BackupBuddy.Net Basic Review

Have you ever been concerned that you would find yourself away from your computer for a long period of time, and that your SD backup card might got lost or became corrupted? How would you restore your data after a Hard Reset?

You don’t have to worry any more. BackupBuddy.Net Basic safely backs up and restores your PIM data (contacts, calendar, tasts, memos) to Blue Nomad’s server wirelessly. The Premium Version, which is being beta tested for release in the near future, backs up and restores your Treo’s entire internal memory.

Not only can you set the times at which BackupBuddy.Net Basic will back up your data, but you can choose the “trickle” method. With the trickle method, any change you make to your PIM data is automatically backed up to the server without your even thinking about it. It really couldn’t be any easier. If you have an unlimited data plan, I highly recommend using this trickle back up feature. If your data is limited, you can set BackupBuddy.Net to perform a backup at some predetermined time, within a choice of two hour blocks (ie between 6-8 pm, or 2-4 am).

I hadn’t planned on giving BackupBuddy.Net Basic quite the thorough testing I did. But I’m happy to say it passed the acid test with flying colors. Not only did I have multiple corrupt files on my SD card, but my Palm desktop was trashed! I needed to start over from scratch, both formatting my SD card, and removing my Palm desktop.

I held my breath as I deleted my Palm desktop and renamed the entire remaining folder (not just my backup folder), and then did a Hard Reset on my Treo 650. Firing up Blazer, I went straight to BackupBuddy.Net Basic and downloaded the PRC. I then ran Backupbuddy.net Basic and was prompted to restore my data. It took about 2 minutes, and even the calendar entry I’d added in only hours before showed up. (The trickle method is truly awesome!) The restore was a breeze.

BackupBuddy.Net Basic retails for $29.95 annually, however is available this week for $19.95 from mytreo.net/store. Subscribers to the Basic service will receive a free upgrade to the premium service, when it’s available. In this reviewer’s opinion, the service is well worth the peace of mind.

  1. Anyone know if the ‘trickle’ feature will be made available for the client version of BackupBuddy?

I don’t need wireless backup, but I would like automatic imcremental backups to the SD card.

  2. My PIM data syncs wirelessly to the server at my office. Is there any reason I would need this service (setting aside the full backup option that’s in beta testing)?
