Am I the only one who can't get this jaun to work right?  If I try to use the press and hold method, then I get the problem where it launches the app.  If I use the pop-up method, it comes on but won't go away properly

Not sure why this misbehaving for you. If you are in "hold" mode and end up launching the app that's mapped to the button, then you didn't hold it long enough. KGT+ will pass the button press through if it's quicker than about 1/3 second.

In "press" mode (which is what I assume you mean by pop-up?), any press will pop up KGT+, which you can dismiss either by touching the screen, or touching a key. However, if you touch the same key again, it will dismiss, then send that key. This is so you don't lose the key function altogether.

One final note, it's not necessary to uninstall, or even disable ClockPop5. In fact, they're quite compatible - though I believe KGT+  is better.  Wink You can even map them both to the same key, by setting KGT+ "after pressing". If you press once, you'll get KGT+. If you press twice, and hold on the second press, you'll get KGT+, then ClockPop5, If you press twice, and make the second press quick enough to avoid the ClockPop5 popup, you'll get KGT+ then the app that is actually mapped to the button. Try it, it's kind of fun even if it's a little twisted!

Super job tmt! The app is working like a charm.

Since you are in the "enhancement" mode, besides the suggestion of a darker grey background and no shadows, is there a way to make the time size alittle bigger? Don't do organ transplant but make some minor plastic surgery. Tongue

Cheers and keep up the app of the year!

Thanks for the replies yall.

Just to clear up, KGT is indeed "working" for me, just not correctly.  I have it set so that I can use only the press and hold launch method.  When I press and hold the button (i use calendar - 2nd hardkey), the KGT display comes up just fine - it is just that after I release the button, then it launches the application mapped to that button (Calendar).  And this is for no matter how long I hold it.  Just to note, the same thing happens for me for ClockPop5 when mapped to n e key except the Power key (since that is mapped to nothing), which I believe others have previously noted.

Ideally IMO atleast, I wish there were a way to make KGT be launchable in a manner like SnapCalc5 - a popup from a press and hold.  Maybe an addition to consider.  N e what, holla

I'm also seeing cases where the "while holding" is passing through.

If I have KGT assigned to "while holding" and on any button, then the press&hold traps of other applications work as normal on all buttons except the Calendar button.  That one will get the press&hold behaviour, but then pass the Calendar keypress through to the calendar.  This happens with KGT press&hold for any button.

Also, if while in "while holding" mode and the KGT display up, it I tap on the screen, the KGT display is dismissed and the button I was holding is passed through as a button press.  This happens in all apps with KGT assigned to any of the buttons.

I'd noticed previously that mVoice's one-button recording on a press&hold had a similar response where no matter which button it was on, when it was monitoring, my press&hold actions on the Calendar button would pass through a calendar press afterward.

I generally was running ClockPop5 on press&hold of the Calendar button, but have also experimented with McPhling and DateSnap as other press&hold monitoring apps.  For completeness, in this trial, I'm running the normal Phone app on my Phone button, DateBk5 5.4a on my Calendar Button, Chatter 1.0.5bx on my Mail button.  (And have set when DateBk5 is running, presses of the Calendar button cycles through DateBk5 views; and when in Chatter, pressing the mail button cycles through mail folders.)  I no generally run mVoice on my device (I stumbled upon the conflict while evaluating it), but am running McPhling 5.7 on press&hold on my Mail button, and ClockPop5 on the Calendar.  All of this on a Sprint Treo650.

Were it not for the passing through button presses on screen tapping, I'd have written the conflict off as the peril of running a seriously overloaded power-user set-up.  However, I am hopeful that this clue will lead to sorting out where the conflict lies.

After all that event trapping, my other three requests/comments were mostly cosmetic.  First, I saw earlier in the thread that a memory reporting item is already in the works for a future version.  I'm looking forward to that.  I also noticed that you'd addressed the behaviour of the Sample Presets setting appearing to stomp on the user settings as a low priority item - hopefully that might get addressed in the documentation/notes somewhere along the line.  And lastly, is there any likelihood of implementing a seconds display in the (digital at least) clock?

Thanks!  This is such a wonderful improvement!

I'm not sure what is causing these button issues. One thing that is possible is that the system is delivering events to the background apps in unpredictable order. If this is the case, the fewer such apps you have enabled, the better. Maybe turn some of them off as a test, to see if things improve? Another thing to try is to use a different button. I have found the most reliable behavior comes from the Side button on my 650. This may simply be because it's the least fought-over. I will investigate.

There's an issue identified in the battery "voltage" display by the way. It reports the voltage exactly .49V higher than it actually is. The vestige of some old roundoff code...

