I'm afraid I didn't even know there was a portable edition!
could you point me to it?
You could try the manual instructions - they will at least let you see what parts of vlc you need to work with and see if they are supported in the portable edition.

Doc's link missing : link is http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/vlc_portableJohnhaller's Portable apps wraps the program (In this case VLC) in a psuedo installer, it re-routes Both appdata and registry entries and/or cuases them to be removed when the program closes. In the Case of VLC I believe it reroutes, though I don't use haller's VLC. I could try it if CV wants though. (I do use other products by him: ClamWin, Firefox, 7Zip, GoogleChrome) One can also, though not as cleanly, use VLC as a portable app on it's own. This method is laid out at http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?q=vlcwith the ZIP file version being http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

sounds like it is just vlc running, so I'd have a look at the manual instructions and you'll see what you have to update there.
You'll just have to find the equivalent files to change in the portable version.

you're on your own there I'm afraid. There are pretty detailed manual instructions to make VLC work. Hopefully you can use your knowledge of what VLC portable is to apply them there.

VC what is the Helper looking for specifically on the machine? a certain reg entry? a ceretain file in a certain place (i.e. %appdata%\vlc\file.ext)
is it C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\http\.hosts if so could you, within the helper program, set a enviromental variable %vlcdirectory% (defaulted as %program files%\VideoLan\VLC\ and then allow the user to set that (in maybe an ini file or reg entry). That way it'll look for %vlcdirectory%\http\.hosts which both versions I link above use. PortableApps.com version = %driveletter%\VLCPortable\App\vlc\http\ VideoLan Zipped VLC version = \vlc-1.0.3\http\
simon are you using portableapps.com version or the second way I linked?

on the mac helper, you can just pick the version of vlc that you want to adjust.
on windows I'm actually not sure what is used to find the app.
The thing is, this is an extremely unusual case (the only one I have heard of) - so it seems reasonable to just follow the manual instructions rather than rebuilding the setup helper to accomodate it.
