Hey Everyone,

So I'm sure by now a lot of you figured something was cooking in the BoraWare labs... In fact by now it's probably smelling a bit burnt, I apologize for that.  Today I am officially releasing KeySwitch version 1.0.  So what is KeySwitch you ask?  Well let me copy and paste what I already wrote on BoraWare.com:

KeySwitch is a basic key remapping utility which remaps keys on an app by app basis.  Simply choose the program whos keys you would like to remap then add any number of key swaps.  The best example of what to use KeySwitch for is the Capture application (Camera or Camcorder).  Simply adding the Capture application then remapping the side key to the 5-way center key allows you to take pictures using the side key (in addition to the center key still).  In fact, the Capture application is added to your list automatically if there are no other programs in the list.

This is only version 1.0.  I do have plans to add some additional features eventually, but at the current moment I have some other fish to fry (ptpChat 2 is starting to smell pretty ripe).  Give me some feedback on how it treats you.

Note: Using KeySwitch *will* cause a slight performance drop in the apps you use it with.  For simple apps like the Capture program it's not noticable at all.  In programs with heavy keyboard usage it will be noticable.  I have plans to eventually tweak the way things work to possibly decrease some of the performance issues.

Other Note:  The names of keys are limited to Centro, Treo 650, and Generic (which is basically just Centro).     If you'd like to add the key names for your device download the BoraWare KeyFinder utility.  You can then record the names of each of your hard keys and have them automatically emailed to BoraWare.

Not sure if anyone else is using this app or not yet - if not, then SHAME ON YOU ALL! Tongue

Seriously tho, Phil really has a winner here, even if only for using the app with the Camera - think about how much discussion there had been about the disappointment that TreoShutter didn't work on newer devices... now we have something that does!

Quick question/feature request, in case it's something you hadn't thought of already (since I know you potentially have a lot of ideas for this one Wink): since the app is titled "KeySwitch", is it possible for you to add ability to directly from the KeySwitch UI for the user to actually switch the default actions of all the hard keys. I mean essentially just incorporating (or linking) the Buttons settings in general preferences (although from your app possibly the Power, Home, and Phone keys could also be remapped - maybe even the menu key), but just thought it could be a nice idea to have it be able to affect the global settings as well as app-by-app.

I KNOW there have to be others using this app though, so how else have you been using your KeySwitch?

Hey Chuck,

Are you using any other programs that might hook the HEDE notification?  The reason I ask is because KeySwitch uses that notification to change key presses.  It only hooks it when you launch apps that use it (so as to not cause performance degredation system-wide).  If you have another app, such as Butler, that adds functionality like push-and-hold it may very well take priority to KeySwitch.  In my tests in a 700p simulator (MR and Non-MR) everything checked out accordingly.

Hmmm... ok - seems the hard/function keys work, but indeed the keyboard letters aren't. Tried simply disabling Butler, but saw no change. To note, I too am on a 700

Aiite.

What other apps are known to access HEDE?  I know of Butler and ShortCut5 (tested with both disabled though, and still with no success - I'll test on my clean 650 later just to see)

I have a treo 755p and I want to play an older Palm game. I want to make (phone hardkey to left 5way) and (calender hardkey to right 5way). This app doesnt seem to work at all for me. I used this software (palminternals) and I I don't think anything is blocking KeySwitch. Any one have any other ideas I can try??? Thanks

Which game is it that you're trying to remap?  One possible problem you could be having is if another program is mapping itself to the same key via the same method.  An example is that I have Initiate set to map itself to my home key (which uses the hede hook as well) so it overrides KeySwitch when pressing the home key.

I tried the game out and it seems it takes over the keys in a way different to most apps.  After loading the game I was in no way able to exit out without pulling the battery.  I even tried pushing and holding the side key (the old trick) and it didn't work.  I had my wife call me to see if that would push it out, I got the call screen, answered, and the game took over again so I was then in a call and the game.  What I'm basically saying is that I think the game takes over your device to an extent that 3rd party apps will have a difficult time interfacing with them.  Either way I'll do a few more tests to make sure there's really nothing KeySwitch can do for you.
