The ultimate proof of the upcoming Treo 700w
Palm, Microsoft and Verizon Wireless have announced a press conference
on Monday, September 26th. Although the announcement doesn’t include any
details about the topic of the conference, it isn’t hard to tell that this
will be the official announcement of the Treo 700w aka the Windows
Treo.
One does not get the three Chief Executive Officers of these companies
to join each other on stage for a press conference only to announce a new
version of ActiveSync…that’s right, Ed Colligan, Bill Gates and Denny
Strigl are planning for something big this Monday!
UPDATE:
The press conference will be accessible via live webcast at links below beginning at 9 a.m. Pacific Time. A replay, podcast and written transcript of the press conference also will be available starting at approximately 12 p.m. and listed in Monday’s news release.

Next Monday Palm will hold a press conference where cooperation between Palm and Microsoft will be officially announced. Journalists are welcome to visit this press conference in person while the rest can view it through webcast.
This is single the most important event in the history of Windows Mobile phones! … and means practically that Windows Mobile gains strong ally in form of Palm Corporation, that has no intention to use Symbian in their smartphones however…
Please note: contrary to what some deluded webmasters, like Peter Rojas, who revealed photos of Treo 700w think, this press conference is due to CTIA 2005 conference that takes place next week and not due to the fact that they published unofficial photos of this phone!

YAY!
Does this mean we have to TRASH ALL of our Palm based software on our current Treo’s in order to run this new Treo???
Wow, I can’t wait to get hold of these new Treos! I have to say, I’m excited to see a Windows Mobile version. The Treo is the best mobile device ever made, and I’m interested to see how it will work with the new software.
Hey if MS wants to sell me an OS that will work on my Palm Tungsten C I would be happy to buy it. As if!
the only reason I put up with the treo’s tantrums is because it runs my palm software. If I can only use windows based stuff it will be no use. if I want a windows based pda there are loads out there.
I am sure I am not the only one putting up with the treo just because it is palm based?
I can’t believe some of you guys actually think this is good news. This is very bad news for the Palm OS. This is an experiment. They are testing the market — to see if Windows will make them more money. If it does, then expect the Palm OS to whither away.
I am not very happy right now.
Oh great! Now we can have the worst of both worlds! The worst operating system on the worst hardware! Surely the PalmOS was the Treo’s one redeeming feature!
they better do something they’re falling way behind
As a Mac user , I am very annoyed by this. Is Treo abandoning me?
What sort of message is Palm sending to it’s loyal PalmOS user base? “Oh yes, wi-fi is a great option, let’s implement it with a mobile Windows version!” Bad move on Palms part and shame on you!. You’ve clearly crossed over to the dark side and joined forces with the evil Emperor.
I mean Palm wrote the book on mobile OS, why in the world would they compromise by joining with MS? Are they that afraid of Symbian???
I’ll keep my Treo 650, running my PalmOS. If I wanted a stinking Windows device attached to my hip, I would have purchased a Pocket PC.
I agree that it looks like it is the end of all of those beaut free Palm applications and a move into bloated software. Internal memory will have to inclrease by 10-fold!
WOW!!! I thought this was never going to come out.
it’s a great betrayal … thank U jerks
Will the Treo 700w loose all the data after a day of use like PocketPc when they don’t have enough energy ?
If it is so, my present Treo 600 is the last Treo I’ve bought.
Who’s the marketing retard who thought up this one? Just what the world needs, another PPC, oh boy.
Great, now hackers can get into your phone as well as your PC. Welcome to Planet Windows where microsoft controls all your personal information, and allows access to it by anyone through inadequate protection written right into the microsoft code. Palm was really refreshing because it allowed an alternative to the Microsoft Police controls and restrictions. And I see that Palm has fallen (obviously because of money) to yet another Microsoft conquest. Everytime a better technology is found, microsoft gets involved with it and changes it to the microsoft way of life. Are there not laws to protect the consumer from these intrusions?? What about the monopoly that microsoft has? Do they not control enough? Now palm, what next?
It was very bad idea. Windows mobile will kill palm.
My 650 gives me so much pleasure !!!
And now, I expect, the new 700w (blurgh…) is going to give so much pain to people who actually going to BUY this freakin’ thing….
And don’t give me that cr$p about a Palm user is going to like this, the people on this page saying that this is a good thing actually don’t exist.
And if they do, they’re being paid to type that stuff.
Well, my 650 is my first and last Treo I will use. I’m just gonna have to wait ’till Apple comes up with a phone…
Wait a minute !!! - THEY DID !!!!!!!!!
;-)
Dumb idea - i’ve had pocket pc’s and they always fail - loose data, memory hogs and the like. The Palm OS is much more stable.
Dumb!
Oh great! Now we can have the worst of 3 worlds! The worst operating system on the worst hardware! with the worest network cell phone provider
GOOD GOD THIS IS GOING TO BE HELL!!
