Sprint Treo 700wx Shipping Tuesday
Sprint is going to begin shipping the Treo 700wx on Tuesday, September 5th. With all the recent rumors (and now facts) about the upcoming Treos, we have to wonder what this means for all of us Treo users, aside from drooling and wallet emptying. Sprint describes the new Treo 700wx as a “new powerful PDA phone.”
EVDO - Forget dial-up speeds. If you’re in a Power Vision area, which is most major metropolitan areas, you can expect connection speeds up to 400-700Kbps. What does that mean? Your web and data will be coming at you fast: real fast. One of the great things about the Treo 700wx being offered by Sprint, is that Sprint’s data plan is far cheaper than Verizon; somewhere in the neighborhood of $60 cheaper if memory serves.
WM5 - For those of you who have never used the new Windows Mobile 5, let me tell you, Microsoft came through this time. It is far more stable than either release of Windows Mobile 2003, and definitely more user friendly and intuitive. With WM5, Outlook on your desktop goes with you everywhere: yes, even to the bathroom. Email attachments? They’re coming too. With native support for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and a PDF viewer the Treo 700wx is your complete mobile office. So leave the laptop behind - go ahead, your shoulder will thank you. With the built in mobile Windows Media Player, you can listen to your music, watch movies, even stream live radio and TV over the Internet.
PAM (Phone As Modem) - With EVDO speeds, Sprint is offering customers to be able to “tether” their 700wx to either their laptop or another PDA by either USB or Bluetooth.
1.3 MPix - Take pictures instead of notes. Email friends your funny faces or inundate them with cute pictures of your kids - I know I do. Take videos, customize your caller ID with pictures, make your smartphone all about you.
Voice Recorder - When pictures won’t do, record a voice memo. While we’re talking about voice, the Treo 700wx also features voice-activated dialing and a built in speakerphone.
Last but not least, the Treo 700wx sports the signature backlit QWERTY keyboard to enable faster text messages and email responses. Why, some dedicated road warriors have been know to write entire articles using only their Treo.

This is all good and well, but how exactly does it differ from the 700w? As far as I can tell, the specs are the same. I’ve heard that the 700wx is supposed to have more memory than the 700w, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.
Well, whatever. I like my 700p. I don’t know about you, but I figure I need less Microsoft in my life, not more.
I hope there’s a 700px, but only if it’s somehow better than the 700p.
Thanks for the info on the new 700wx.
I went to the Sprint site to cost out a new 700wx. Unlimited data is the same $39.99 a month I pay for unlimited data with the 700w from Verizon; however, tethering to a laptop is included with Sprint. The 700wx is $499, the 700w is $399, and Verizon is offering an additional $100 rebate on the 700w until Sept. 10.
I am very pleased with the 700w except for two items: lack of available memory to do extensive multi-tasking, and the lack of built-in Wi-Fi. The 700wx has fixed the first problem, but a Palm SD Wi-Fi card is still needed with the 700wx. I know the drivers are built-in for the Wi-Fi card, but you loose the SD card storage etc. when using the Wi-Fi card, and it is inconvenient to remove the SD memeory card everytime you want Wi-Fi. Built-in Wi-FI would be much nicer, particularly if you access NAS drives on your home network frequently.
Since I only use my laptops where Wi-Fi is readily available, I do not have a personal need for the 700wx as modem feature. I would gain the additional memory for programs (which is definitely needed), but I would incur the cancellation charge from Verizon, plus the $499 charge for the new phone. As much as I would love the additional memory, almost $700 (including Verizon cancellation charges) is too high a cost for the memory upgrade. Hopefully one of the third party upgrade firms will offer a memory upgrade for the 700w to give it the same amount of user available memory as the 700wx.
If I did not currently own the 700w, I would definitely purchase the 700wx. The additional memory is well worth the difference in phone costs between the 700w, and 700wx.
I was a BETA tester for Sprint the past 6 weeks using the new Treo 700WX. Testing just stopped a week ago, and I cant see them making many changes that quickly. I give the Treo 700WX unsatisfacory remarks all around. The software is VERY user unfriendly. With the phone I had, you can only send pictures to email, NOT another cellphone. If you have something saved on the phone, IE pictures, you cant send it to the card or vise versa. The phone wasnt capable of uploading your pictures or movies to your online Sprint storage. (I spoke to the tech service, I was asked if I really thought that those features were really needed and they hadn’t planned on using them). The Navigation buttons. In one program for example, the top left button is “Back”. In another program, that button would be “Update” and back would be a button on the touchscreen. Nothing was uniform on how the buttons are layed out. The touch screen icons are too small and you have to use the stylus. Not very easy if you are driving and you need to access contacts or something. I had to disable my touch screen because when in a call, my ear would touch the screen and open up the signal strength window, battery strength window, calendar and alerts window. You have to close each of those windows to access your contacts or anything else So, I disabled the touchscreen while on a call. Now, you cant use the speakerphone feature because the screen has been disabled. Using it as a modem. Usually, everytime after using the phone as a broadband modem, (which did work fairly fast) you would have to do a soft reset, or, would have to wait up to 10 minutes for the modem to disengage or “deactivate” as the phone calls it. On Demand is the same thing as Express. My 650 downloads faster and many less problems. Simple tasks as send a text message are overly complicated by having to press many more buttons than my Treo 650. The only things that I really liked about the phone was its 1.3 MP camera, the new keyboard, and the broadband speeds.
