Amber Alerts On Your Treo Now

Code Amber (codeamber.org), an organisation set up to broadcast Amber Alerts on the web, has extended its service to sending alerts to cell phones by SMS.

Amber Alerts is an country wide system in the USA and Canada that broadcasts alerts on child abductions. The original Amber Plan was formed in 1996 after 9 year old Amber Hagerman was abducted whilst riding her bicycle in Arlington (Texas) and later brutally murdered. The original plan was for local radio stations to broadcast alerts of abductions in the hope of preventing another terrible incident.

In 2003, White House legislation made the Amber Alert a national system. Code Amber was set up to broadcast Amber Alerts on the internet via their web page. They now allow people to sign up to receive Amber Alerts via SMS on their cell phones. Code Amber also covers Canadian alerts.
