I love myTreo!

« on: 04 June 2008, 09:05:36 »

I've been using Palm products since the very first Palm was released.   I was one of those gadget guys that ALWAYS had to rush out and buy the newest Palm device.   I would estimate I've spent in the neighboorhood of $12,000 as a Palm loyalist.   That ended last week when I finally gave up on Palm.

This is why..

My latest Palm 755p which replaced the 700p which replaced every prior generation were all buggy from the day out of the box.

We all no the problems...  Resets, painful slow keypad inputs, digitizer issues, phone freezing with an incoming call and more.

My reasons for leaving include all the above.   I mean should not a phone at least deliver a call to someone without freezing.   My biggest reason for leaving is however twofold.

1.   I'm sick and tired of techweenies on the support side at Palm and Verizon telling me to do a hard reset everytime I call with a problem.  Message  to Palm and Verizon, EVEN with nothing other then your stock software, the same damn problems exist.   It's like I'm running versions 1 of Window all over again.  Just restart your computer and everything will come back on...
2.  I'm now convinced that the company I loved ever since it's innovation days is gone forever.  They are now controlled by people who don't care about quality.  Just push out that hardware, ready or not.   That is sometimes the pitfall of being a public company.  They weigh the pros and cons of releasing products that simply are not ready to meet sales expectations of the street.

The good news in all of this is that Verizon has done the right thing.  Not without some prodding and tenacity on my part but the right thing nonetheless.   They upgraded for me free of charge from the 600 all the way to the 755p free of charge each time.  At last count I had received 16 phones from Verizon in trying to get one to work as any phone should work.   The last staw came two weeks ago when my brother was in the hospital.  I go to answer the phone seeing it's the hospital and the damn phone froze.  I'm driving trying to take out the batter to reset the phone again and just said, enough is enough.   I called Verizon the next day and they sent me a new Blackberry Curve.   It's taken a week or so to get used to this device but it's superb and it's never offered even a hint of a reset or slowdown.

I'm going to miss all my old Palm programs, coming onto this board and reading about new fixes, releases, outstanding freeware and even the posts about all the problems.   Palm, you had me at hello but now it's goodbye forever...

Have Treos....Will Travel

OK....ba bye....

The problems you describe are primarily Verizon issues eg: Verizon firmware.

I have a Sprint 700p and a Centro and never had the problems you mention.

I use both devices all over the US as a over-the-road trucker.

My 700p is over 2 years old (purchased 05/28/06) and it's still working exceptionally well. No plans to replace it anytime soon.

Nickal.  I'm with you.  I've had enough.  My Sprint 700P doesn't freeze when I get a call  It resets!!  I guess I'm a little ahead of you at least I don't have to remove the battery cover!!

I was a Palm loyalist, I've owned at least a dozen different devices - the best one?  The 505, hands down.  No color screen but simply rock solid in an incredible form factor.  Too bad that I'll not see Nova or the 800W.  I can't stand it any longer.

Feel I'm going down the same path.. it's the small stuff that adds up.
PQA  proxies turned off with warning.
 Lack of decent Java Support
 Lack of wifi
Lack of upgrades (OS.. they always seem to have new hardware)
Removal of voice dialing (used voice dialing on my palm based phones up to my i330)
 FrankenGarnet staleness
 Siding with Carriers over consumers

Don't know what I'm going to switch to .. hoping Android with a Garnet Emulator. Have seen the linux Palm OS emulator already ported once to an Android & Nokia. So I figure it's just a question of choosing the correct hardware.

I too, am leaving Palm. Although, for none of the reasons stated above, I'm sure my reasons are pathetic and childish to you all, but my 700WX and my Centro have been mostly good phones, with excellent hardware and functionality. They have synced well and performed well with my Apple products. It is time for me to leave and switch to a phone and platform that I think will serve me better than Palm has ever done. I just ordered a Blackberry Curve 8330 from Sprint for $106 with taxes, and I'm confident I will never need to look back to the days of my Palm device. Goodbye MTD forums, albeit I haven't been around much. This place has answered many questions I've had about my phone and the platform.

« Reply #5 on: 09 November 2008, 23:11:35 »

welp everyone, im finally posting after a massive absence. Sorry to say its in the "i've jumped ship" thread.

I have recently purchsed and fell in love with my brand spanking new BlackBerry Curve 8330 on sprint. its got a slim form factor, sexy red housing, 1gb card included although i promptly purchased an 8gb sdhc microSD which it supports out of the box. it has GPS, Docs to Go standard edition, and free tethering right out of the box(windows dial-up networking dialing #777). not to mention very easy email integration and a large array of business/personal productivity apps that add an incredible level of convenience (see PageOnce app that houses all online accounts in one online account accessed by a single app on the device). also, msn, yahoo, google, and blackberry messengers for free. i dont like the the texting app though. Palm has a threaded chat log where this lists each message, you can hide the sent messages if you want though. and its plenty thin opposed to the treo 755 which makes the pocket a bit lighter. less is more. no native html email yet on mine but i dont think snapper had that either in the version on my treo. biggest thing, its not buggy yet and i didnt have to add a ton of crap for some awesome features out of the box, like mp3 ringers or gps. i almost forgot to mention a regular sized headphones jack instead of the treos small jack.

but that's all i got for now and probably for a while. im going to take up reading www.crackberry.com's forums for obvious reasons.

I haven't been here in quite awhile, and with good reason. I love the site, and I loved learning everything I could about my 600, then my 650, but after that I kept hoping for something better. Instead, every single phone Palm has put out has looked the same (albeit with a few slight changes) and nothing new. I see an iPhone and it has a huge screen and I wonder why Palm couldn't have done that? Why couldn't they make something cool and make my all in one device even better? Palm lost their desire to innovate and move on, and have been surpassed by so many others that it is a wonder they still are around. Don't get me wrong, I loved em long and hard, but they didn't do enough. Engadget told em exactly what they needed to do, and when they finally get around to doing some of it, it's far too late. Just look at what else there is! The Omnia, the Xperia, the N97, heck, even the Fuze looks to be a better bet than what Palm is offering. I love you Treo, and I always will, but any of the phones I have mentioned look to be a little better at being that dream all in one device. And while they all may be buggy or have issues, there are just as many sites out there for them as there are for the Treo.

To everyone here, you have been more than awesome, and sooo incredibly helpful, but it's time for something new.

My Husband Hates the software on this phone

« Reply #7 on: 15 December 2008, 14:50:52 »

My husbands Treo 750 has been the biggest frustration of all his Treo's . That is because Windows Mobile is on it and it is the worst software ever. He has daily frustrations and problems with it. So he will be probably saying goodbye to Treo also. Hello iPhone 3G. Very easy to use. It is a shame that Palm Treo 750 from AT&T went in with Windows Mobile. Its crap software. I swear the poor guy is going to have a stroke if he doesn't get rid of that phone. To bad there is not a hack software to get windows off of the phone. And they wonder why their sales are down! Just plain stupid.

Actually, using Windows Mobile was a pretty smart move on Palm's part. It would've been better if they released every single device on both Palm OS and WM, but I'm pretty sure carrier interest stopped that from happening.

Windows Mobile is a much more viable platform than Palm OS because it's still being actively developed. It has room for improvement, and improvements will be made. Palm OS really hasn't changed much at all in years, and it's dead. Granted, it will still work years from now, but it's still going to be the same, and more and more developers will drop support for it.

I got your email, but unfortunately, I cannot help you out. I'm not familiar with Windows Mobile Treos.

As for the Centro, so that will be yours?
