Your laptop would not be needed for this, only your Treo.  It really is easy!!!

Yes, BUT!!! as Discussed in this thread

It's sorta like going from Windows 98 to Windows XP, you get the UPGRADE, but it's a completely different operating system with different partition requirements.  Therefore the upgrade overwrite the current customized ROM

Regardless of what you have/had in ROM before the new ROM update, it will all be wiped clean and replaced by the ROM updater say to 1.25 for example, and it will not keep any Custom things that you had already in ROM.

Then all you have to do is basically delete the same files you did before.  This sounds like a lot of work, but, let's consider:

Well as I said before I have I have Firmware: 01.71 Software: Treo 650 - 1.20 LAP I had bought it second hand. After doing the steps mentioned in jamesgangut - StepbyStep RomTool.pdf and when I run the Rom Tool app I get the mssg "Waiting for phone" I live in India. I also found that the earlier version must have been Version and then unlocked for sale in India.

How do I go ahead??

I think I m missing something. In device manager also I see HTC USB SYNC.

Waiting anxiously for reply.

Not sure if this has been stated anywhere... the ROM Tool will not read the phone info if you have enabled Security on your Treo.  I had to unassign the password first before going into the bootloader stage.

Couple more questions for you:

Are you trying to connect thru a USB Hub by chance, or are you connected directly thru a USB Port on your PC?

If so, then you might try connecting thru a direct USB Port on you  PC, if not

or are you getting to this Point?

If this, then you possibly have a loose connection between your Sync Cable and the phone.  There have been report of users having to "connect the HotSync Cable multiple times", one user reported, he had "to jam the cable into the phone 6 or 7 times to get a good connection".  Others have reported connection problems using "after market HotSync Cables."   Another reported that he had to wrap a rubber band around the phone to hold the cable in.

With there being at least 7 contact points for the cable connection, 5 of them exerting pressure outward on the cable and only 2 holding the cable in, the pressure is greater to disconnect than hold.  This is a a known issue with some aftermarket connections.

Let us know!

Yes I am still at the "Rainbow" bootloader screen and get the above message on my PC. I am connecting directly to the USB port and I did try to disconnect and connect a couple of times. But as suggested by you I will try some more time. Yes I had to try with the "after market HotSync Cable" as the one I got with my second hand phone does not have HotSync Button.

So there is nothing else I am missing?

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Can you paste the output of the bootloader log from the debugging tab here?  That might give us some more information.

The HotSync cable was the problem. after removing and attaching it a couple of times I was able to detect the phone and am now downloading the ROM to my PC. Hope all goes well. I am using World Mate Standard edition, is it safe to remove the World Clock application? I will also be using Agendus for Palm OS, is also safe to remove To Do appl. ?

Thanks for your support.

Glad to hear you have it working.

I removed the World Clock, DateBook, ToDo,  and Scientific Calculator also (Replaced calculator with SnapCalc).  I use Beyond Contacts, so needed none of these apps.  If you find you need them for Agendus, you can always add them back in.

If I have access to a PC but don't use it as my regular hotsync system, can I do this, then go back to using my mac for the hotsync?  Any issues there?  Thanks - I really want to do this.

I still have problem with the cable. After resetting and getting the bootloader again the Rom Tool cannot find my phone. I tried with 2 cables same result.

What is the method for adding more apps to the ROM. Do we copy the .prc file in this folder where we delete the other apps? I use Agendus Pro 10, Treo Area Codes, World Mate Standard edition, change me, etc wherein Agendus and TAc occupy the most space.

I know absolutely nothing about MAC.  I can tell you that download and uploading the ROM has nothing to do with the HotSync, it just uses the cable.  The drivers that come with the download provide a direct connection to the Treo, adding it as a new device.

I still have problem with the cable. After resetting and getting the bootloader again the Rom Tool cannot find my phone. I tried with 2 cables same result.

If you got it working once with the cable by working with it, I'm still betting it's a connection problem, BUT as mmastrac suggested: Can you paste the output of the bootloader log from the debugging tab here?  That might give us some more information.

Yep, you just copy the files you want to add into the same folder where you deleted files from.  Don't think that I would put large programs in the ROM.  Did you think about adding FAT32, while you're building the ROM?

Hey Hpspringer - that's great news!  I thought I'd read somewhere about hotsync and stuff but it seems no worries just use the cable and my spare PC with XP...awesome thanks!
