FYI...just went to download GoogleMaps from www.google.com/gmm and it automatically identified my Treo 680 as a Treo 680. Google Maps also works great on the 680. Glad to see they are on the ball  Smiley

Waiting on the copper to be delivered.  Just realized it comes a 1GB card from Palm.  Yay!! Question? Does it have the Kinoma player built in? Will I be able to stream video like on my Sprint 700p?

A great review, JAndrews!  Smiley

Have any of you reviewers tried any of these apps? Some of them are "hacks" that may break with a new phone. Other should work just fine I guess.

Looks like the Kinoma player files are in ROM. Do you have a URL for a video that works on the 700p that you'd like me to check on the 680?

Not a clue since I only have the Cingular-branded model. My guess is tha the unlocked version from Palm won't support any carrier-specfic features so you would have to wait until T-Mobile comes out with a 680, and even then it's not a sure thing.

It's the strangest darn thing.

On my Sprint Treo 700p I'm able to play the 3GP videos w/o any problems. I tap on the link, it opens up Kinoma, says Connecting, lists the video name on the right, starts buffering, reaches 100% full bufer and then starts playing.

On the Cingular Treo 680, I tap on the link, it opens up Kinoma, says Connecting, lists the video name on the right, starts buffering, but stays at 0% buffer until it eventually says "connectino closed".

It is possible that the problem with the 680 is due to it being an evaluation unit with a SIM card that was provided with the Treo and they may not have provisioned all data services. I did run into something else that indicated the Cingular account they let me use may have some limitations because when I launched the SIM Services program it said SIM Services were unavailable. But I'm not really sure that is relevant in this case.

I'm willing to try something else if you have any ideas.

Thanks for the postive feedback! It's nice to know that I was able to provide the information that people were looking for.

Regarding the apps you listed above, I've tried a few of them so far:

BackupBuddy VFS (v4.0.1) - I have performed backups w/o any problems. I haven't done a full restore but I did restore an app (over a copy that still existed in internal memory) without any problems.

zLauncher (v5.42b4) - I just installed it and it seems to work OK. I use this as my main launcher on my 700p and had already downloaded 5.42b4 which addressed the probelms with the Home key that intially existed on the 700p. However, I am also using LudusP on my 700p to remap my hard keys to my preferences.

LudusP (v1.9) - Seems to work so far.

KeyCaps600 - Seems to still work.

I have a unlocked 650, which I bought from Palm.  At first I manually set up the T-Zones, then when I bought full internet access, T-Mobile sent me an SMS, which set up network selections.
I suspect you can just call then and they will send you the SMS.
You can always set up the proxy yourself (write it down now, it took me awhile to find:)

NO 3G!!!  I can't belive it's not 3G yet!  I haven't seen anything that makes me want to upgrade (downgrade?) from the 650 to the 680...   OK, maybe one thing:  the 680 fits in the smallest Pelican case, but that's not reason enough.

Is there a good argument out there for moving to the 680 from the 650?  The 650 is pretty fast on the EDGE network.

Hi,

Thanks for the great review - I feel like I've almost had the device in my  hand!  Grin

One question: does the documentation indicate what the SAR value of the 680 is? I am wondering whether there is any downside to the loss of the antenna (and the treo 650 had a really high SAR value as I recall!)

Does the Treo 680 do audio or video streaming?
The publicity seems to imply it can with Windows Media Player 10 installed. Can you confirm this? I use a Treo 650 and this seems to me to be the only capability it lacks (I don't see the point of WiFi on this kind of device). I use my PC to listen to the BBC which uses Real Player format, either integrated or stand alone. When I try to do the same thing with my Treo it tells me that I don't have the Real Player plugin installed (although I do have the Real Player installed on the Treo). Sites like www.clivejames.com use Windows Media Player format, but when I try to play an audio file nothing happens at all as, of course, I don't have Windows Media Player installed on the Palm. Podcasting direct to the Treo doesn't work either, I assume because there is no software on the Palm capable of receiving the Podcast.

I am surprised that nobody seems to have brought this up. Am I missing something?
