Which phone screen do you prefer?

Help me with this bit of research. If you have reasons behind your choice, feel free to state your case.

While I realize many of us use "wrappers" and don't view the main phone screen much, I'm looking for the basics.

Here are photos of each -

"Traditional":



Treo 680/GSM Centro:

I guess my main reason is that I've always been on CDMA, and that's what I'm used to. 

I think if I got used to it, then...

I'm going to say Traditional, although truly I'm teetering on the fence.  I've used both, and while I like the GUI of the 680 phone app, the colors are drab/unappealing.

Even though, in my opinion, it is easier to move around in than the Traditional layout, I was always confused by the choice of icons at the bottom, and could never wrap my widdle brain around which tab was which. 

I'm sure that makes no sense... *sigh*

I prefer the traditional view due to less steps to get to the goal of dialing the number. I use the default dialer most of the time; however, the wrapper I prefer is TakePhone. Ben

the second one, treo 680/gsm

hands down b/c its such a fresh look. maybe if the number buttons looked a tad better in the traditional i'd think about it twice.

I prefer the 680 display since you can choose your default view. I have mine default to the Favorites since that's typically where I make my calls from. Rarely do I use the dial pad for calls. I like having the tabs for Contacts and the Call Log but I don't quite understand the Main tab (the one you show in your post). It's not of much use and I could do without it.

I'm just trying to figure out what Palm was thinking by using that dialer in the GSM Centro, rather than the traditional screen that's in every other Treo.

I prefer the 680 display since you can choose your default view.

Somehow I never noticed that - must be due to my reliance on Ultimate Phone...but that's enough to tip me to the 680 version of the phone app screen. That would have helped with my inability to tell the tabs apart.

I voted GSM Centro Version.  I agree, it's new.  I've used both.  I liked the older style on the 650, but having a new way to move around is a nice way of me feeling like I've really got a new phone.  Figuring out why Palm used the newer dialer in the Centro GSM and not the later releases of Palm Treo/Centro devices since the Treo 680 is a lot like trying to determine how many licks it takes to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop - The world may never know. 

I used to use the dial pad as the main screen for the dialer, but now I just use a random wallpaper image like the one below.

I spent over three years on a Treo 600. then a 650, & now on 680 for three months.  I do like the 680 screen now.  I like the middle 'phone' tab since it allows me to set the screen picture (I use it to keep myself focused on my current highest priority) AND when in that view, it is unlikely I will initiate any action when I touch the screen accidentally.

What I do NOT like is the color scheme they chose. The white characters on the light gray background are NOT easy to read. I have considered some of the other available phone apps, but all the ones I have seen look a little cartoonish for my taste.

Lastly, I did like the TWO column view of the favorites screen more than the current single column view.

They should offer a THIRD alternative, that combine the best options from both...

- Return to Treo 600's effective use of space... Because in 680 / gsm centro does you first lose the last line in the contact and "last calls" view, under the too high graphic (that easy could be half as high) and then is another line lost, when they moved down the category selection to a separate line... Just as they also did in the Tasks (ToDo) application, without any good reason - yes, the category selection could be done at (instead of) the dummy "Category" text!!!!

- Then will you even lose a third line in Treo 680 / gsm centro, reducing 11 lines to only 8 in the vital contact view, when they suddenly give the "up and down arrows" an entire line!!!! They could instead use scrollbars or place the arrows at the otherwise useless "contact" button!

- Then was Treo 600's favorites in two table / columns much smarter, too...

- But the possibility to select the default start view in Treo 680 / gsm centro, is a great move and I prefer just now to begin at the "last calls" view, becase I use to call some friend most often... But I will naturally change my default to "Favorite" view, when I get time to arrange them...

- And one poster above was completely right, pointing out that the "Main" view is just waste of space!!

- But you should also be able to dial a number (and not have to select numbers at the keyboard) in the "Favorite" view AND the "last calls" view...

I've gone from the 650 and 680 on AT&T to a Centro with Sprint, so I've used both and I much prefer the 680/gCentro phone app.  It's much more thumbable.

Considering that the 680 and gCentro are both on AT&T I think the WHY is rather obvious.  Even though the 755p is 6 months newer than the 680, it was saddled with the old phone app.  The new phone app is exclusive to AT&T for what ever reason.  What ever the details of the deal, that is AT&T's "edge" if you care to think of it as such.

The gCentro is also offered as an unsubsidized device, but AT&T's network is why the gCentro exists.

Glad I have UltimatePhone so I don't have to worry about it. But I do wonder about these things!
