Using MusicTones To Install MP3 Ringtones

Well, I just bought my first Treo, a GSM Treo 650! At first, I was bummed to learn that without a third party application, I couldn’t use MP3 ringtones. But then I found MTDN and a program called Music Tones, and it works well and is easy to use, so in this guide, I’m going to show you how to use it and make it work like you want it to.

Required software: MusicTones

First off, why MusicTones? MiniTones vs. MusicTones is a question that comes up frequently, and here’s the answer. Both apps get the job done equally efficient. However, MusicTones is more stable on newer devices, such as the 680, 700p, 755p, and Centro.

Now, onto ringtones. You can use almost any MP3 song. I say almost because some files may not work. If you have an incompatible file, skip to the Troubleshooting section at the bottom of this article.

In this shot, it shows you the main view of Music Tones. Select the song you want. Generally, music files are stored in the AUDIO folder, but I like to keep them in the root directory.

Trimming a MP3 File

After you import the file, trim it down to the part you want, then press OK. Keep in mind that the ringtones will be stored on the handheld’s memory, so 30 seconds should be fine. That’s about how long the phone will ring. Be sure to set the volume to maximum (which would keep it at its the original volume).

After that, scroll down to Sounds.

And now tap on Tones.

Then, change the three ring tones to the song you have just imported. Once you select the song, you will hear a preview of it. That’s it! It’s just that easy!!!

Troubleshooting

The imported song doesn’t play, or it only plays for a second.

  • Not all MP3s are compatible. Most are, but if you come across one that isn’t, I would recommend converting them to WAV, and then back to MP3 (using your computer). There are a bunch of free WAV/MP3 converters, so try searching the web for one.

MP3 files do not show up in MusicTones.

  • Unfortunately, MusicTones only works with a SD card. If you don’t already have one, it is recommended that you get one. They’re not very expensive, and you can store apps, games, music, pictures, videos, etc. on it.

Ringtones are very soft, even though the original file is loud.

  • Make sure that when you import the file, the volume slider is at maximum volume. If it’s set to maximum volume, the imported file will have the same volume level as the original file.
