Palm Desktop 6.2 Beta for Windows Vista Available

Palm announced availability of a Windows Vista-compatible version of Palm Desktop. The software is in beta, and is being provided by Palm “AS IS” (meaning without warranty of any kind).

What’s new? Most of the basics for Vista users. The software has earned Microsoft’s “Works with Windows Vista” designation. HotSync Manager 7 and Install Tool work on Vista, so users can sync .prc and .pdb files (Palm OS applications and databases) to Treo smartphones. Outlook 2007 synchronization is also possible via USB cable.

What’s not in the software? This version does NOT include:

  • Palm Quick Install Tool: If a Palm OS application or device update uses a desktop wizard to guide you through the installation process, the wizard relies on the Palm Quick Install Tool, which is not available in this beta version. You will not be able to install handheld or smartphone software that is packaged in this manner. However, if the application is simply a .prc or .pdb file (Palm OS application or database), you can use the Install Tool to transfer it to your device.
  • VersaMail synchronization: You will not be able to sync email through the USB sync cable. Wireless email sync is not affected by this limitation.
  • You must uninstall previous versions: This version of Palm Desktop is only intended for new installations on Windows Vista. It does not support the upgrade of pre-existing Palm Desktop installations to this new version. You must uninstall old versions of Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager prior to installing this beta version. We show you how, below.
  • English only: Other languages are NOT supported.

  1. I had to disable To Do, Memo, and Media syncing for it to work properly with my 755p.

  2. I installed it without a hitch though strangely had to change the USB port that I was plugged into before it would hotsync. The Hotsync setup has been improved upon but my God when you see how bland and grey it all looks when in the desktop.

With this beta there is no changing the desktop colour settings or themes.

Worst of all you have no colour or indicators for your different categories in the diary. There is no way of determining which category an event belongs to without double clicking on them.

  3. Does it have a USB driver for Vista64?

  4. palm desktop sucks

  5. Beta says: “Outlook 2007 synchronization is also possible via USB cable.” but it doesn’t show up in the list of applications, so no syncing to Outlook 2007 for me. :-(

  6. I installed it with a vista error about a driver problem. When i hotsynced, my plam would reboot after every hotsync. I did a soft reset and the problem went away.

My documents to go started to work and sync my documents. Then i noticed that it was syncing with the palm desktop and not with Outlook. When i changed to outlook, the documents to go interface quit working. It started hanging up during the hotsync just like before the upgrade to Vista beta. I had to disable the documents-to-go interface. now everything seems to work good.

  7. Despondo: I was having the same issue (not being able to select Hotsync with Outlook 2007). I installed Outlook 2007 Update (http://www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/outlook2007/outlook2007update.html) to get this functionality. Download and install the update. Go to the Start menu and under “Palm”/”PIM conduit sync” run “Sync with Outlook.” It’ll ask to confirm and after a moment, it’ll restart Hotsync Manager. Check Settings under Applications, and you should see that Outlook conduits have been created and activated.

  8. I setup verizon wirelless mail to get email on my Treo 700p. Now Hotsync will not sync my Calendar, task, contacts, and Memo applications. I get the following message:

date b ook application database is not found. please invoke the date book application on the handheld once and re-synchronize.

I have done this several times with no luck.

  9. My Vista laptop is fitted with the Desktop and Install tool(s) that came with my old Treo650.

Calendar, Contacts, etc. have always worked, but for a while I couldn’t install (”Windows cannot find…”). Now for some reason, the combination seems to work for installs.

I don’t sync outlook - just calendar and contacts - so don’t know about that.

  10. I see that some people are having difficulties with vista x64 drivers.
    So have I
When I ask for support at Palm they give me no serious solutions
    Like install 6.1.4E or 6.2
I hope they give a definite solution soon

  11. Why put up with WINDOWS VISTA BETA version when all VISTA users need to to is Right Click on the Palm Destop Icon, Go to Properties , Compatability, make it Compatable with Windows XP. That’s it DONE, No Problems.

    Try It

  13. johngrant: Good advice. However, I tried this with no success. The Palm Desktop/HotSync Beta are working fine for me, especially with the Outlook 2007 conduits.
