At CTIA this week, we caught up with the Head of Marketing in North America for HTC. The Taiwanese wireless conglomerate opened an office in the United States two years ago that already employs close to three hundred people. HTC unveiled several innovative Windows Mobile devices, and is making a major commitment to the US market.

In addition to producing its own handsets, HTC also manufacturers for a number of other original equipment manufacturers. For example, HTC manufactures several Windows Mobile Treo devices for Palm.

So far we do not believe the company has produced a Treo killer. Palm’s software improvements to the Windows Mobile and Palm operating systems keep the Treo in the lead. Usability is in our view the most important specification. However, HTC’s new form factors are eye-catching and phone features impressive. Some HTC devices have hundreds of megabytes of memory and built-in Wifi.

In this exclusive video interview we recorded for mytreo.net and msmobiles.com, learn the details of all of HTC’s new offerings.

  1. has not produced a treo-killer???
o boy — if they where to provide a smartphone w/ palm-os (or, even better, alp) my treo 650 would be dead and gone the very day!
compare the tytn with the treo:

    - it does not force the user to use a stupid keyboard but allows writing on screen.

    - it does not cripple the screen in favour of a rather useless keyboard

    - it does not force you to install some 3d-party sw just to use the best of all palm-features: graffiti

    - it offers sdio — not like palm being unable or unwilling to do that little programming for the palm-os treos

if i didn’t have a loathing of microsoft i never had bought a treo — seeing palm abandoning their own os in favour of wince is disgusting and says “forget palm” with a big F.
why should one buy a treo w/ wince while there are wince-smartphones much better than that crippled palm-thingy?
i certainly hope htc brings a tytn with alp — and then: bye, palm.

  2. WINCE machines are trying to be very tiny laptop computers, but they fail miserably. Screens and keyboards are too small for that. Palm devices should not attempt the same thing.

Bottom line: most applications and web pages are designed (and should be) for 1024×768 desktop/laptop screens. PDAs and smartrphones are not supposed to replace laptops. Just because they nominally can present PowerPoint slides, etc. does not mean they are equivalent to laptops.

PDAs/smartphones are best as intended: simple devices to remind/prompt/help users do a handful of simple but crucial tasks (time/task management, verbal communication, short text messages, etc.) for which small displays and small keyboards are acceptable trade-offs. PalmOS has been the best for that (though not perfect).

If you must do research for and type a dissertation, then use a laptop with full-size display and keyboard at the library or at $tarbucks.

  3. Let’s face it. Palm OS has a huge loyal following but many late adopters and the non-technically inclined are afraid to learn a new device or OS and gravitate toward the seemingly more familiar Windows devices. I know many folks who, after working with both platforms, began to realize how much easier it was to use Palm over WinMo. The vast array of third-party-apps are icing on the cake. This scenario has resulted in several converts. Having said that, it was Palm’s intention to bring some Treo-specific traits to the WinMo platform and make it more one-handed rather than dependent on a stylus. Much like lipstick on a pig, they succeeded. I agree with the assessment of the Treo running WinMo, but there are still many users who find it the winning combination of size and function.

  5. I got into Treo’s with a Treo 600 about 2 years ago. It was the best thing since sliced bread back then, not too big, sd slot, great keyboard, nice touch-screen, lots and lots of palm apps. I soon upgraded to a Treo 650, and was wow-ed by the really great 320×320 screen, bluetooth (and gps/sat nav), great battery life, stereo mp3 playback, and the other stuff (keyboard, sd slot) which I loved from the 600.

Things have kept moving in the smartphone market, and though I despise Microsoft, HTC have been releasing stuff which kicks Treo butt. This butt-kicking started with the HTC Wizard, which I’ve owned over the past year, and continued with the HTC Prophet which I’ve owned for the last 6 months.

Things I like about the HTC Prophet, compared with the Treo 650 (or 680,700) - SDHC slot (takes 4Gb SD vs 2Gb), 2Mp camera (vs vga camera), **Wifi**/BT/IR (vs BT/IR), more stylish, Cutting and Pasting stuff, Pocket Word/Excel, Active Sync to Outlook Address Book, prefer apps to Palm ones (particular File Explorer vs FileZ), Mp3 ringtones (need separate app to do this on Palm), run more than 1 app at once (better than Palm does it), etc.

Treos have hardly improved since the 650. The one thing that the Treo does better than the Prophet is the 320×320 nice bright screen, although the Prophet 320×240 screen is not bad.

HTC Tytn and future releases are managing to get further away from Palm capabilities - 3G/fast data, GPS built in, probably have a usb host port before you know it.

This reminds me of the Sendo X smartphone - it was great when it was released - but then got overtaken and left for dust, within the next 6 months.

  6. I returned my HTC 8525 in favor of a Palm 750. While the 8525 is slightly more powerful, it can’t be used with one hand. HTC is giving Palm a run for their money though. It’s the choice of ultra hi-tech geeks everywhere…almost.

  7. i have still not received payment on my treo tradeup program from December..Any comments or class action programs..

  10. well, i use palms since palm IIIx — and the best part of it was not using a keyboard but a stylus to write (and do everything else).
i am writing much faster w/ graffiti 1 then w/ that mouse-piano palm likes to call a keyboard.
single-hand-use is no really advantage if it takes you twice the time — and the tytn allows for both, where palm even fails to make the shortcuts of it’s programs consistent (sometimes i get the soft-keyboard by /k, sometimes by /t and sometimes neither nor).
and that keyboard even fails to make input of umlauts easy!
what purpose does it serve to make using a stylus hard — when making _everything_ w/ a stylus was originally a killing feature?

  11. HELLO!!!!! hasnt made a treo killer yet.

You cant be serious when you say that.

show me a treo with wifi that’s built in and or doesnt require me to buy additional items and give up my sd card slot while using it.

How about GPS without an external antenna.

How about a keyboard big enough to actually type on.

    GET OFF THE DRUGS!!!!

here’s one for you look up the HTC Shift.
