RIM options scandal expands. Chairman resigns.

According to Reuters, U.S. prosecutors in New York are reviewing stock option grants at BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM).

RIM has been contacted by the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and a review is taking place of the company’s option grants. Separately the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission already has a formal investigation into how RIM granted options in the past, after upgrading its probe from an informal review.

Co-Chief Executive Jim Balsillie also announced he would give up his other role as the company’s chairman. RIM, which produces Blackberry feature phones that compete with Palm Treo smartphones, is working on revising its financial statements to bring itself up to date with regulatory filings following a $250 million earnings restatement it announced in March. That restatement came as the company revealed mistakes in how it awarded stock options.
