Hi DIG,

The trail has turned cold in the search for TGP. You were the only one who sent me a log from a true TGP episode. I was hoping to get more logs from others so I could look for patterns. And I couldn't reproduce TGP on my newly acquired 680.

At this point I'm not very hopeful of finding the cause of TGP. I'm working on adding more statistics to track the daily time spent in the sleep and REM states and the power consumed in each state. Then add the options of cycling the phone, soft reset, or triggering an alert if a power consumption threshold set by you is passed. Basically the same concept I had in 1.17 but more flexible. The idea then is that with the added info it is up to the user to configure the settings to their needs.

Hi Dan
I think if you add flexibility to the anti-TGP system you set up in 1.17, that would do the trick. Most importantly, if you can choose the amount of time before doing a phone radio cycle this would have fixed it for me.
Cheers
DIG
PS. If you submit a thread over at TreoCentral, you may find a few more takers who are interested in overcoming TGP.

Greetings,

I like the ideas about resetting, cycling and alert.  I am surprised that more logs haven't been submitted.  I haven't had an event since I originally posted, go figure.  As the previous user suggested maybe some user at treocentral.  However I can't believe that it has just gone away.

I don't know your intentions about the way PH will correct the problem/problems.  If I might make a suggestion ?
As I stated before in a different post I believe their is more than one problem.  TGP and "others".  Perhaps an incremental correction.

1.  Send Alert....wait a defined period of time.  If no action/change...

2.  Cycle phone....wait a defined period of time.  If not corrected...

3.  Soft reset...wait a defined period of time.  If not corrected...Give up.

The idea of user defined max limits is also good.  Some have huge drains, other not as huge but still problematic.

Regards and good luck,

Larry

Greetings,

Sorry for the long post.  Thought it was interesting.

I haven't had this in months.  Yesterday I was installing and uninstalling some clipboards and launchers.  They didn't play nice so I deleted them.  Normally I would hard reset and use last backup and restore.  I did not do that.

I have NvBackup scheduled to backup and check time at 21:30.

It looks like I was playing with it near midnight.  Don't remember using phone, may have something to do with the gin.
A complete different story.  Don't know what happened at 05:14 ?

Needless to say this morning ... nothing.

I firmly believe that a reset anytime after midnight would have cured the problem.

Regards,
Larry

Okay. Good idea about posting over at TreoCentral. I'll make that post after making some tweaks to PH.

Hi Larry,

Thanks for the posts and log.

That's a good idea, though I'd probably tweak it a bit to be;

1) Alert
2) If alert not responded to optionally cycle phone or soft reset.

So your log. You know, I had a very similar experience a few months ago on my 700p. Since my battery has a higher capacity than the 680 it only drained down to 56%. If I didn't have PH I would have dismissed it as heavy usage the previous day or less time on the charger.

Anyway, I still have no idea what is going on. I want to get a new beta out with new features to help everyone out.

This TGP is quite annoying for me.

I was reading reports from people that the Palm Centro battery life was great as long as you never used the phone.  I thought they were saying this in jest, but it is literally true.  After you use the phone the battery drain increases 10x for true sleep mode.

I have a Palm Centro on Sprint and this TGP is 100% reproducible with no effort.

All I have installed on a brand new Centro is NVBackup and Power Hero 1.18.

To reproduce, I just call *2 (customer service) and hangup (using End button, using touch screen, it doesn't matter)

Prior to the call my drain is around 109mA with backlight at 20% and everything in Power Hero turned off except Phone.

After the call it will jump, but then settle down to around 154mA.  It will never get back down to 109mA.

In this state, if I let the phone go to REM sleep, then sleep, I notice the drain is always around 35mA.  Prior to making the *2 call it was around 3mA.

I can't believe this problem has been around for so long.  Most people with Centro's think the mail app is the problem and while there is a problem with VersaMail checking wrong passwords forever, that only affects people using VersaMail.  TGP is a problem that probably affects 99% of the Centro users out there.

So it seems like this problem started with Treo 680 and still lives on with Centro.  It seems clear the problem is related to the phone module not going back into sleep mode properly.

It is silly for me to have to toggle the phone radio (or call a fake #) to work around this bug in Palm's phone.  Is there a way to force the phone radio into sleep without cycling the phone radio?  I would much rather the side button be a shortcut to toggle the sleep mode on the phone radio rather than a shortcut to toggle keyboard backlight.

On my 755p, if I do what you described, the drain drops to 66 mA when it goes into REM sleep, then it goes into sleep and the drain drops to the usual 6 mA. Whatever is happening with this phenomenon, it's not consistent.

I get the behavior you describe when I use the network, then let it go to sleep.  It will be around 67mA, then at the next 5 minute interval of logging it is recorded at 3mA, so somewhere in between the module properly went to sleep.

I can easily believe it isn't consistently reproduceable in the way I described on other models.

However on my Centro it is very consistent with stock software (only NVBackup and Power Hero loaded).  NVBackup is configured for manual backup only, nothing scheduled in the background.  Given I have so little software running there is a reasonable chance it does the same for other Centro users on Sprint.  Of course there could be other factors like whether you are on EVDO or 1xRTT network or something else not immediately obvious.  I figure if other Centro users try *2, we might be able to narrow it down further.  Also if PH developers were able to reproduce the problem at will it would aid them in finding a workaround or diagnosing the problem.  I think this problem is especially annoying for Centro users because of the smaller battery.  It is harder to go a full day w/o recharging.

I have tried *2 (listen to a few seconds of voice, hangup) after a pull-the-battery reboot, after initiating a data connection, and after shutting down phone module and restarting.  It is always reproduceable (for my almost stock configuration)

I can workaround the problem (as described by others) by toggling the phone module or dialing a bogus # and hanging up.

I might have gotten the wrong impression, that this a problem that started on the 680 and is still there on 690/Centro.  I didn't realize it was also a problem on 7xx.  Which models are affected TGP?

I looked at your log that you posted here:
http://mytreo.net/forum/index.php/topic,60870.0.html

And that doesn't look like TGP that I was reading about.  My understanding of TGP was not a general catch-all for battery drain problems, but rather a specific phenomenon where the phone module would not properly go to sleep and the result was the sleep drain went from 3 mA to 34 mA and stayed that way forever until a workaround was done like cycling the phone module or dialing a phone # (fake or real) and hanging up.

Is the TGP described above something you are also experiencing on the 755p?

applaud Well son of gun, I reproduced TGP on my Centro using your steps sfhub! I've done it once and will try more (it's kind of a long process). So is it limited to the 680 - from what you report your Centro is experiencing what the 680 users report as TGP (nice log post BTW).

I'm currently working on a feature for PH to do a reset, cycle phone, or alert if TGP is detected. It could be used for any Treo.
