I'm glad you were able to reproduce.

BTW the soft reset isn't necessary.  I only added that to make sure nothing else was running in the background.

At any time I can dial *2 and hangup and TGP will be in effect.  At any time TGP is in effect I can dial 123 and hangup and TGP will be fixed.

applaud Well son of gun, I reproduced TGP on my Centro using your steps sfhub! I've done it once and will try more (it's kind of a long process). So is it limited to the 680 - from what you report your Centro is experiencing what the 680 users report as TGP (nice log post BTW).

I'm currently working on a feature for PH to do a reset, cycle phone, or alert if TGP is detected. It could be used for any Treo.

Dan

the common denominator is the newer phone app of the 680 & Centro, or some common chip perhaps?

My guess is the phone app also.  Probably in the cleanup code to close a connection some sleep mode call is missed.  I'll even guess that it might be some race condition where if the phone connection closes too quick, the call to allow sleep mode never gets a chance to get called (ie some async event comes in that says connection dropped prior to sleep mode being called), but if the connection stays open a normal time period, everything works.  *2 probably closes the connection faster than a normal call when you hang up.  This is all blind guesswork.

I use bluetooth, network, 3rd party GPS app, sprint TV, VPN, VNC, and everything except the phone app and my sleep drain will still stay at 3 mA.

When I dial *2 (or apparently when I dial a normal # and the other side hangs up first) sleep drain goes up to 37 mA.

Knowing this limitation, I was able to reset the phone module and last night, 7.5hrs of sleep and my Centro only used 2% battery.  I know that doesn't sound like a big deal for most users, but for a Centro user, it is a huge deal.

I didn't work out the numbers exactly, but with TGP my phone uses around 4%/hr.  Let's say 7am to 9pm was a typical day, that means 56% of battery life is used in sleep mode.

In a 24hr period, 96% battery is used just in sleep mode.  That is crazy battery drain when the phone is doing nothing.

Bluetooth connection probably uses around 10mA on my phone when idle.  TGP uses around 34mA.  When TGP hits it is 3x the problem of bluetooth.  Problem with TGP is there isn't a nice Bluetooth icon that lets you know it is in effect.

Well hello Dig! In Power Hero 1.18 I temporarily took out the fast drain option because of the very thing you are running into (i.e. the option isn't smart enough yet). I bought a 680 so I could reproduce this problem myself but I'm having no luck. I was just about to ask for help before I saw your well-timed post.

Could you do me 2 favors? First, install PH 1.18 and after you've seen TGP a couple times send me the log (instructions in the link in my signature)?

Second, give me some tips on how to reproduce TGP? I've followed the steps in your posts over at Treocentral but no success. I started with a clean 680 w/firmware 1.09 which I'm going to update to 2.11 tonight.

Thanks and welcome to the forum!

Dan

I have been away from this forum for way too long. I'm having ongoing battery problems for some time. I think there is something wrong with my 680, more than just battery drain, but want to check to see if it is related to the battery problems common to all 680s.  Basically, I get intermittent notifications that the charge on battery is extremely low. Happens sometimes as often as every four hours or so.  Sometimes happens shortly after removing from charger showing 100% charged. Sometimes merely by selecting an app - usually power hero - the indicator shows actual charge. Sometimes I have to reset the phone.
I have logs that show this phenomenon.
I thought I'd check here first since this is about the only place that seems to have expertise in this area. Would you be interested in taking a look at a log? If so, should I it post here or email it to you?

I have a quick question regarding expected usage of battery. On my Verizon 755P I see anywhere from 131MA to 160MA with nothing on but the phone. Is this a normal amt of discharge? The reason I'm looking into this naturally is I'm having some questions about my battery life and try to find culprets. Also, the 1.21 version of power here doesn't seem to be adding the discharge rate to the log entries. Is that a preference selection I'm missing?

Thanks,

Yep, that's a normal range though the most telling numbers are the mA values on the Usage Info dialog. You want to see low numbers for Sleep (on my main phone 700p I get 10-15 mA) and not much time spent in REM Sleep.

The "log drain rate every 5 minutes" option is coming back in the next beta 1.22. I took it out thinking the Drain Saver feature could be a substitute, but it really isn't.

Thanks for the post,
Dan

Well that breaks it down so I can understand it. My Treo doesn't have much energy because it isn't sleeping well Wink What I see for yesterday is 35:56 of REM with 263 mA, and 7:36:27 of sleep, with 49 mA. Seems like it's chewing through a bit too much juice while it's sleeping. I wonder if this is indicative of a bad unit, or misbehaving software? Could a bad battery be the cause? This is a new 755 as of a couple weeks ago. I suppose I could do a hard reset and install nothing more than Power Hero and see what the result is. Any other suggestions?
On the up side. my registration is going off today. So far PH and Butler are my must have apps. I registered Butler almost as soon as I got the Treo, and PH is an amazing app. Thanks for your work on it.

That's my hope too. The only things I've got that SHOULD be disturbing it's slumber, is SnapperMail, which checks a couple accounts every 45 minutes and the weather app from Deluxeware which should check every 12 hours.  I wouldn't think either of those should cause much of an issue, but I suppose I'll see when I start putting things back on one at a time.

Well, score one for the "software conflict" theory, sort of. I did a hard reset and only sync'd back my PIM data, and Power Hero, and my battery performance was great. Sleep was between 9 and 14 mA. As soon as  I put SnapperMail back on it, the battery usage went right back to terrible, and during sleep, the usage went up to 50 mA or so. And this is with nothing else but PH loaded. I could see it using a little bit more battery because it has to wake up every 45 minutes to get mail, but the drain during sleep seems a bit boggling. I'll open a ticket with the Snapper people and see how it goes.

Well, I'm glad I found this thread.  My Centro normally discharges at about 10 mA while asleep.  I just dialed *2, hung up, and now it discharges at 50 mA while sleeping.  Sheesh!

OK, so I got everything reloaded on my 755P, except Snapper. Battery just fine. Loaded Snapper with no auto delivery, battery still just fine. Near as I can tell, it was a case of auto delivery coupled with what is typically low cell reception at my desk. My solution is to let Power Hero kill my phone connection for 5 minutes when it's weak, coupled with no auto delivery of email from 8 to 5. That's a pretty workable solution for me, since for most of that time I'm at my desk with access to email on my laptop.

umm...
i dont know if this is weird but for background power usage it has 1:51 but it has the highest mA, 1110. As soon as i take my 700p of the charger, the graph shoots down. my discharge rate is 360mA. Huh?
