The new Palm Treo Pro - finally, a Palm device to get excited about?

Finally, do we have a Palm device to get excited about?

Well, the pictures and specifications suggest that at least we have a new Palm device that can truly compete in the modern smartphone market. This isn’t going to satisfy the Palm purists who still eagerly await a new Palm OS powered device but with a slick new look and tons of goodies (including Wi-Fi, GPS, HSDPA, high resolution 320×320 screen, 2MP camera, WM 6.1 and microSDHC) the new Palm Treo Pro certainly appears to be the best device we’ve seen from Palm since the Handspring Treo 600. Have Palm finally got their finger out? We sure hope so!

Read on for detailed specs and photo gallery.

The Treo Pro is Palm’s first GSM smartphone to support tri-band 3G over HSDPA giving markedly faster Internet speeds on GSM networks in North America, Europe and Asia. It also marks the first significant redesign of the GSM Treo since the Handmark Treo 600 and sports a new, sleeker design that includes a flush touchscreen and a button to quickly switch off or on the built-in Wi-Fi radio.

The Treo Pro also brings true built-in GPS for navigation through Google Maps or TomTom and continues the trend set by the Treo 800w which saw the switch from proprietary Palm connections to the more standard micro USB and a native 3.5mm headphone jack. As with the Treo 800w the Treo Pro is based on Windows Mobile 6.1.

  1. …no way! This is the best treo news I have heard in a long time. Now they need to release it with Palm OS for AT&T and i’m in. Or maybe I’ll make “the switch” for this if I have to. :)

  2. WOW!! I can not be the only one that had to look at this 3 times to believe it. It looks great!

But I was really hoping to hear and see something with a Palm OS in it. But if they can come up with everything this has with the Palm OS. I will buy it.
But I am a fan of normal SD cards, I wish they would go back to them.

  3. Second though, If this phone comes out on Sprint I just might have to make the switch to Windows Mobi. Not so sure I am happy about that.

  4. OMG! This could be the solution to the Iphone?! What is the latest news on the release date? What is the cost? When is the release of the Palm OS? I know there are users who have the answer, please share your wisdom.

  5. Sigh. Nice hardware, but Windows Mobile really sucks…

  6. makes me want to take my centro back and get this phone….its really nice…but a new palm os would have been better

  7. Truthfully, the biggest news about this new palm device for me is the fact that it sports a 3.5 mm audio jack! Too many issues in the past for me with the 2.5 mm jacks on the 650 and my Centro. Hmmmm, I’ve really vested a lot into Palm-based apps, but this could be the one that makes me make the switch (down the road of course…)

Would be nice if they just made a dual-boot phone to make us all happy.

  8. Maybe we can just run StyleTap on it…

  9. I will try to hold out until they release it with the Palm OS… I WILL TRY!!!

  10. no PalmOS no go, looks great though and maybe Palm can push the profits into a new shiny palmOs device

  11. The suggested retail price is $549.

  12. color looks good but keyboard seems to be small. both 800W and Pro are WM6 when are they coming out with PALM OS?

  13. I will keep my 700p for awhile with all its flaws for now. Not interested in any “Palm version” of Win Mobile. This is hardly an apology. Palm inc. has really a lot to make up for. Glad to see Palm brought in the Mini USB back, instead of the proprietary connector. Somebody must be kicking butt at Palm.

  14. WOW! I just got a 755P and I wonder what network this will be..hmm..seems like to look pretty sleek. Can’t wait to get hands on

  15. PALM OS, PALM OS, PALM OS. Don’t they f**king get it. Listen to the focus group, your customers. PALM OS, PALM OS, PALM OS. We don’t want windows, we want PALM OS, PALM OS, PALM OS. As much as I hate to, looking at Blackberry Bold when it hits Verizon. The waiting is the hardest part, said Tom Petty. WTF, PALM OS, PALM OS, PALM OS.

  16. Anyone want to take bets whether the Bluetooth works on it?

  17. ezriter93: Reallyi? You’d trade GPS and WiFi back in just to get a full size SDHC card? MIcro SDHC cards are here to stay. 32 gb is PLENTY.

Geochm: The Treo Pro (as well as the 800w) uses MIcroUSB, not Mini USB. MicroUSB is replacing MIni USB as the standard.

