Before you attempt to do a custom ROM[/size]

I cannot stress enough to newbies here and to custom romming, if you do not have the time or want to take the time to study this thread and the references to TC, then you should not attempt a custom ROM!!!

Never attempt a custom ROM without backing up and saving an undisturbed copy of your ROM

If you don't have the time to follow the step-by-step instructions in the MTDN Knowledgebase, then you do not have the time to do a proper custom ROM.

Never delete a file that you are not certain what it does, nor if it is not posted somewhere in this thread that it is safe to delete.

Hey folks...
I read the posts here and at the other site for about a month, followed all instructions and.......
Had Alltel CDMA 1.05-
ORIG ROM: largest 10.3 (geez), used 8.4, wasted 1.9MB...

ROM TOOLED OUT:welcome, real, tutorial, all non-essential langs, and changed to FAT32...

Then repartitioned using SD ROM updater...

Now Largest ROM 7.1, Used 6.7, waste .4 MB....

This is so wonderful - I've reclaimed 3.2MB -
I Appreciate all at MTDN being willing to share their experiences and solutions!!!

Cheers all,
John Grin

Congratulations John, and I'll bet you know a great deal more about your Treo now than you did when you started.  It's a great learning experience and satisfaction KNOWING that you can TWEAK your own custom ROM and gain 10% of your memory back.

Another KFU for a good job.

I second that Springer!!! KFU
I read all the pages on two sites before attempting even the slightest adjustment. I am so glad I did.
I started by downloading my original ROM as a folder, then as a zip file. Then I put all those on a CD. Then I did as Springer says. Never deleting anything... but moving those files to a "deleted" folder... I also have an "added" folder that has a copy of everything I've added... I also have multiple copies for each set of changes... so that I can not only go back to the original, but back to any one of the versions that seemed to work. The whole thing still doesn't take up half a CD... and since I used a CDRW, I update it after each session...

I've only had my 650 for ~two months and only did my mod a couple o weeks ago, but I haven't had problems that I can say are because of the mod. In fact, I've had fewer resets and better performance since the mod. Grin

My personal feeling is that this topic should be stickied and locked Huh? I think most problems have been covered here and most of the last couple of pages have been cries help which could be dealt with by PM, but the longer this thread gets the less likely it is to be read thoroughly???

I certainly agree GOC!!!!  everything that one needs to know is already here.  I thought it was "stickied" in the very beginning, with all the new Treos coming out, there is really nothing new to be added.

I would also like to see a moderator "lock" this thread, as most of the more recent post, as you say have have been cries for help.

It has come to our attention that just about all the facts you would need to build a custom ROM are already in this thread. Please read through all the posts carefully, and if you still have problems, feel free to start a new thread. But be warned that people will be more willing to help you with information that is not already in this thread.

That being said, I'm closing this thread.