Had I bought this phone I would have returned it within a few days a VERY unhappy customer. I am thankfull that I didnt “upgrade” to it. I spoke to 2 other BETA testers and neither of them had much nice to say about the phone.
In my opinion, save your money and the heartache and dont buy this phone. I am buying a Treo 700P instead. It has the 1.3MP camera, the new keyboard and the broadband speeds. And I know that it is fairly user friendly.
come on people , NO WIFI NO BUY……
id rather use the sd card for GPS …
bug off palm…. i have my treo 650 , and i still dont see a reason to buy.. any of this new treo… for 30 mb more… plz….
Ya’ll make such a big deal about the phone lacking WiFi. It’s a cell phone, not a personal computer. Are you using it to surf the internet for hours a day? Even if you are, why is the Ev-Do inadequate? I can see that the windows mobile software makes things more complicated, but maybe because it’s a much larger OS than PalmOS. If you want things simplified, just get the 700p. Right now I have a 650 and can’t decide which 700 to get. I’m sick of my phone getting locked and having to reset it and maybe with Ev-Do I will use the MobiTv that I pay an extra 10 dollars for a month. Without Ev-Do it has too much lag in the video. I would think that the windows mobile verson would have a little better mulitmedia features. Does anyone know if it is java capable?
hey guys i was looking at this phone, i curently have the treo 650 but have found lots of limits to it my biggest problem is the email programs do not support pics, my old nokia 3620 would show pics in emails all i get is a big X where the pic is, and forget trying to view any type of video from the internet on my treo. and why is that when i send a voice message to some one they can not hear it and i can not hear any one elses messages? i was thinking that the 700wx would solve these problems but it sounds like if they did they would open up alot more any ideas?
Wow what a intresting group of views. I am intrested in purchasing the phone, but judging from the views ” I have been warned”
… as to the why all the hype about NOT having wifi on the 700wx… some of us are trying to get medical professionals to go mobile with secure apps that give them their patient’s info and to be really mobile- you need to have coverage by both cell service and wifi- if you lose one you have the other; especially in big health systems buildings where wifi is everywhere but cell services are not……is the 700wx screen any larger than the 700 w? one or two posts somewhere said yes- I couldn’t find it on the spec sheet…
I recently purchased a Treo 700wx and I do have to say that the lack of Wifi and the lack in screen quality did worry me a bit but after having both a PPC 6700 from Verizon and a Treo 700W from Verizon, I cant complain. There are quite a few changes that have been made to the 700wx that makes its very few flaws accounted for. I personally know quite a few members of the corporate office of Sprint Nextel and they have informed me that they are working very hard to make even more improvements to the 700wx while working hand in hand with Palm and Microsoft.
Im personally not a big fan of Microsoft but was amazed at the reliability and quality of this Treo 700wx. It has less problems than my own desktop does and with being able to support javascript, id say its well worth loosing out on the screen resolution.
With Sprint advancing and expanding their Power Vision/ EVDO coverage by the end of this year, I think its going to leave wifi in the dust. I found that the coverage on most Treos are significantly better than the average phone on any providers service.
I personally send hundreds of text messages a day and more than 2/3 of those go to Verizon or T-mobile customers and I havent experienced any problems. I do know that in an effort to make their network more complete, Sprint upgraded to intercarrier messaging system and Verizon and T-mobile use that same messaging system. Its best to use your resources to call people and get your text messaging and data services re-provisioned if your having any problems.
No electric device is perfect and none are flawless but its the positive attributes that overtake the negative. In my personal opinion, i think Treos overall are one of the best phones ever made but thats my opinion.
When buying a phone, you have to consider your habits and how easy it is to get used to a new phone. Most phones dont have the same software so each phone requires getting used to. The touch screen and the Windows Mobile interface isnt for everyone but that doesnt mean its a bad phone. So for the testers that work for Sprint, they do need to rethink that they are NOT supposed to be testing based upon their habits but they are supposed to test it to see if it would work for others as well as themselves.
If you use a phone for a lot of programs and work, I suggest sticking away from phones made by UTStarcom as they lack memory and programs freeze easily.
With this new Treo, the extra memory makes a significant difference and theres no need to “tweak” your phone just to make it run your programs properly. Its all based upon your usage needs. I personally find that it handels ALL my business needs and i can relax and actually have fun on this phone and not deal with disgusting delays.
Treo’s are worth every penny and when they release the Treo 750 with the very high screen resolution, I will have no problem working hard and slapping 7 to 800 bucks on the tabel cause its well worth it.
In addition, the Treos are the first phones that will have the EVDO A technology and DORA when Sprint launches these services. In addition, Sprint is putting BILLIONS of dollars into building towers, making enhancments and increasing coverage. Its your choice, but make your decision with lots of thought.
