I love myTreo! But sometimes I hate it too!

« on: 25 July 2009, 12:19:21 »

oK, I've used a palm device forever, and somehow about every other year, I have something I can't conquer.  I can't sync my phone to computer.  I link it all up then hit the hotsync button it starts and then I get the error "unable to initiate hotsync operation due to system error"   There has got to be a great geek that knows what this means and how to fix it.  Please respond either to the board or to me at{EMAIL Removed to protect poster and Forum from Spammer} as this needs help and has been going on for at least a week.  I can't take much more of this.  Please don't tell me to download new software as I only have DIAL UP and it takes about a day to do that.  If you want me to do that and have broadband or DSL and can cut me a CD for it, great....

Let me know.

Hi Sue, I removed your email address because we have a large spam problem.

Quote
"unable to initiate hotsync operation due to system error"

I assume it says this on the device, not on the Computer.  I also assume that a soft reset does not fix this.  Am I correct so far?  How about a reboot of the machine?

Are you using Windows XP or Vista?
if so right click "My Computer" and choose Manage
Go to device Manger
Plug your Device into the hotsync cable.  Do you see "palm Device" listed?

I get the same error after the phone tries to sync for a minute using the cradle/cable. It specifically says, 'the connection b/w your handheld computer & the desktop could not be established. please check your setup & try again. I have hotsynced it before (last month).

I do see that it says palm os handheld devices under the manage in 'my computer' when connected.

If you synced before, try fixing the databases. Open PalmDesktop, Menu, Tools, Options, Tools, Check and repair damaged databases (or similar), Check now. After it finishes, try to HotSync.

The best option would be to make the data from the desktop to update the one in the phone, as it was fixed (if it was corrupted), to do so, go to HotSync Manager in the PC system tray, in Custom, go to each conduit: Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Notes change them to "Desktop overwrites Handheld".

If you can install apps (or get it sent by BT or IR), you can try installing DBFixit, run it, it should correct corrupted databases, then sync.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

if it sees it as a palm device
the next thing is to see if hotsync is running on the PC
in the lower right corner of the start bar (the notification area) do you see the hotsync icon? (if using xp, vista, win7 you may need to expand the notification area)
if you do see it, can you open it? (double or right click the hotsync icon)
have you already tried soft resetting the phone?

There were no corrupt files found.

As far as seeing the icon in the notification area, I do not see the icon when trying to sync. Is soft resetting just turning the phone off and taking out the battery?

Hotsync program is not running if you don't see the hotsync icon in the notification area
You need to start the hotsync program on the PC
soft reset is just taking the battery out
