Thanks for your words, bdh18, but I think we should all acknowledge the authors of the thread I read at T|C and the developers of this powerful (but rather obscure, to me) piece of software which is dbscan!

Also, many thanks to DickieD, and my apologies for not have noted that post: there are so many complaints on hotsync that probably I missed something!

Try this advise I received from Chapura:

In Outlook go to the Calendar folder and select View, Current View, By
category. (If you are using Outlook 2003, Select View, Arrange By,
current view, by category).
 
From the by category view, sort by subject

This will usually put the 'blank' calendar items at the top.

Delete the blank item(s), Also if you have any items that have funny
characters, You will need to delete them and sync again.

If this does not work, try this:
Backup your Treo onto your expansion card using BackupBuddy VFS (Pro)
Hard reset your Treo
Restore everything except for the 2 Calendar files
Set Calendar in Hotsync to Desktop overrides Handheld (to restore your Calendar items to your Treo)

Is outlook connected to exchange server? If so, synch offline.

It's a bummer that Palm created confusion leading to problems like this by taking:

Datebook <=> Calendar
Address <=> Contacts
ToDo <=> Tasks
Memos <=> MemoPad

Turns out, I had a similar problem, and I had upgraded, keeping my old addresses.  I had the LONG hotsyncs and everything too.  Turns out that I got that funky duplicate bug, and ONE single address got corrupted, and caused the whole thing.  Even dbScan couldn't fix it, but I was able to use an older address book listing and imported it into a (yet another) new "clean" installation.  Even the directions to beam the old to the new didn't work.
