Handmark Express - New SMS Installation Method

In my previous article, “1-2-3 Guide to Installing Treo Software Over The Air (OTA)“, I explained how easy it is to download programs directly to your Treo. Well Treo fans, the bar has been raised.

Handmark, creator of Pocket Express, has introduced a new way to receive applications wirelessly on your Treo.

I recently had the pleasure to speak with Tom McKeon, Vice President of Channel Sales for Handmark, who explained the process, and walked me through an installation. This procedure is available for Pocket Express. Once installed, you can also access an online store within the application to purchase several other programs directly on your Treo. (N.B. As for all wireless software installations, an unlimited data plan is a good idea.)

The new method cannot get any simpler.

Open your Messaging program, and tap on New.

Once you are in the “Compose” section, type 78247 in the “To” line as shown.

In the message section, simply type ‘pexme’. Tap “Send” and your message is away.

Tap on the highlighted hyperlink in the “Inbox” to open and read.

Once you tap on the hyperlink, you will be sent off to your web browser. You will connect to the internet and be provided the option to download the “Activate PRC”.

The location you choose should have about 150k of free space for this program. I will be downloading to Device. Tap on “Yes” to continue.

Now tap on “Save and open”

I now have the “Activate” icon in my “Unfiled” folder. Tap on “Activate” to continue.

You are now provided the choice to download the main program to either internal memory or an expansion card (if installed). I will choose “Internal”. (I could not grab a screen shot of this page, but you will understand when it pops up.)

The next page asks for your zip code. This is used to provide you updated local weather, movie listings in local theaters, etc. Enter your information and tap the accept terms and conditions box. Tap “Continue”.

The program download now begins. Once it is complete, you will be rewarded with this next screen.

Tap on the OK and the program will continue with the installation, account setup, and updating of the information channels available.

Hats off to Handmark for this innovative download method. Look for more great things to come from this software company. Oh, and if you have some time, you might be interested in entering the contest sponsored by Handmark to win a new Porsche Cayman!

  1. In the review it state you need 150 of space?? Mine is well over 600 and i have my channels stored on my card. Am i missing something??

  2. I did as you instructed. When I hit Send, the 78247 disappears and I get an error message “Need Address. There is no recipient for this message.”

  3. This program is already installed into the ROM of my Sprint 700p (under the alias of “On Demand”) whether I want it or not.

Still, this is an interesting way to simplify installations. Though it makes me worry at how easily bad stuff can now also be sent to phones through a little social networking…

  4. I was able to do everything explained just fine. The only concern I’m hoping I didnt misconstrue is the fact that it’s free and permanent app, not just a trial. Other than that, I like it =).