Do you mean the popup would occur only after press&hold, then stay until dismissed? Kind of like KGT+'s current press-mode, but with a hold.

On weird button trapping followup, I found also that if KGT+ is enabled in any setting (Power, Keyguard, Press, or Hold) that it eats something in FindHack that results in launching the system find dialog after completing the FindHack find process.  Passing this intended to be swallowed event is demonstably tied to KGT activation.

Yes, in part.  The way SnapCalc works is that after a press&hold, it will popup (like the "press" mode), and then there is a "Done" button I can press that will take me right back to where I was (though the screen tap would be sufficient means to exit).  I would mainly want this because i still want the normal single press action of the hard keys, although I am for now content to just use ClockPop.

Also, would it be possible to have the seconds shown in the KGT+ display too?

A couple of other enhancements I'd love to see, but recognize as getting out of scope, would be:

* resizing the sound/mute icon to fit the footprint already in use for the bluetooth, IR, card icons.

* an indicator in the signal strength icon for data connection and state (grey or green arrows)
* redrawing the number of bars in the signal strength indicator to proportionally represent indicated strength.
* option to show either the signal strength bars or the numeric value in an icon footprint closer to the others.

* modify the battery icon display to graphically indicate charging/full/on.battery
* option to suppress numeric charge state

* the proposes memory indicator to mesh in with any implementation of above suggestions
* possibly including a free heap indicator as well as user accessible ram indicator

And another observation from this morning - and I think this is an accidental but beneficial feature rather than a bug is that having the KGT clock display on (via a button press) and waiting eats card insert events.  nice way to be able to insert a card without getting bumped out of my current application!

Okay, I took a look at the issues last night and have some fixes.

- The double-event (that bklech found when exiting FindHack) is fixed. This was a one-liner and a pretty interesting situation. The fix may improve an occasional double-keyguard that one or two users have seen.

- Corrected the Voltage display to reflect the actual battery value in .01V.

- Fixed a possible bad pointer issue in the popup code.

I also added an enhancement button mode: Pop up "after holding". I liked DickieD's suggestion and it's easy to implement as a third selection with the after-press and while-hold modes, you might want to give it a try.

Basically, this is hold-mode with a sticky display. A quick press performs the usual button action, a long press pops up KGT+. But instead of dismissing when you release, it stays there until you press a key again, or touch the screen. Like after-press mode, the display will refresh periodically.

Another cool thing about the mode is that the Center button works pretty well with it, so the program doesn't suppress using Center like it does with after-press. There is a special case for the key in this mode though: it doesn't pass through if you use the same key to dismiss. It was just too annoying otherwise.

As for the enhancement suggestions - great stuff, keep 'em coming! I'll consider them all. Some of them are already planned:

Data indicator in signal strength.
Battery graphical fill level, also the little "zap" will indicate plugged-in status.
Memory status (graphical or text) for ram, card and heap.
(plus some or all of the other suggestions...)

It was requested that the signal strength bars show the signal level - in fact they do this already. They should roughly follow the signal level shown in the regular system gadget. If they don't, let me know what kind of Treo you're using, what network you're on and what the KGT+ meter is showing for raw signal versus what its bars are doing.

I'll release the new version (5.0.1) later on today. Enjoy!

5.0.1 rocks!  Totally working fine so far on my device.  The button presses and pass-throughs all do what I expect on a cursory examination.

As for my earlier comment on the Signal bar strength for the phone icon.  On my Sprint T650 I always see full bars in the icon, and regularly see reported signal strength in the 70-80 range where I'm not seeing full bars in my standard signal icon.  I've seen this at lower signal levels too, but haven't been able to confirm it this morning.  (From popping up KGT while in the phone app for example.  Popping up KGT from in Treo Helper does confirm that the reported signal number matches what it says.)

Thanks for the new "press&hold&hold" option, tmt...

...Unfortunately, it still doesn't work for me.  After I press and hold the button to get the KGT display screen, no matter what I do to get it off of that screen, the app mapped to that button will launch.  Even if I just tap the screen, or with n e button press at all - 5-way, hardkey, etc.  And this was after having done a hard reset and reinstall manually earlier (from backup, but apps only and redid all the prefs - I'm really havin some problems here, but thas another matter.  I NEED A FRIKKIN PC)

Not absolutely sure on this, but it appears to be an app conflict for me most likely since it is still happenin without interfering prefs.  I will TRY to test after hard reset later (though I am REALLY havin a lot of problems in restoration from backups - even just doing the backup itself.  I've narrowed down most of the problems, so I should be able to do it, but later.).  Thanks again though; holla

Try this:

Make a copy of your saved preferences file and move it to card for safe-keeping.  Then delete it from RAM, reconfigure KGT+ and see if it then works how you want it to.