Forget about Treo then, stop buying 650 if u r still owing a 600 (that’s me). Have been trying to get 650, but now need no justification to drop Treo. Since they have decided to drop US first. Since the new release is Windows based, we might all get any other PPC then Palm manufactured! Just to let them know that’s Consumer power. Just my 2 cents worth!
great! just greatly BAD!
i acquired TREO becuase it’s PALM based OS. you mean i’ll buy this upgrade to ditch my PALM apps? no way. they must release TREO 700p to watch which one will have a higher sale, but i bet mr wingates won’t allow that (heh). is there also a news that mr winGates has bought PALM (to hammer a competitor?)?
This is pure unadulterated marketing. Microsoft wants to continue to manipulate the software market by consuming and taking over PALM. Microsoft is such a monopolizing monster.
No more free palm based software- everything is going to cost you. It took twenty years for microsoft to listen to their consumers (servants, slaves, subjects whatever) it will take forever to do the same with this bloated horrible new idea.
NOT FOR ME!
It was Palm and Blackberry that should have teamed up. The smaller innovative companies. I know Palm is loosing market share but this is a sell out that will wipe out Palm.
sorry - couldn’t bear to read through all the sobbing to find out definitively whether or not there will be a palm-based 700 as well as the “w,” though i do get the horror of palm os going away.
anyone know anything?
I’m hanging on to my 650. The 700w can rot, for all I care. Just a gateway for viruses, bugs, and hackers like every other Microsoft product.
So, what about McDonald’s, Microsoft? You don’t own them yet? Don’t you want to take something successful that you didn’t create & buy it out? You know, like you usually do? We’ll be buying “Big Bill’s” instead of “Big Mac’s” before you know it.
Someone hack a 700w and run Linux on it…
There sure a lot of cry babies out there. I have never used a Palm, though I have liked there designs, because of the lack of Windows software. I work in the medical field and trying to get programs to run on PAlm and intergrate with my PC at home would have been a major problem. Now I, a Windows user can buy a Palm for its better over all design. I suspect this is the market they were going after, and further suspect it is a much larger market then the few remaining Palm OS people out there. Everything runs on Microsoft and this will make for a much more appealing product. With Palm enhancing the MS Mobile 5.0 it should be a great OS. To all you lame Palm OS cry babies get a life and learn some actual business, because you all sound very clueless.
as far as i know, there are many more programs for palm os as far as health care software is concerned. in fact, most medical schools require palm os based pda by a students 3rd year. and they tell you that if you have a ppc, that you’ll have to ditch it and get a palm. this being compatibility issues with software.
I finally got smart about a month ago and picked up a treo650 after I ran my brand new motorola through the wash. I had to pay full price because I had just recently “upgraded”. I was a bundle of cash for me but I thank myself every day for being a bumbling idiot and washing my phone. I love my treo and think that it was worth every cent that I had to spent. I have used the palm os eversince my first purchase of the palm III and have since purchased a number of palm devices my last being a sony clie. I made one trip to the “dark side” as an experiment with wifi and purchased a pocket pc. There is absolutely no comparison with the palm os. Palm is much more usable as a mobile device, the ppc stumbled from one app to the next compared to the nimble palm. I must say that I am very sorry to see palm falling by the wayside to the lumbering software giant of microsoft. I guess that I will be forced to learn how to develop my own apps for the palm so that i can continue to use it into the future. I’m only sorry that I didn’t purchase my treo earlier so that I would have more time to spend using a wonderfuly intuitive piece of hardware and software. Shame on you palm ceo, for giving in to the masses and allowing microsoft to taint such a refreshinly open platform and buisness concept! And Bill…you can take your ppc platform and…well…you know!
I have to say I am a little suprised at all the outrage here. I guess it is safe to say the a PALM user is a dedicated one. Being the sole support of 221 Blackberry devices, 92 Treo 650’s, and 15+ Pocket PC’s I have to say this is a welcome change for me. I can’t find any decent FREE PALM software that does anything I want it to, the updates take a lifetime for firmware and in a PC based company they are good for little more than Good Link Email. The new option to run WM5 in house and on the device now drops a vendor for me! An expensive vendor too. This is a good thing, in my eyes. Maybe I am on a different fence than everyone else, but I am excited about this release as are close to 100 people within the company I work.
Yaaa!!!.. I’ve ever loved windows mobile, since i were buying ipaq, i have my treo 600 CDMA, now i’ll maybie sell my ipaq and buy a new treo for next year… i know this is one of the best ideas palm ever had
I could use more pictures of the new treo 700
and i cant wait to get my fingers on it
smh. someone please remind “BILL” that he left his pitch fork and horns back @ the house.
Will wifi 802.11G be available on the treo 700w if it does I want it ASAP ok .
will the new palm Treo 700w allow old palm files to be restored. What about all of your old Palm software and the palm desktop?
I read thru the pros and cons of the Treo 650 (Palm OS) and Treo 700 (Windows). Is it safe to say that all Treo 650 are non Windows users? And that all Treo 700 are Windows users?
I tried the Treo 650 out the other day, and it was my first time looking at Palm’s OS. Yes, it is simple, I added a schedule and view my events. Now, I am looking into the Treo 700 and thinking about buying one. I’ll give it a try and I think that all non Treo 700 should give it a try too and based your opinion on that and not just imagine what it could and couldn’t do.
I’ll based my buy on these options:
Easily Import/Export data to my Treo from my PC (Windows).
Ease Of Navigations.
Updates of softwares.
