This guide is intended to be used to install everything necessary for Opera Mini over the air to your device so the links contained within this guide are all mobile links.

1. Go to the link below and select the Java 572+hack install.prc    There are several other versions of the installer listed. The one I listed has a hack to disable verification before Opera Mini connects to the internet. It is something you are going to want eventually so you might as well start with it.
http://www.wegzumselbst.de/

2. Save and open the file you download.

3. When downloading is complete you should see JavaNutshellInstaller in your applications launcher. Launch this and in should install the Java Virtual Machine on your device.

4. Open Preferences. If installed correctly you should have 3 new prefernce panels under the Other section. Select IBM Java VM

5. In this Preference Panel set maximum memory to 4mb and set Maximum Java Thread Stack Size to 32kb

6. Now click on the link below and download the prc file of Opera Mini
http://mini.opera.com/global/opera-mini-4.1.10781-advanced-int.prc

7. Opera Mini should now appear in your application launcher. Launch Opera Mini and it should install and then you should be surfing the web with Opera Mini

Please note that support for the Java Virtual Machine was withdrawn by Palm because of its bugginess. While running Opera Mini you will expierence occasional freezes that require you to remove the battery from your device to restart it. If these freezes are very frequent you can try going back to the IBM Java VM preference panel and increasing the maximum memory to 8mb.

Information for this guide was collected for many posts in these forums. Much of the information came from users chckbrt, Dickie D, and sfhub

(Edited to include Java Nutshell Installer with hack and to link to a 4.1 version of Opera rather than a 4.2)

I got bored today so I decided to take another shot at running Opera Mini on my Centro. As it became very frustrating bouncing between different threads for the informations I needed and since we get asked this question a lot I decided to write this step by step on how to do it.

Please feel free to chime in on anything I was unclear about or just plain got wrong and I will edit it as needed.

For the record Opera Mini is now running pretty well on my Centro.

What version of JVM is the most stable? I'm using 4.1178 (I think) on the recommendation of sfhub and it seems more stable. Is this the consensus pick?

Hey Paul......

That's a Opera Mini type  number, not JVM.

The most stable Opera Mini version is 4.1.10781 Beta. I've been using this version exclusively......

4.1178 is 4.1.10781 from my bad memory.
I'll go ahead and switch the link in the guide to link to that version. I think I'm going to change the nutshell installer to the on with the mod to skip the confirmation.

You should definitely try FontSmoother.  In addition to making your Palm look modern, it'll let you choose small fonts that are still readable for Opera to use.  Makes the page layout much nicer.

I might as well dump the post on the other thread here so people can benefit.

==

In case these are hard to find:

Step 1
======

PalmOS Java VM 5.7.2
  http://mytreo.net/downloads/ibm-websphere-everyplace-java-virtual-machine,1313.html
Direct link
  http://mytreo.net/downloads/file-1313-1.html

Install following files only for minimal install
  [JVM/ARM4T]
    J9JavaVMMidp20.prc
    JavaVMCheck_enUS.prc

Optional files to enable file uploading
  [JVM/ARM4T]
    J9pref.prc
  [JSR75]
    fileconnect.prc
    pimop.prc
    PIMPrefs.prc

After install
Home->Prefs->Other->IBM Java VM
  [Global preferences]
  [checked] Use Double Buffering
  [checked] Use high resolution coordinates

  Set Memory Maximum [4Mb]
  Set Maximum Java Thread Stack Size [32Kb]

Click [Done]

==

Step 2
======

Opera Mini all betas including 4.1.10781
  http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=221224
Direct link
  http://mini.opera.com/global/opera-mini-4.1.10781-advanced-int.prc

Install
  opera-mini-4.1.10781-advanced-int.prc

Run Opera Mini and configure as appropriate
  Menu->Tools->Settings

I like to set
  Image quality: [Medium]
  Font size: [Medium]

  [unchecked] Mobile View
    [checked] Visual effects
    [checked] Show overview
    [checked] Direct address input
    [checked] 24-hour clock

==

Step 3 (optional - recommended)
======
j9secpol - Java Security Policy update to stop Opera Mini from
asking you about network and filesystem permissions
  http://www.wegzumselbst.de/
Direct link
  http://www.wegzumselbst.de/dat/j9secpol_fileconnect.zip

Install
  j9secpol_fileconnect.prc

Install this *after* you install the Java VM (and possibly after Opera Mini as well),
not at the same time. It modifies the security policy for the installed apps which might
not happen correctly if you install at the same time (chicken/egg).

==

Step 4 (optional - highly recommended)
======
Installing FontSmoother for clean antialiased fonts makes a huge
difference for page layout.  This was a big complaint I had with
Centro browsers, that the pages didn't look right.

As a bonus this makes your overall Centro look modern instead of
outdated with the crayon bitmap fonts

You can get an idea what the page layout difference looks like here:
http://www.palminfocenter.com/news/7769/five-tips-to-improve-the-palm-blazer-browser/

You would be surprised what a big difference nice antialiased fonts
will do towards making your Centro look modern.  Highly recommended.

FontSmoother 2.40
  http://www.zlthemes.com/ProductDetailListing.php?PID=79
Direct link
  http://www.zlthemes.com/ProductDownloadDemo.php?PID=79
Tahoma Font
  http://www.palminfocenter.com/images/tahoma_fonts.zip
NimbusSans Font
  http://pruss.mobi/dl/urwFontsfontsos.zip

Install
  FontSmoother-Installer.prc
  Tahoma F5 8pt.prc
  FontSubst-NimbusSans-15-ker.prc

Blazer, Opera
  Tahoma 8pt

System Font
  NimbusSans 15 aa ker

General Hints
=============
Always let opera finish rendering the page (status bar at bottom + all images loaded on page) before you try scrolling or interacting with the page.  This increases stability a lot.

Learn the keyboard shortcuts, they make navigating much quicker.

Backspace - Zoom Out/Previous Page
Enter - Accept text (good for entering URL)

D-Pad
  Arrows - Small Scroll Up/Left/Right/Down
  Select - Zoom in/Select URL

Option,Option - num lock, good for locking number pad in # mode for scrolling operations

2 - Large Scroll Up
4 - Large Scroll Left
6 - Large Scroll Right
8 - Large Scroll Down
5 - Zoom in/out

1 - Actions
    Switch to mobile view
    Reload
    Information
    Open Image

0 - Hide focus box/pointer

#,1 Enter address
#,2 Bookmarks
#,3 Jump to start of main content, or beginning and end of page
#,4 Start page

There definitely needs to be something about Henk's OFE in this thread. And possibly more tips/tricks on getting the most/best usage out of it aside from the settings above and things like letting the whole page load (such as how it IS possible to copy&paste by activating and using the internal keyboard - press "alt" in any field if, provided the right versions are installed - etc.)

But +1 4 U Paul

Hey.....

Might as well sticky this in the Centro, 755, 700p, 680, and 650 forums too.

The peeps that post the Java and Opera Mini questions in the above mentioned forums, won't look for, or find this thread in this forum......

I was thinking I should just set up a PowerDict shortcut with the url of this thread, that way I can just type a short word (such as 'groan' Roll Eyes ) and it will automagically be changed to the link.  That way I can be helpful and exercise my frustrations.  yes
