  1. I think that this could be a iphone killer. look wise, the keyboard has a Centroish look and also looks to have a trackball(Blackberry style?). But then again i belive that the phone has a little of a HTC touch ( Pun intended :D ) i belive that we will have to touch/see it to take up our minds.

  2. Looks nice I am running in a Treo 750 with windows mobile , just so I can have WIFI , cant wait for Palm Pre ,,, I will wait till the Aussie GSM version comes out and have one .

  3. about time they got something new !

  4. The phone looks good, but with new os, will you have to wait forever like the instinct to get 3rd party apps. Sprint is cool but when it comes to apps, they fall short. I switched to the Treo 800w because of that and now switching (maybe)to the touch because of the same issues. Hopefully Palm will resolve ALL issues to this phone before they release it and not leave us like the 800w full of glitches. If it supports microsoft outlook, will it support Office?

  5. “Wireless Charging” ?

    never seen that before…

  6. What we don’t know about it is probably the most important things. Will it run present apps or will we have to shell out hundreds more in software to make the jump?

Otherwise appears to be a nice unit. I especially like the totally different OS and it’s connectivity. I wonder if Hobbyist Software will be getting a kickback as it reminds me very much of their Initiate launcher in many ways.

Also this unit DOES NOT have FCC approval yet so this is pretty much just a marketing piece to me. However, I will probably buy one just for the geek factor and something new to play around with. ;)

  7. I love it. its about time. I’m getting it as soon as its available. I do hope they come out eith a vitual machine so all my apps will work with the new os!

  8. I just hope this linux-based OS Web or Nova is backwards compatible with older Palm OS apps.

  9. No stylus? How to use drafting/sketching programs?
The slide out keyboard will be of no use in landscape mode.

    John

  10. I think it is a start and a bloody good start to getting back to no 1 like they used to be.

No renting os from other people like Msoft who after this if they dont get their act together they might as well colose their mobile division.

Between android palm webos and iphone these 3 could do serious damage to the rest

    regards

  11. Palm is reminding me of Nintendo (early this decade). While Xbox, PSation were selling products left and right, Nintendo was getting buried.

Not so Fast, Nintendo was just cooking up the next best thing in and waiting for the right time.

I think Palm is doing the same thing. The jump from Palm Pro to Palm Pre is amazing. Night and Day.

  12. Palm could see the poll in this site .
They can make device like to Treo 650 but, with GSM,WIFI and other features, but like to treo 650.

  13. I think it’s Web OS and not the hardware that’s the real dazzler here. Enhancing Palm’s best in class PIM functionality with the ability to merge multiple net-based resources into a single presentation (On-device, Outlook, Facebook, Gmail, etc. contacts/calender driving unified E-mail / IM / SMS messaging) is a game changer I don’t think anyone else offers, yet — it will quickly be copied. If the multitasking and ‘card deck’ presentation/notifications management are as slick in the real world as they appeared at CES that will be awfully hard to beat.

Not that the hardware is any slouch either… though I’m saddened to think that it has no microSD. I loved taunting iPhone users with the fact I had double their storage in my 700p; and if it wasn’t enough I could just swap out cards. To go back to an iPhonesque internal 8GB only would be a real shame, especially with SDXC on the way!

  14. I got a TX Cheap, and as far as I can see, Palm still owns PDA. If I have to, I will keep the PDA in the car. G1 can be installed and even a custom ROM. I like the Samsung Instinct, if only it had a wider screen and WIFI. Sprint is too slow at 150kbt internet. PRE has Capacitive screen and no Stylus for Graffiti One. Palm must come with basic programs (utilities). Those you have to buy separately, eh, Palm? Why no Flash Player for You Tube? Kinoma. Then there is this Lag that is described on MobileCrunch? ..”a bit of lag, certain menus wouldn’t open no matter how many times they were poked. With Palm only promising…” They better get this right from the beginning. I had this same problem with the 700p. Processor also too slow to run Graffiti. No rush to get this. I wonder how much PalmStore and “crapware” they burn in to ROM? Can’t imagine paying more then $250. Palm is Road Kill waiting to happen.

  15. I love it. its about time

  16. My initial reactionis to be impressed. I like the design and the GUI looks very nice.

I just hope the price is competitive and that it’s backwards compatible. I would like to see more details about the hardware, as well. For example, will it give me the same functionality of Pocket-tunes Deluxe? How about Docs to Go?

Pre doesn’t have to be an iPhone “killer,” it just needs to be a viable iPhone competitor and it certainly appears to be.

  17. Since word of this came out I have been on hold for getting a new phone. I love my Treo and cant wait for to get my hands on one of these. One problem, going with Sprint exclusively could mean a very slow start to this device. I’m no changing carriers just to get the device so looks like I am waiting till Q3 or Q4 of 2009 before something will be available for the rest of us.

  18. An from reports on the Palm site… it is backwards compatible.

  19. Big questions remain, mostly around the really useful 3rd party PalmOS apps that I rely on.
    1. Does it have the capacity to sync to mulitple contact and calendar folders ala Chapura conduits?
    2. Does it have Documents to Go type capability?
    3. I ain’t buying it unless it has Chapura Turbopasswords or similar program that synchs with the desktop and is integrated into the desktop browser. It will be really nice if web browser in the Pre can store login info like turbopasswords does on the desktop.
    4. Can it run Pocket Quicken?
    5. Can it run Time Expense Auto Keeper or something similar?
    6. Does it have a BugMe+ feature?

