Using Kocoman's 755 update flash into 700 for the VZW 755 update

Hiya, I'm starting a new thread because this is a little different and because the original thread is Lonnnnnnnnnnnnng. Before continuing to read my thread read through @ least the first two pages of KocoMan's Thread.

Ok welcome Back 

I need for a daring Verizon (power) 700p user to try and follow the same procedure with the newly released Treo 755p Updater for Verizon - OFFICIAL 1.08 and report back to this thread.  I'm seeking the following information (for myself and the MTDN Community):
 

• Does it work
• the new things I might get by doing it. With Sprint they got a IM Program, A2DP, a ROM-based Googlemaps, the ability to do Voice Gateway over BT, and something in SMS; plus we (VZW users) already have both Bejewled and Sudoku

  If nobody's done it by December, then I'll do it (by first using my New Every Two to get another 700P)

Yes I am a power user but not very daring when it comes to mucking with the firmware of my only phone.
The Other reason for the reluctance (and New Thread) is Verizon is a beast for locking up parts of their phones (for instance the data network is not changable (it's locked) with VZW Treos) so that has stopped me from trying KocoMan's wonderfully implimented firmware change.

I sent out notifications to interested parties who had VZW from the KocoMan thread
I received one PM today from Wayne who I see is here  (because it's Christmas to have Wayne join me in ALL Treo experiments)
and One PM from "grundgi"

I'll give it shot but not sure what set of instructions I should follow. can you help me by referring me to the instructions original instructions?

In order to make it a little easier I'm going to post those instructions here later after I confer with kocoman; however everyone Needs to realize that their experience may be very different than this (though I don't think so because both threads are using CDMA Treos  )

Also Wayne, since you tried the initial update (with the sprint but couldn't get your VZW network so reverted back)  Maybe you could share you experience

could you look at our two updaters (755 and 700) and help.  There will be  kudos for you from all the members of my thread and also you can claim the fame of doing it (as you have with the sprint customers) It's know all around MTDN as the "Kocoman Method"-and I'll sing high praises to you for success.

Hallo it's me. . . I've Done it.  With success my 700p is now a 755VZW Rom.
The info string in the Phone info is still as a 1.10 700p so I don't believe that free software for the 755 (such as voice dial) will work as if you installed it on a 755 (i.e. Voice Dial will still only give you the 14 day trial) but the ROM does have GoogleMaps on it (1.1.2) and D2Go to (8.002)
(However I believe you maybe could use ChangeName to create a fake ROM string which may allow you to get past this too)
I've already switched my phone number to my Centro so I can't verify this but I believe that the "Annoying" DTMF tone played during ringtones is either gone or at least very very quiet.  and you should experience a more stable device (from anecdotal evidence and dependent on your 3rd party software/load).
ALL THINGS CONSIDERED THERE IS NOT MUCH DIFFERENCE IN THE 700p 1.10 ROM AND THE 755 1.08 ROM.
PM me if you want instructions on how to do it, if I get enuff PMs I may Post instructions here and/or post/direct you to my files on a rapidshare (I don't have an account but successfully posted it for free there for another tester).  But really I don't see much (any reason) why someone would want to do this (on a VZW phone to a VZW phone) past an academic reason.
Unlike Sprint we were not given a IM program and so all we get is an outdated GoogleMaps and an Outdated D2Go 8 but it's up to you.

LOL, Andy I might drop dropped you a link to a Dropio, (CYM) but I think for now I'll mostly keep it where I sent you before, I'd actually have to remember to make the download last longer than a year if I hoped to upkeep it at dropio (AFAIK Rapid****¹. . . errr rapidshare. . . doesn't have a timelimit it's just x-tremely slow (17 min for my 20MB zip² file sigh).  ****¹ I got a palm so that I didn't have to remember things

The Flashed ROM is working great on my phone.

It reprogrammed successfully via *228
Verizon Custom Applications Work fine - i.e. Verizon Wireless Sync
Blazer etc fine..
Tethering my laptop through the phone worked!!!

The Waiting seemed worth it.  No real problems and seems a bit more responsive and definitely more stable (no noticeable lags yet but I don't have all my software installed but some heavy hitters like, Takephone, Datebook, Chatter with 6 accounts (mostly IMAP some POP).

I can't vouch for the recovery process if someone decides to go back but I'm assuming reflashing with the 700p V1.1 update from Palm Website should fix most anything.

Actually You use KocoMan's Revert Package

make sure you are showing file name extensions in your folders

Extract the contents of the rar package to a folder somewhere

Copy the Following files to a rom directory on your BLANK SD (note if I don't list an extension use the version that does not have an extension.  it'll have a blank icon NOT the Palm (prc/pdb) icon)

ventura-rom.zip
ventura-rom.zip.md5
ventura-spl
ventura-spl.md5

Copy the Following Files into launcher folder in a palm folder (note this is assuming you are using a English version adjust if you are using a different language) (note2 you can also just reuse the Launcher folder that you used in the original convert, the one I provide for you in my package)
RomUpdater.prc
RomUpdater_enUS.oprc (also change the name of this to RomUpdater_enUS.prc)

Pop your card in and run the romupdater program
type ventura
and it will go through the same dealy as before, when it resets you'll have your vzw 700p back

P.s. Grudgi let me know if you try the changename method to modify your ROM String and load some of the freesoftware from mypalm.com. If so, I can add Changename to the package.  I may try this if I get some time this week and remember to bring my old phone with me to work.

Not sure that ChangeName would be what youd need, as it's the ROM string in question, not the DeviceID or HSID - PPU had a new app recently that is eggsactlee what you'd need tho. I'm not posting the link or name (not that it aint obvious) on purpose because the very thought of that app and what it could potentially do - tho definitely not obtrusively illegal - is pretty scary .

Yeah I wasn't sure about changename, it says that you can change the ROM string on OS 3  and 4 and I was giving even odds that it might or mightnot allow rom string changes.

now you can fake the FlashRom serial number and the OS version (string).

  I agree it's a scary prospect to change this string but hey it's (not as equally) scarey to stick a different rom into the chip and tell it ehy no really thats the rom you want

Hahahaha - no need. I'll just post about it, since it's only potentially scary n e way. PPU I mean PalmPowerUps (you kno - UDMH, WarpSpeed, etc.), and mr G wrote a beta SetROMID or something like that. It's in the freeware betas there
