Want more evidence the Treo 680 release is impending? On Friday, one day after the FCC green-lighted the Treo 750v, they also blessed the Treo 680!

Why are we excited? Because this new product, which was internally code-named “Low Rider” by Palm, promises substantial enhancements, including:

  • New slim and light form factor;

  • No external antenna;
  • New phone interface that has the ability to respond to calls with a preset text message, and adds new ways to add phone numbers to existing contacts and initiate three-way calling;
  • 64MB of user-available storage (three times the memory of the Treo 650!);
  • Exchange ActiveSync now synchronizes not only calendar and email, but also contacts as well;
  • Blazer 4.5 has smarter caching rules and includes alternate modes for viewing web pages optimized for the device or as a regular web page;
  • Improved multimedia capabilities for streaming music, playing MP3s and managing and sharing photo albums;
  • Built-in dial-up networking (DUN) capabilities;
  • Newest Version of Documents To Go: As always, view, edit and share Microsoft Word and Excel documents…in addition view full-featured Adobe PDF files and Microsoft PowerPoint presentations;
  • Bluetooth 1.2 (up from 1.1 in the Treo 650) with improved car-kit and headset support, and support for multiple simultaneous Bluetooth connections.

The Treo 680 is a low priced device that is expected to sell initially for $199. However, we expect it quickly to be given away for free to customers who sign 2-year voice and data contracts with their mobile service provider. Cingular is expected to have both the Treo 680 and Treo 750v first prior to December holidays.

  1. Its not better than the Treo 700p. Who cares about looks right. (”looks in shame at his own treo and wishes its antenna was internal.”)

  2. yeah, um this is great. but aren’t most diehards who might follow a site like this, really holding out for the 750 since it’s close behind? I know I am.

  3. looks kinda wierd
    just get treo 700p I have that phone it rocks

  4. So what are the functional differences between this one and 700wx (or palm for that matter).

  5. Very keen to ugrade from my treo 650 to the 680 - any idea when it’ll be launched in the US and how much it’ll be off the shelf. It wont be in the UK until before Christmas and I fear it’ll be in pounds sterling here what it’ll be in dollars in the US.

  6. Well for pure GSM customers (India..and probably Europe as well)..the only option coming ahead is 680.

    700wx/700p both arent on GSM **yet**.