  20. Agreed…I live on Datebk6, AvantGo, and a number of other apps.

I need to know that either there are going to be versions of the best apps for this “new” OS, or that the “new” OS will support running the old PalmOS apps before I consider it.

  21. Where’s the chrome? Too much plastic! And, from what I’ve read so far, it’s not backwards compatible with any Palm OS apps. Now we have to start all over, buy new apps, all new accessories, and so on. I’m glad they are trying to improve but I love Palm for what I’ve been using for the fast few years.

  22. i read on one of the reviews that palm would be making other phones for different carriers in 2010, i might have to hold off on getting one of these but only because its on the sprint sucks network. if this thing was on verizon i would have paid full price yesterday.

  23. The phone seems more like something my wife would use. I am so used to the apps on my 755p and how they function I couldn’t imagine doing everything over. Phone looks great though. I would have to let my wife get one just so I could test it out.

  24. I think overall, it beautiful. Certainly different than Palm has every done before, and they needed this. However, the deal breaker for me would be no expansion slot. I carry a lot of stuff, music, podcasts, pictures, documents, my family history, all my databases containing music, movies, travels, etc. This is what I love about my phone. I can carry my world in it and have everything I need and want in one place. I have a Panasonic 32gb card and it’s about 3/4 full most of the time. I cannot imagine being limited to a little over 7gb. The Pro has an expansion slot and will read up to a 32gb card, so why none on this new smartphone?

  25. I love everything about the phone.. But i am slightly pissed that i just brought a centro and now they release this lol.. The wireless charging is a big “WOW” and the web os is a good upgrade, seeing as though blazer iz full of “S**T* I hope they allow users with centros to upgrade to this software.. Or someone hackz it lol. But seeing as it iz based on linux there will probably be a realease for the software sooner or later

  26. i, for one, can’t wait for this to come out. I have been seriously concidering moving over to the iPhone when my contract runs out in a few more months, but NOW, i dunno. I have been an apple/mac fan for a very very long time (my first computer was an apple II g/s), but I have also been a fan of plam for a long time (I owned the 2nd version of palm they came out with as my first one). I have never been sold on the iPhone for biz stuff, and i realy like having a physical keyboard. I’m hopeing that this will have a stylus to use with it for apps that fat fingers (compaired to the stylus) just wont do well with.

  27. That’s great for Sprint users…how about me?!?!? I’m with Verizon….i…want…..it….bad…..not bad enough to switch to Sprint though….any idea if and when Verizon will give me my gadget-fix??

  28. The footnote to the GPS says “Coverage not available in all areas at all times. Requires data services at additional cost.”

Tell me where on Earth (literally) a GPS signal isn’t available? That tells me it’s Sprint-dependent. No phone signal, no GPS.

    Not good.

  29. Some blog traffic wondered whether it would have on-device application sales, like the iPhone does. This from Palm’s developer site states that it will:

“The Palm App Catalog - Palm will provide an on-device application catalog to deliver your apps directly to users.”

    http://developer.palm.com/

  30. I really like this phone and will wait until some of the details get sorted out using the Sprint customers as guinea pigs. I dropped iPhone after a year of waiting for an office suite. I currently have and use a Treo Pro as my daily driver and like it, because of the office suite being built in. Before I but another iPhone with web dependent apps, I’ll just buy a Redfly and make my T.P. my long term user. A smartphone with a great U.I. and an accelerometer based screen orientation is destined to become merely an entertainment/game console with SMS and rudimentary email capabilities for the twenty somethings. Apple has not chosen to compete with their app developers and, consequently, they have no office suite or even cut-and-paste after a year and a half. Palm stepped up an put Documents to Go on the TX and others. WinMO has Pocket Office. iPhone could have Ink, Numbers, and Keynote but doesn’t. Thus iPhone is a glittzy somewhat expensive toy with limited usability for the road warrior. I hope Palm doesn’t go the same way with the Pre.

  31. The Palm Pre looks pretty good….I hope that an office suite come out bundled with it…that’s what makes palms better than all the rest of the other smartphone out there.

  32. I agree with Remysmom. The deal breaker for me is no memory expansion. Maybe not in this one specific device, but maybe in future devices.

  33. I probably have to wait until GSM-version available; for now my Treo 650 is the best

  34. won’t run palm os legacy apps out of the box but at least its ipen source and an emulator will be quick in the making… phone looks great and had an awsome debut at CES. THANKS PALM…ITS ABOUT TIME

  35. best palm product ever made, thanks to former Apple Ipod head designer, employed by palm…

i guess that Palm had to think something usefull API for enabling Palm owners who is still having Palm Os 5 product , to be able to use their old program (.prc) ….

because their history is written by the usage of Palm OS , and i think it will becoming their advantage to create some environment enabling user to use their PRC program in the WebOS…

this is also to accomodate the loyal developer who are always supported Palm all these years like Documents to GO, Pocket Tunes, Coreplayer, and thousand others…..

  36. ah forgot to mention about its STYLUS….

does this WebOS based product using Stylus?

i dont see any sylus in the product, if its true then it will be dissapointing for the people using stylus for making notes and retouching photo, or even using Documents to Go….

  37. I’ve owed until now a TX and a Treo 650 and I can say they are irreplaceble compare to N95 8GB or Iphone. I hope the external Card lot, documents to go, Stylus, and the option to use PalmOS 5 aplicatons will be available with this new Treo… Palm please don’t dissapoint us, your loyal users and supporters