  18. Has Palm finally bypassed the carriers? I have read NOTHING about the targeted carrier. Has Palm finally bypassed the them?

The only thing we know is GSM, which excludes Sprint (who just got the 800w) and Verizon. Verizon was always the last to get everything, so I don’t think this will ever show up in a CDMA version.

  19. I am with ilabelu PALM OS, however this looks real good. Been a Palm user for many years and can’t wait for a updated Treo, for GSM networks.

  20. Clarification: The Carrier’s for Europe are Vodophone and O2 and Telstra in Australia.

But that US GSM customers can just go and get it themselves is GREAT. Power users have been wanting to do that for a long time now.

This strategy could work better with the Garnet OS, dated as it is. However, it would work famously if it was shipped with the Garnet OS, but was future-upgradable to the Palm Nova OS, when it’s ready.

  21. I hope it comes out w/ Palm OS & long battery life.

  22. Oh PLeaazeeeee, GIve us the PALM Version !!!!

  23. I know it will be on at least AT&T, as I have been hounding my representative for months and she finally said it was in beta testing about a month ago!

Cannot wait to upgrade my 750

  24. man, can’t wait for a palm OS version. *doesn’t hold breath*

  25. TYPICAL !
Just got my Centro yesterday !

    What a stunner !

    Windows break !

Palm OS PLEASE and hurry up !
Please show these people how to make a phone Palm !

  26. NICE. Love the jack modification. Swap Palm OS for Windows and add more screen. Then I’d get one - even switch carriers.

  27. I agree with Col. Kernel. That would the be most reasonable thing to do. Ship the thing with all the GarnetOS incompatible features dormant. Allow us to upgrade to the NovaOS when it is relased and that way they have a stop gap measure. I love my 680, but it has been getting a little buggy lately. I hate/detest/despise WM6 (well anything WinOS related). I’d be willing to buy the new phone knowing I could upgrade it to full functionality with in a few months, but only a few months. No more than four. Hell, maybe they could do a rebate for early adopters since we were willing to buy a phone that is more brick than phone initially.

  28. Does anyone know when it’s going to be released?

  29. I noticed the article about the phone stated there was a hardware wi-fi switch on top of the phone. The switch I saw was a ringer on/off switch (identical to the one on my Centro) and the button looked like a power button…which I suppose could mean wi-fi radio power, but I seriously doubt it. I’m assuming they simply removed power button functionality from the red disconnect button and moved it to the top of the phone a la BlackJack.

  30. Oh, one more thing…I know photographs can be deceiving, but that phone looks to be roughly the same size as a Centro (maybe a little slimmer). I wonder if Palm is planning that as the replacement for the Centro, or if all future Treos will be of the smaller form factor. Just a thought…but again, pictures can be deceiving.

  31. Never mind…the earbuds look small next to the device. If a mod could delete this and my previous comment, it would be appreciated. If not, I retract my previous comment. :D

  32. Palm says fourth quarter of 08.

I only wish for palm/CDMA on VZW.

but I LOVE the color. and it looks great.
Wifi, GPS, more RAM and ROM, and 3.5mm connector + miniUSB port. WOW! I’d almost switch. almost!

  33. For nearly $600 bucks (some people pay taxes) Palm should at least have a clue to license StyleTap and dump it into the ROM of all their WinceMob devices.

With all the stupid and useless software they DO include in the ROM, it would seem that including an emulator that runs the software that 80% of people bought Palms FOR might make sense. Palm has probably fired anyone capable of knowing how to write any decent code, so licensing Styletap would make a lot of sense for some people who don’t need syncing and network availability for their “must have” apps. Paying a $50 license fee to run “Froggy” is ridiculous.

At least this device gives the Palm sales staff something to play with while they plod along with Nova for a few more years…

  34. Please, Please Sprint hear me now, pick this up so I can upgrade from my 700p

  35. All of you are getting hype…This phone isn’t being released in the US! if you have sprint or Verizon your out of Luck. You can buy it unlocked though starting in September.

  36. phonejack… that’s a contradiction: “this phone isn’t being released in the US [...] you can buy it unlocked [...] in September”.

It is being released in the US…. it is being released as an unlocked GSM phone.

