future of palm os

I love using palm os since it is really simple for a guy like me to use.  However, it seems that future treo's will no longer be using it.  My first questions is that is this true?  If this is true, can my applications that I have been using on the palm os be easily transferred to the windows based program?  thanks.

Yup, that's true. Palm OS is ancient to begin with, so that shouldn't have been a surprise.

Unfortunately, no. They are incompatible unless you run the StyleTap emulator. It's not a long term solution though, so you will wind up finding new apps.

Style Tap (2 words) is an application that runs Palm OS applications in an emulator type of environment - and it does a better job that the Palm OS! Much more stable. Almost every application you have in the POS world has a Winslow counterpart, though not all. Some Palm OS applications are better, some Winslow applications are better. The phone recording application is the only one I could not replace when I finally switched permanently to a Windows device.

The developers of the Palm Pre said that what they wanted to do was make it really easy for any web developers to create new applications for the new Web OS they're using, because they know how dedicated Palm users are and how they love their Palm OS programs. I was wondering that too but i'm not worried, there are so many developers out there.

OK I get the fact that Palm OS is old in computer years, and the new co. wants to make apps easier to write for. I mean that would make it better for us, the users would then get more.

So whats next? whats the next gen? And don't tell me Windows OS. I'm trying to root MS out of my life. Too many bugs, necc updates and hackers. Whats next after Palm?

No matter what you want to accept, a fact is a fact. It's either WM or BB, but BB OS isn't really an OS as it's Java-based.

In looking back over your previous posts to this topic, I realize that you said for BUSINESS smartphones. I don't use my smartphone for business. At least not business apps. I of course keep my bus calendar, and make business phone calls and track p/ws & expenses etc. but I really don't think of my phone as a business smart phone. My business doesn't require me to p/u emails on the go.

I use my smartphone for the above, + listening to radio & music, pictures of family & friends, listening to books & personal texts. For now I'm reasonably satisfied... Its just my gadget self that wants a new phone. I guess I'm going to have to wait for SOMEONE!

My Palm Treo 680 does all of this fine right now. The one app I wish I could have is to run POD casts, w/ video. That and thde fact I've had the phone for 2 years is the only reason I'd LIKE a new phone

Yup. For consumer smartphones, that area is just too crazy to tell. There's no clear winner...

Okay wait a sec ... nobody has mentioned Android, or OpenMoko, or Symbian? I mean sure, none of these will run on a Palm, but you can't say there's only Windows as an alternative.

Did anyone say that WM was the only OS? However, Android is too new to tell (but from the looks of it, it's shaping up to be just like the crapPhone), I've never even heard of OpenMoko, and Symbian isn't popular in the US.
