memopad, which is pretty inconvenient. No known workarounds except to use a different browser.

When I view certain websites, I see numbers next to the links. What are these for?

These numbers allow the links to be surfed by simply pressing the corresponding number on the keypad.

When I view certain websites, I see phone numbers. Can I dial them from Blazer?

Depending on your carrier, you may be able to click directly on these links to initiate a phone call. Remember, depending on your location and your mobile provider you may need to dial certain country or area code prefixes.

In Blazer, how can I quickly shift the focus to the control buttons at the bottom of the window?

By pressing the spacebar. This works even while the page is loading.

How can I clear all of my Blazer web browser cookies?

From Blazer:

  1. Click the Menu button
  2. Select Options, then Preferences
  3. In the Preferences window hit the Advanced button
  4. When the Advanced window appears, hit the Memory Management button
  5. In the Memory Management window hit the Clear button next to Cookies
  6. Click done

Note how you can also change the size of the Blazer cache in these options, this is very useful if your Treo is low on memory.

Can I navigate web pages I have visited forward and backward in Blazer by using the keyboard?

Yes. In Blazer, the backspace key will take you back and enter is forward.

How can I disconnect my data connection from Blazer?

  1. Click the Menu button
  2. Select Options
  3. Select Disconnect

I have correctly configured my connection settings, but Blazer can't open any web page

In rare cases, you may have to enter proxy address and port number. Problem is that carrier's support service often can't tell you what their proxy settings are. Try to find connection settings on the carrier's web page. If there is no specific proxy settings listed, you can try to enter carrier's IP address as proxy address and for port number you can enter commonly used port number in your country (eg. 8080).

  1. Click the Menu button
  2. Select Options, then Preferences
  3. In the Preferences window hit the Advanced button
  4. Select Set Proxy
  5. Mark Use Proxy
  6. Enter Proxy Server parameters and Port number

Can I reorganize my Bookmarks?

Yes. You can move favourites around so that your most used are on the first page you see and those irritating ones from your carrier which you can't edit are hidden away. (Actually you can delete them but that's another question.) When viewing your favourites open the menu and select Edit Favorites. On the screen which opens up you can use your stylus to move the entries around. You can move favourites to a different page entirely by dragging them down to the section showing the overview of all ten pages, or you can move them around within the page they're already on. You can also rename the pages so you can have different categories of favourites.

Sometimes Blazer doesn't load pages properly

Try using one of these browser enhancement sites:

Skweezer is good to use when Blazer doesn't quite cope with the page you want to visit. Browse to http://www.skweezer.net on your Treo and take a look.

WebXCope is a web reduction service tailored to mobile devices. The most important selling point of WebXCope is that it breaks web pages down into more manageable chunks. This is handy because quite often sites that aren't optimised for mobile devices have a lot of extra stuff all around the part you actually want to view.
Browse to http://www.webxcope.com on your Treo and take some time to adjust your preferences before going any further. To get access to this you have to register, but that's free. You can browse without adjusting your prefs but you won't be very impressed as the default is set for 'normal' mobile phones. Once you've gained access to the prefs boost the page content size to the maximum and decide whether you want pictures to appear or not, etc. These are stored as a cookie so you don't have to do this more than once - unless you delete your cookies. Then go back to the webxcope portal page ("logout and continue") and enter the web address you want in the dialogue box provided.