  37. YES, Mon dieu. What in blazes is wrong with them. Listen to your loyal fans. Here’s another vote for Palm OS, for the love of Zohan. I’ve been waiting for years and giving sidelong glances to the HTCs with the VGA screens, WiFi, mini USB connectors and freakin’ GPS godammit for a loong time now. PALM OS PALM OS PALM OS

  38. Bigger screen please!!!!!

  39. I own the 755p and would like to upgrade. Move away from the centro look (wrong direction). Keep the bigger screen and big keyboard. Just go thinner and a silver exterior would be good. Palm OS/GPS/Wifi/

  40. Will Palm launch it with PALM OS (not WM)?

  41. Palm OS, Palm OS, Palm OS!!!! Too many apps… Wifi, GPS, 32GB micro sd card, great, but please more RAM!!!

  42. I’d be all over it if it had PALM OS. WM just doesnt cut it.

  43. Will this be avalable for sprint

  44. Maybe I can provide a different perspective: I am a user of both Palm OS Garnet (Centro, Sprint SERO Plan) and a longtime Windows PocketPC (2002, 2003)/ Mobile 5 user. I can say that in college I had an amazing Toshiba PPC with a huge screen and very thin that worked amazingly as a non net connected PDA. I actually returned a Sony running Palm OS to Circuit city to trade up to the WinMob with full handwriting recog. however, years later things have drastically changed. I moved to Verizon to get ahold of the HTC x6400 (WM5) with full slide out qwerty, touch screen, handwriting, 4gb microSD and wifi. life looked much improved! but then I tried to USE my new phone, resulting in nothing but dissapointment. WM has not been improved under the hood since at least 2003, for the move from PDA to cell phone MS just added some new drivers and hardware and a phone app. costing maybe an hours worth of a coders time. even with many times more memory and CPU the performance was unacceptable as a cell phone. the task swith and slow response would make it impossible to answer a call even when I had the phone in my hand mashing accept. after wasting a year and 2 xv6400s I went to sprint to pick up the SERO unlimited data plan for $30. I picked the cheapest smartphone available, and to my suprise I have been blown away for 2 months straight. every app. just WORKS, every time. I can dial anyone with only a couple keystrokes one handed. I never need to worry about memory management and shutting down background processes. Bottom line I love the sexy small Centro which is perfectly pocketable and useable without needing a huge belt clip case, and the useability is at least on par with the best in market. media wise I already get youtube, mp4, and streaming audio/video radio and tv - what more is there, really?? oh and get SERO and sprints blazing fast power vision network will blow you away. you will forget you ever wanted the power guzzzling short range 802.11bg wifi tech.

go out there and save your money. buycentro

  45. I have to say, that Palm is finally starting to get into the modern pda/smartphone market and out of the ’90s market. But I will agree with the other 90% of users who have tried palm OS and WinMob, the PalmOS platform outperforms in every category. Although I think that attracting new pda users requires offering WinMob, most of them will also eventually want the Palm platform as well. The phone looks great, good work guys, just hope your already working on the PalmOS for this one too!

  46. Palm OS!!!, bigger screen, longer batter life, more RAM, same keypad as 755p, thinner, available on Sprint….oh and right away…yes, that completes my order.

  47. The new Treo Pro is really a WOW device on the outside. I don’t really fancy the look as much as the Palm OS itself. Come on Palm, we need the Ori Palm OS, not WM6.1!! I have been using Treo 650 since 2006 until Palm releases the new OS — Nova, .

  48. of course the treo pro is goin 2 be released on sprint check phonescoop.com its says its releasin a WCDMA version. when have you ever seen a brand spanking new treo and sprint not be the first 2 sell it??? unfortunately no new palm OS not quite sure why.. I don’t want to let my text msg chat feature go. unless they hav it 4 windows I seen threaded option 4 txt msgs so maybe they are tryin 2 get as close 2 the palm OS as they can. but faithful palm OS users do not stray away from the norm. I can’t understand how u can keep upgradin windows but not palm OS? what’s so complicated about it???

  49. I really hope that’s a flash to the left of the camera otherwise there is no way i’m upgrading. What’s the point in getting excited about a phone with features that other phones already have? Shouldn’t we be getting excited about something NEW?

  50. I’m Vietnamese! I need a new Palm device with new PalmOS and support unicode!
