While attending the Digital Life conference in New York City earlier this week, mytreo.net’s Tadd Rosenfeld had the opportunity to talk privately with Phil McClendon, Palm’s product manager responsible for the Treo 680. This article contains three video excerpts from the meeting: (i) a close look at the new Treo Phone application, (ii) a demonstration of Google Maps, and (iii) Palm’s explanation for why the Treo 680 has a standard SD slot compared to a miniSD on the Treo 750v.

  1. The slimmer, antenna-less form factor and application modifications are very nice. Many experienced Treo users feel that this is not an upgrade from the 650. I disagree.

I have used both the 600 and 650 for several years now. While I absolutely love the 650, the mods with the 680 would be enough to justify an upgrade for me ~ especially given the price point. This is something that many power users fail to address.

At a sticker price of $199 I’d upgrade for the added memory, new form factor, color choices and new applications.

I was surprised to see the backlash from the treo community regarding this new device. Power users who are complaining that this is not enough of an upgrade should be ashamed. Palm is trying to increase their market share by targeting a whole new audience. I see an increase in market share to be a *good* thing, not a bad thing.

    Think about it.

  2. I would have changed my treo 650 with the new Treo 680 if it would have had a mega pixel camera instead of a VGA again! I just wonder why they didn’t put a mega pixel camera on this Treo 680?

  3. I like the phone screen

  4. Does the new Treo 680 have EVDO?

  5. Acctually I hope palm will be able to focus more into Europe, but without UMTS this will not be so easy. Also a better camera would have been great

  6. how can a 1200 battery be considered an ‘upgrade’? (unless there are two in the box with a cradle/charger)? Hope this 680 is alot faster than the 650, cause users will have a lot less time to use it with the provided battery.

  7. simply again , study shows plam still losing , 650 to upgrade.. unless they lost it or it brook.. magic word will be a hot cake in the market
DAM* ( WIFI ) and dont tell me plzz ohh you brows the net of wifi.. and evdo is super fast.. i know all that.. but if you true business man or IT , i need wifi .. Simply to log on to your network.. dowload and upload files.. intade of walking with treo case cd and cradel and cables.. to transfer files of any network you want too..
so please plam..and cell phone providers.. treo users.. wont stop signing up for your internet data plane.. and they wont buy your ringtones of your site with $1.99 , so plz put the wifi in!!! wont make a diffrent

  8. With every phone company introducing 3G phone into the market and most of the PDA phone now come with WIFI, it is quite surprising that the 680 does not have either of these function, In Singapore there will be free WIFI all over the country from next year, without WIFI build in, the phone will not take off in this market.

  9. I got more pics here

  10. cplow70 asked the important question: Does it have EVDO!?!

  11. maritess says:
… I just wonder why they didn’t put a mega pixel camera on this Treo 680?

    >>Cost! They needed to keep the price down on the device to attract a larger audience. I have talked to many people who have always seen my 650 but did not want to spend that money for it, but at $199 not tied to any carrier, they are will to buy and the vga camera means little because they have nothing to compare it to. (New Treo Owners). Our community is growing.

I for one am upgrading just for the color selection, memory and DUNS capability that was locked out on my 650.

  12. As far as the camera is concered, I have the 700p and although it has a higher resolution, it is basically only useful outside and on a VERY well lit area. Basically only making it half useful. 650 camera I was able to use pretty much everywhere. I think Palm did a smart job on this phone, including the camera.

  13. First,

Upgrade?, it all depends on what the previous Palm Owner had before, so don’t go off rambbling about how it is or it isn’t.

    Second,

Very true on how Palm is Marketing to a new audience, frankly, i find this rather intresting, Business or Pleasure. If anyone who should be complaining is Non-Palm Users for not having one.

    Third,

I think it’s Wonderfull how people try and point flaws out of Palm Devices, This Shows how much importance Palm really does have to such an audience, and if it didn’t, well, they wouldn’t really be talking about it then, would they.

    WESTSIDE!!!!

  14. “Power users who are complaining that this is not enough of an upgrade should be ashamed. Palm is trying to increase their market share by targeting a whole new audience.”

I think that misses the point. It is not a question of either-or: either you increase the market share or you get a real power user upgrade machine. They could have done both and given those of us who may be power users a GSM version of the 750 or even 700, but they did not. Instead they give us this cheesy minimal upgrade or force us to abandon the Palm OS for the MonopolySoft Mobile PC. But those of us who don’t want to subsidize MonopolySoft have nowhere to go now, although I’ve heard there are two new Samsung machines which just might give Palm and Gates a run for their money. We shall see.

  15. “Hope this 680 is alot faster than the 650″

It is my understanding from a developer who has been using the 680 for a while already that the processor is actually somewhat SLOWER than the 650! Check it out. I am confident he is right.

  16. aw he11s be11s, VGA STILL!!??
I am faithfully married to my treo, but is it time to call the attorney?

  17. when is this phone available! i love the 650 cant wait to get my hands on the 680

  18. What i would like to know is what are the Major differences with the treo 650 and the treo 680, because i love treo 650 and at the moment would find it hard part with any cash unless the change in spec, made the change worth while and worth the expense.

  19. I think its important to look at the model number Palm selected for this new device: “680″. Which is less than “700″ or “750″, and barely higher than “650″. I think that describes pretty well the new device’s capabilities: only slightly better than the 650 (and only in some areas apparently), but not a new power user/high-end device like the 700. I personally will stick with my 650, with my eye still on a 700p as my next device. The 680 isn’t marketed to “power users”, so I’m not going to complain that it doesn’t have every single feature I’m looking for. If it did, then it would cost a lot more than $200!

  20. I wish they would have put the money into fixing the glitches with the 700P - they would raise market share if potential buyers aren’t reading that people that spent big bucks are having rebooting, lock-up, volume, etc. issues with it…

  21. about th cam.. i use it all the time, but not in low lit areas.. treo shoud be ashamed that 29.99 cameras are better! and with built in flash!! what gives palm.. thats the upgrade we need.. VGA is so last century!!! also, bigger sd slots mean nothing.. whats really goin on palm?

  22. Why cingular? Do they have somthing against sprint
