Treo 700p Supply Constrained?

According to Digital Times Telecom, Inventec Appliances, a manufacturer contracted by Palm to assemble the Treo 700p, may not be able to start volume production of the device until September due to software problems. The original schedule was for volume production to start at the beginning of the second quarter.

Inventec’s strategy of simultaneously developing smartphones based on operating systems from PalmSource, Microsoft and Linux, has spread thin the company’s resources and jeopardized its product roadmap, including the development of its own-brand smartphones, sources indicated.

However, High Tech Computer (HTC), rather than Inventec, is currently the major contract maker of PDA phones for Palm. HTC began volume shipments of the Treo 700w in the first quarter of this year and is expected to roll out a new Treo handset that supports the WCDMD standard in the second half.

Delays are not new for Treo smartphones. The Treo 600, which was the first Treo to have the current form factor and feature set, was so popular and simultaneously supply constrained when it was released four years ago that consumers faced six month waiting lists to buy the device from mobile phone service providers. When Handspring, the manufacturer of the Treo 600, was purchased by the larger and more resourceful Palm, supply constraint issues and waiting lists went away. Until now?

  1. I’ve been a longtime and loyal Palm user. I avoided buying a cell phone until the Treo 270 came out because I wouldn’t use a cell phone that didn’t have my pda’s useablity. But, I have to say that I have no sympathy for Palm right now. Who ever told the Palm “powers that be” to split off the software division should be smacked in the head. And “powers that be” at Palm who went through with the plan need to kicked in the butt before they’re handed their last paycheck.

Yes the Palm hardware is good but the Palm OS (as outdated as it is) is what has kept Palm users on the hook and keep us beliving and spending money with Palm. Now that Palm doesn’t own it’s primary OS and has jumped into bed with it’s former competitor I can only imagine that the next “major” Palm offerings will focus on the how well Palm does Windows. That is unless they pull a rabbit out of their butt or light a fire under Palmsource to get ALP (or even POS 6) on the latest greatest Palm hardware. This is just my 2ยข. What to others think?

  2. On the other hand, there seems to be inventory available. From Palm’s site:

Sprint Treo 700p=In stock, shipping normally
Verizon Wireless Treo 700p=In stock, shipping normally

Oh, no! Get one while they last…

  3. This whole thing is sad. I want my OS. I don’t want Windows, but if I eventually HAVE to go Windows? It won’t be on a Palm device out of sheer spite.

  4. The 700p production had to be stoped.garnet and EVDO have major issues working together.THis device is a class action waiting to happen.I also came from WM to this device and would hate to lose it but unless garnet can get the holes fixed fast were out of luck.

  5. I dont live in the US… does that mean that I cant buy my new treo now?? I havent changed my phone for the past 2 years (ok, 1 and a half!) just waiting for the 700p (i dont two hoots for the w…) and now I cant buy it cause there isnt a sim unlocked version to buy! how stupid is that… Palm may be losing (at least) one (more) die-hard palm customer…
