Should you replace your voicemail with YouMail?

Using alternate voicemail with Sprint can be painful. Sprint customer service very begrudgingly changed my "no answer, forward" number to YouMail so that I could try it out.

(N.B. for Sprint customers: The customer service representative (CSR) who I spoke to assured me that customers can now set the "no answer, forward" number themselves. Unfortunately, the code she gave me to use didn't work. So be firm with Sprint CSR if you want to take advantage of services like YouMail.)

YouMail has some innovative and fun features. The basic premise behind YouMail is that everyone should be greeted personally, and traditional voicemail doesn't do that. So while you can have a standard outgoing message to everyone, you can also have dozens of personal outgoing messages played to individual callers that you can change whenever you want. YouMail matches your caller's caller ID with your address book to give each caller a totally unique voicemail experience.

DotMobi

Wouldn't it be nice if domain naming followed a standard protocol? Vance Hedderel, Director of PR and Communications at dotMobi certainly thinks so. In this CTIA interview, Vance tells us the point behind standardization, and who is behind the movement.

With the plethora of devices available with internet access, it becomes more and more important for internet content providers to be aware of the needs of the consumer. It is even more important for those commercial content providers. Listen to Vince explain his thoughts about the benefits of this intelligent naming convention.

Do you need protection?

Much has been discussed in the forums about screen protectors. We almost universally agree that they are a necessity, but which is the best? That decision is about to become just a little harder. Listen to Kirk Feller, and watch him demonstrate BodyGuardz, a seemingly indestructible shield for your screen or your entire device.

Dial2Do

After speaking to Ivan McDonald about Dial2Do at CTIA, I was really anxious to try their service. I logged on as soon as I returned home. After about 10 days I received my invitation to join the closed beta.

Looking forward to comparing Dial2Do with Jott, I started adding contacts. Any time I can import contacts, I'm happy, and being able to import my entire address book and then check off the ones I actually wanted to use in Dial2Do made me very happy!

Flirting via text message

Have you ever met someone great, gotten their phone number, but it never seemed to turn into a date?

Recently, Nick Savoy, President of Love Systems, Inc., wrote an article
and recorded a podcast for mytreo.net to introduce what he calls “dating science.” He explored techniques taught by his twenty instructors at one of the most successful social coaching companies in the world. Nick’s instructors and methodology were recently featured on Dr. Phil, Keys to the VIP, Fox News and a host of other top shows.

Thanks to popular culture, women are bombarded with strategies for attracting men. Widely read magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Allure, Vanity Fair and Glamour are arsenals of ideas. As a result, women are generally comfortable talking freely among themselves about attraction. Men, however, have few good sources for information, and are discouraged from discussing the subject matter, which for them can be considered taboo.

Email from SEVEN

For an introduction to SEVEN, refer to our article, "True Push e-mail for Free? Yes!"

When Scott Boehmer caught up with me at CTIA, I forgave him immediately for running a little late. How can you hold a grudge against someone whose main cell phone is a Centro?!

Scott is the Director of Marketing and Sales for SEVEN, and he’s not just the Director, he’s an end user with all the interest and concerns as the rest of us. As a matter of fact, when I asked about my biggest complaint with SEVEN’s email client for Palm OS, he was right there with me. Unfortunately, he also confided that the development team doesn’t necessarily listen to him either, but they’re working on better support for a true IMAP experience.

Bling bling for your ring ring

To bling or not to bling. That is the question. Of course, there is such a wide range of cell phone accessory bling available now, you can go from tacky to tasteful by merely changing cases.

The CTIA 2008 cellular phone conference was proof that accessory manufacturers have suddenly realized there are at least as many women as men with mobile phones. And by some stroke of luck, they realized that women are far more likely to buy and own multiple cases for those phones than men. They are, after all, accessories – and accessorizing is something at which we women have excelled for generations. I have captured two shining examples in video that take you from the refined to the "so over the top I am at a loss for words."

RedFly Review

Back when we first started hearing about the Foleo, and the term "mobile companion" was new, I didn't get it. So when Celio contacted us about the RedFly, I was curious. I wanted to see a mobile companion first-hand - so I could figure out what the point was.

When I received the package with the RedFly, I opened it with less than enthusiasm. I pulled the device out, and I still didn't get it. Now I must admit, at this point a part of me didn't want to get it because the RedFly doesn't work with Palm OS devices, but I dug in regardless. And the funny thing is, after about 15 minutes I suffered from that "oh my God" moment, because in that moment, I got it.

Why I Love Genius

In this look at Hobbyistsoftware's program Genius, mytreo.net forum member Perry Gonzalez tells us why he loves the application, and gives us some insight into its many uses.

There is nothing better than always being right. RIGHT?
Especially in a group of people who are discussing…whatever.

So recently a group of us were figh- I mean "debating" over who played Fred Mertz in I Love Lucy. We actually couldn’t come up with any names. It was more like,
"Remember the guy from my three sons?"
"Wasn’t he in The Three Stooges?"
"I think he played the Cowardly Lion."

Free e-mail and SMS dictation with Jott

As I'm driving to school, I suddenly remember something I needed to tell my mother. But at this hour, she's not likely to have her phone on. If I wait until I get to school, I'll have forgotten what I wanted to tell her, and I really can't email while driving. So I Jott her.

Speed dialing is a snap when driving, so I just speed dial Jott, and dictate a quick email. It's off my mind, and waiting on her computer when she logs in to read her email with her morning coffee. The quality of the voice recognition is truly remarkable, but the even more astounding part, is that Jott is absolutely free!
