Also a quick question- does windows 7 have the ability under administration to 'run program as xp'? 

Brilliant! 

I right-clicked on Palm desktop and selected "troubleshoot compatibility".  Windows 7 then had a think and recommended "XP SP-2 mode" and asked me to start it under these conditions.  It worked fine !!! ..and then Windows 7 saved those conditions so now it automatically starts as "XP SP-2" when I run it.

Based on this would it work on vista 64 with a cable if you ran the app as xp?  Seems to me that should work.  Maybe not though drivers dual core and bluetooth and all that is in the mix.

I should ask if you are running windows 7 on a 64 bit or a 32 bit unit?   This might help many others

So in summary

vista and windows 7 run as xp for 32 bit.   

running palm apps as xp  on a 64 bit is as yet unknown to its outcome.  Hey robin and midojo how about it test it out?  or have you already?

Ah, now I think I've finally pieced it altogether thanks.  I should not be confused again, as I often keep an old computer unit working and the biggest problem there is the drivers as well.
