Why I hope Verizon Waits for second Generation WebOS devices instead of getting The Pre

1) 4G LTE infrastructure:  Currently the 3G speed of Verizon's network are admirable for the Treo/Centro line.  However with the WebOS synergy and uber-push technologies I'd much rather have the 60 Mbps, as reported on the pre-announcement announcement on April 17th 2009

2) Bluetooth 3.0: We all know that a file transfer with our current Bluetooth (2.0) radios is slow like molasses is thick.  Bluetooth 3.0 will reportedly give us 8xs the speed (24Mbps as opposed to 3Mbps) This is a must if this'll be the major way I (who doesn't use Facebook, Exchange or Google) will be syncing my information to my computer

3) More APPS.  Look I'm so excited to see what the Pre has to offer, I'm even more excited to see what the huge developer community can bring to WebOS that isn't already there.  I'm QUITE outspoken in my belief that what makes the Treo/Centro/PalmOS Lines sooooooo good is not the device or it's included software but the wonderful variety of software that has come out in the last ~10 Years that allows every device to be different and for a device to be ever changing.  I have a co-worker who has a Centro , he's not added anything on to it, when I look at it and (mentally) compare it to mine, I have no idea how I'd ever use his (he doesn't even have fieldplus goofy )

4) Less initial Firmware updates.  With the Pre I'm expecting many Firmware updates as Palm starts to see that "oh snap, you mean not everyone uses Google/exchange/facebook" and "Wait, people use 3 different GTalk accounts and 5 Twitters." A newer device will already include these updates to the OS.

OK I think that's all for now.  Feelings? Discussion? Arguments?

To be honest I think a lot of your points are valid about why a 2nd generation WebOS device will be better than a Pre.

However, it might take 12 months for the first true 2nd generation Web OS devices to appear. During this time I'd like a Pre because;

- I'm getting bored of my 680 and want a new toy
- The pre looks as good as or better than most other smartphones in terms of functionality.
- Palm Inc. are in serious financial difficulty, if everyone waits for Pre V2 the company will probably fold before it gets to release it. I like Palm's products and will happily support the company.

Best.  Reason.  Ever.

A similar argument can be made for the software landscape...   if every waits for the v2 where's the market for anyone to develop "More APPS" in the meantime?

Yeah I sometime forget that I have fieldplus it seems so integral to my device Smiley
Back on topic:
Don't get me wrong, if verizon does get the Pre (and no other webOS have been announced) I'll still get it, I just kinda (am starting to) hope that they don't get the Pre and do get Gen 2 instead. But those things listed are things not announced for the Pre and that would make the WebOS much more friendly

You guys can see forest...I like your "big picture thinking"  I have a great "legacy" plan with AT&T and I could be real happy with my Centro while waiting for a GSM Pre or 2nd generation WebOs device, but I'm 99% sure I'm going to switch to Sprint and get in on the cutting (bleeding) edge of this.  I have too many CryPhones being waved in my face lately...I've had it! starwars

I hope Verizon gets the Pre right away. That way wheb the next gen devices come out the Pre will go on sale and I'll actually be able to afford it!

... Currently the 3G speed of Verizon's network are admirable for the Treo/Centro line. ... .
I don't think any Centro is capable of 3G.  It's something about Palm/Garnet OS not being able to switch back and forth between 2G and 3G radios on the fly.

I will be getting the Pre for all the above stated reasons: New Toy, Support the Company, Establish the User Base, etc.

I'm expecting the internet speed to be about even.  Blazer is good for mobile sites and my Centro, even with FieldPlus and everything else I have in there (I SO can't just hand my phone to someone to make a quick call), is never too slow.  Full websites, of course, take time.

With the Pre's better browser, rendering full web pages, and Sprint's 3G I don't expect it to be any different, really.  I'd love to be suprised, but that's where my expectations are.

Here's an outside hope I have: Since Sprint's promoting the Pre along with their new, upcoming 4G network, I'm hoping the Pre will either actually be a 4G device, or at least be upgradable to 4G when it comes out.  Could that, and other goodies, by why we haven't seen it pass through the FCC yet?  For a device that's coming out within the next two months-ish, that's cutting it a bit close, isn't it?

As far as what the next device will be, I'm betting it's that Centro 2 rumor from a while back, but I bet it'll have a sliding, horizontal QWERTY aimed at texters.

Ehhh, I don't think they are "real" 3G devices. Palm OS can't handle simultaneous data and voice, which is what I think 3G is.

They are likely EV-DO Rev 0 Vs. Rev A devices, not that I have any real idea what the difference, besides speed, is.

But Google showed me various credible-enough sources to say that they are 3G "something," like how the Centro was stripped of its 3G abilities when it went to AT&T.
