I just got a treo 600 and talked with TMO CS. They advise I need to sign up for their unlimited internet access plan ($19.95/month) in order to have pop3 email access.

With my nokia 6820, which TMO does not support (but through the help of many of you at howard forums), figured out with the free wap access under my $39.99 calling plan, can in fact access at least one pop3 account (still trying to figure out how to access multiple accounts - if any has suggestion, let me know).

Back to main question -- do I in fact have to pay extra to get emails on the Treo 600? I can't see to find treo 600 supported by the TMO configurator site or on the palmone.com sites.

Thanks Smiley

If you been following threads on howardforums then you know that what the CS told you is true - POP3 access is only open on the $19.99 plan. If you pay that, then TMo will be obligated to help you setup the mail configuration, even for a Treo600.

If you can live without POP3, then just set up you Treo with either $4. 99 T-Zones - which is what I did - or free WAP, and log into your mail accounts via Internet access.

To be pre-emptive to all readers, do NOT start asking how to setup free WAP. Search the threads either in this site or howardforums for more details. (Hint: 50% chance that it will NOT work where you live in the US)

I actually spent another 20 minutes with TMO CS on Sunday morning. I have wap access (free with my calling plan) via my nokia 6820 and can download pop3 email (one account only and not multiple accounts) free via wap. It works just fine and I can even send MMS free via free wap.

Treo 600 does not work with free wap...in fact according to them, can't even set up wap on the Treo 600....does that make sense to you (yes, i saw your DO NOT alert above  yes) , and CS said would work only with t-zones and/or unlimited internet access plan.

Unless she's wrong, that means for now the Treo 600 given to me will remain an expensive pda and will rely on the nokia 6820 for emails...at some point will have to consider the $19.95 unlimited internet access plan bigcry

19.95 DATA is actually really affortable, i'd go for it if i were you.

but yes the Treo 600 can be setup to use WAP, the same way you configure it to use DATA

just need to know the server name you are connecting to.

is actually called the "APN" name

wap ones usually start with: WAP.providername.com
data ones usually goes with: INTERNET.providername.com

OK, now I'm thoroughly confused Smiley
TMO CS says can't set up wap for Treo 600.  You offer a solution above...can you walk a newbie through the exact steps.  I went thru the Treo 600 manual, bought a how to book via amazon (not much help) and searched through a variety of forums (howard forum, info scoop, etc) and couldn't find anything.

Many thanks.

like i said, you need to first find out the APN name for the WAP server.

but that will limit your software Drastically, since WAP will not offer TCP/IP
only data session will, and most of the software for internet use, in the Treo requires TCP/IP and not WAP.

so that is why it will usually not work, except Web browsing.

now in contrast you can have plain Data session no WAP, and still use WAP, but who would want WAP , when they can have full internet?  Smiley

Okay, newbie question on the same topic.  I have T-Mobile unlimited internet (I'm assuming this is the same one where you have access in the HotSpots).  When I go into Network Preferences I have T-Zones, T-Mobile Internet, and T-Mobile VPN  show up in the Services.  However, when I use T-Mobile Internet, I get an error that GPRS connection is not available, check your network settings, etc.
So can I assume this is more of a coverage error, in that the service isn't available where I'm trying it?  Or is there something else I need to do?  I can't really modify anything on the screen because it's locked.

Thanks.....

I can't answer your question but I certainly can add more confusion to this dialogue.  You all saw my earlier postings above, right?  Well let me know amend as follows:

I have the $39.99 calling plan that comes with free wap.  TMO CS swears free wap won't work on Treo 600 (from 3 different Tier 1 email specialists at CS).  They also don't support the Nokia 6820 but somehow I got the wap settings for 6820 via Nokia site.

Sidebar....i set up pop3 email account on Nokia 6820 using gprs settings downloaded from Nokia site and it works!  I can retrieve AND send email out. Have contacted Nokia support to set up multiple pop3 email...but let me come back to Treo 600.

Last night I wouldn't take 'No' for an answer so tried to set up pop3 email on the Treo 600.  Well, good news and bad news.  First, I have it set to T-zones.  It will receive email from my cable modem account but can't send out.  A second pop3 email account won't work at all, no matter how I configure....which is very weird because it is the same exact account that works on the Nokia 6820 described above???? :-/

I can't connect with T-Mobile Internet or T-Mobile VPN....and I am confused as to why I can connect with T-Zones because I have not subscribed to T-Zones or T-Zones Pro (maybe I'll get a surprise next billing that says I am?). I am assuming for now it's free wap that is giving me my connection on the Treo 600.

Now, the PUNCHLINE: with free wap (or T-Zones??) on the Treo 600, I can full internet access via the default application -web blazer browser.  YES, you heard me right, I can access the web...I have logged on to hotmail, yahoo mail, a couple of my pop3 email accounts using their webmail sites, checked sports, weather, you get the message yes

So maybe you can try T-zones and see what happens....if it works, drop the $19.95 plan!

For me, I've not given up on sending email on the first pop3 email account, nor given up to set up the second account.....anyone with suggestions, jump in.

No, I have T-Zones as well, and that works fine.  I just want to get the T-Mobile Internet to work too (if it can).  I need both for different reasons.

btw, if you set it to T-zones, can you access pop 3 email and also surf the net as I described earlier?

Yes, you need to enable your GPRS data package service, can only be done by calling Customer Service, and add it to your plan.

I'd be interested in your comments to my posting of today re what has happened this past evening....with free wap (or T-zones) on the Treo 600 I appear to have full internet access yet pop3 email is fully operational (can retrieve but not send out) ??

Okay, so it is a different package than the 19.95 unlimited Internet.
