In July we independently confirmed that rumors about the upcoming Treo Nitro & Lennon models were true. Palm is indeed going to release two new devices this year, one of which will have UMTS and Class 10 EDGE, a 1.3 mega pixel digital camera, WiFi, and Windows Mobile 5.0 with MSFP. We also confirmed that the form factor of these models will mark the first material deviation by Palm from that established by the Treo 600 four years ago.

Today, PalmInfocenter discovered images on a Chinese PDA message board that correctly reflect our understanding of the form factor of the upcoming devices. Although we cannot confirm the authenticity of the images, we believe they are of the Palm OS Nitro (”Lowrider”). An earlier leaked “road map” from Cingular suggested that this will be the fourth new Treo model this year, immediately following the Lennon.

The model depicted in the new images runs Palm OS Garnet and has 64 megabytes of internal memory. It appears to be smaller than existing Treo models, with no discernable external antenna. The SD card slot is positioned on the right side. It has a similar keyboard layout to the Treo 700p.

  1. According to the Chinese website that PalmInfocenter listed, the poster (posted in Chinese) said that the connectors at the bottom are re-arranged as well. So the 600/650 accessories will not be applicable. Also, there’s only 64Mb. He didn’t mention how much user-accessible RAM is there. The SD card slot is moved to the side as illustrated, and it’s not micro-SD.

  2. Man I want this phone!

  3. Re-arranged connectors at the bottom don’t necessarily mean that 600/650 won’t work anymore. From the little that can be seen on these pictures it’s well possible (and likely, IMHO) that the universal connector is still the same universal connector.

  4. Is this rumored for a Sprint release? I just got my first Treo, 600, and love it. I want to upgrade to a 700p but may just wait for this if it’s scheduled for a Christmas release. Thanks for any help.

  5. Anyone know if this is rumored for Sprint? I’m not sure if I should get a 700p or wait for this. Thanks for any advice.

  6. So Palm Cobalt 6.1 remains a dream. Too Bad.

  7. The new features are certainly needed on this phone (1.3 camera, WiFi, etc.) Not having the antenna stick out of the unit is a bonus but no big deal. I think Palm has to remember that most customers are still in contract on this phone and those that are not have laid out a good amount of money ($500.00) to purchase the phone. I think they should spend a bit more time perfecting the software and a bit less time with new cool stuff.

Also, just my 2 cents - but I will NEVER have a pda phone with MS Smart Phone. I had a pda with MSCE on it, and it was the worst.

  8. it’s starting to look like a black berry

  9. It looks downright stupid without the antenna.

Now, there is nothing to make the Treo stand out among the Samsungs, LG, BBs, SEs and what-have-you.

Alright antenna haters, I give up! You had your way and I hope you all are satisfied.

  10. I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again, “when designing a new phone, start with predeccesors shortcomings, weaknesses, flaws and build from there.” the advancements shown here do not impress or excite. this is coming from someone who has sold palms, had the 650 since day 1(nov 04′), and who returned the 700p becuase the 650 has better form factor. please understand.

  11. AMEN, GreenHex! I couldn’t have said it better. I LOVE the antenna on all the existing Treos. Just got a 700p a couple months back and love the form factor. Without the antenna it does blend in way too easily with all the other candy-bar styled smart phones out there.

It’s like buying a Porche 911 Carrerra without the spoiler - WHO DOES THAT??? And how odd does it look everytime you see one without it? Be honest now…

  12. Wait…All of these comments are asking what US carriers will offer this phone, but it was my understanding that this phone is for the European market only?! Am I misinformed?

  13. I don’t get it. Do they think kids in high school are buying these things. Many people in the corporate world can’t have camera’s. Probably one of many reasons why blackberry is going to eventually kill the plam platform.

They don’t seem to know their customers (or at least a large number of them).

  14. would be nice for tero have one for t-mobile with win 5.0 if anyone can ans. that email me at hailraisers@aol.com

  15. its funny about the comment that was said earlier…I work at a high school and have had my 650 for a while now..and i make fun of all these kids with SIDEKICKS 1-3 and tell them how much cooler my phone is not to mention i actually use my phone other than to make calls..i DO ALL MY BUSINESS on it.. but now they are being seen on RAP music videos being held by rappers and guess what alot of these kids want the treos now…WHY WHY WHY

  16. After having a 300 all the way through the 650, each and every phone, I think Palm has improved on the precedign quite nicely. The deletion of the antenna is welcome. I do wish the case was a bit sturdier,e specially around the screen area. And instead of painting the unit, embed the color or jsut make it all silver or black.

The QTEC in europe is a great phone, thinner and runs MS well. SO I hope they take some of those features and incorporate them into this one too.

  17. I think that most of these ideas are pretty good…so alow me to throw my nickle into the “wish fountain”…… software first… add messenger software (msn, yahoo, aol), more options for “phone” screen color without using 3rd party influence, the ability to copy from web browser(if there is a 3rd party browser for this someone PLEASE let me know) , be able to attach a locked photo a contact, and last but not least..the ability to turn off the keyboard light at will! hardware…keep the antenna…everything else is good! By the way I had the 650 and have now upgraded to the 700p ( I’m having mental issues with windows on a palm device)

  18. Reggiep, you might want to try NetFront, which you can download from
    http://www.maritime-billeder.dk/archive/palm.php
Not sure if works on the treo, though.

For messenging, you could try agile messenger:
    http://updates.am-im.net/AgileMessenger.prc

For the keyboard light you could try this:

    or this:
    http://mytreo.net/downloads/details-682.html
    or maybe this:
    http://mytreo.net/downloads/details-739.html

    Hope this helps.
