This news from Phonescoop.com.

“Verizon is set to announce a change in policy that will allow owners of EV-DO handsets [such as Treo 700w smartphones] to use them as modems for laptops. Using a USB cable, not Bluetooth, owners of most current EV-DO handset will be able to tether their phones to a laptop and use the Broadband Access data network. Verizon already offers this option to users of the Blackberry 7130e. As with the 7130e, users will have to upgrade their data plan to a $60 per month version. The LG VX9800 and VX8100 as well as the Motorola e815 and V3c are all compatible with the new option. The XV6700 and Treo 700W smartphones are not supported at launch.”

  1. Change that to: ‘Verizon is set to announce a change in policy that will allow owners of EV-DO handsets [such as Treo 700w smartphones] to [legally/officially] use them as modems for laptops.” heehee

  2. Change that to “Verizon is now charging another $30/month on top of an already very expensive monthly plan to use a feature that was originally already built into the phone. Verizon crippled this feature, and is now charging extra to turn it back on. They are also reportedly working on a “fix” to disable the use of third party software such as PDAnet that already make the use of the 700w as a modem possible.”

  3. can the treo 600 legally be used as a modem via USB if one has the data plan already and uses PDA net?
