Realize tool is made so you don't have to hard reset before using it but I've tried it both ways and works just fine with my Sprint CDMA either way.

I tried it both ways also handquake andit worked fine.  The only reason I did the hard reset was that I wanted to start with a FRESH unit to see what the gain actually was.

This is not meant as a Tutorial, but is the Plan that I laid out prior to creating my Custom ROM.

The plan I setup and followed for the Custom Build was:

1.  BackUp, BackUp, BackUp,  Yes I did 3, 2 to SD Cards and one to my PC

2.  Hard Reset, erased everything (not necessary, but I had decided to re-build prior to deciding to try the Custom ROM)

3.  Installed the software to the PC (per mmastrac thread)

4.  Created in a small corner on my Desktop, shortcuts to the Filelist, ROMTool Instructions, and ROMTool.exe

5.  Created 4 empty folders (adjacent to the above shortcuts):  TreoROM Orig, TreoROM OrigZip, TreoROM Update, and TreoROM Delete.

6.  Connect cable/cradle to Treo/USB Port (Plug in power)

7.  Close HotSync Manager

8.  Reset the Treo and  hold the HotSync Button until the BootLoad Screen appears (Red, Green, Blue, and White.)

9.  At this point, Windows will find a new device, and the hardware wizard will start.  Select a location and point the wizard to where the ROMTool Drivers were saved.

10. Launch ROMTool and a log file is created at the bottom with a Green Status Bar indicating the progress, when everything is ready Device Status is Connected and Treo 650 ROMTool Splash Screen shows up on the Treo.

11. Back Up - Download ROM to  a Zip + MD5 to the Output Directory "TreoRomOrig Zip" that was created on the Desktop

12. Back Up - Download ROM to  a Directory to the Output Directory "TreoRomOrig " that was created on the Desktop

13. Copy the contents of the "TreoRomOrig " Directory to the "TreoROM Update" Directory (This left the "TreoRomOrig " directory as an undisturbed backup of the actual ROM and then gives a working copy in the "TreoROM Update" Directory

14. Delete (move to the "TreoROM Delete" directory) applications in the "TreoROM Update" Directory (apps that you want deleted from ROM) using Windows Explorer, just like you would in any windows directory.  By moving them to another directory, you can always move it back and rebuild in the event you make a mistake.

15. Click on the Upload Rom Tab and select the source directory "TreoROM Update"

16. The directory will be compressed and the MD5 file built for you.

17.  If apps are added, then when complete you will see the final size, if too many apps have been added and the file is too large, it will show in big red letters "TOO BIG".  If the file is too large, delete some files and rebuild.  The larger the Wasted Space (Free Space) the better.

18.  Click the upload button, take a break, the upload will take several minutes.  When Upload has completed, close the ROMTool program and reset the Treo.

19. DONE

...  and what would you expect from someone retired from the same profession as Lizz  uhoh

I was apprehensive at first, but when I saw how easy it was with this tool, I got over it real fast!!!  I spent much more time reading about it that I did working on it.

Truth be known I was scared stiff first time used Shadows tool and this was no exception. Not a big poster here ('cept movie tutorial) and NEVER have posted at TC but this was too good to be true. Once I saw how it worked, I realized that recovery from a failure was the really really beautiful thing. Two minutes in I realized it was way way (really really and way way in the same post; it's just that good) safer! Felt WAY more secure once I saw how Bootloader worked and you could recover from almost any failure. Add to that the support you get from mmastrac and shadow and everyone and it is a must try. Please donate so they will do the same for 700P.

....but this was too good to be true. Once I saw how it worked, I realized that recovery from a failure was the really really beautiful thing.

Absolutely, my First build popped up as ROM Too Big and I was scared to death, but it was not a problem, and from what I see a "true need to recovery from failure" is almost a mute point.

Once you see that on the initial connection to your Treo, you're doing nothing but extracting your current ROM from it to work with, then see the files opened in a tradition windows folder, delete a couple of obvious app like "GetGood", "Express Mail", and "World Clock", do a ReBuild and Upload, and see them gone from your Treo, you realize how painless it is.

Two minutes in I realized it was way way (really really and way way in the same post; it's just that good) safer! Felt WAY more secure once I saw how Bootloader worked and you could recover from almost any failure. Add to that the support you get from mmastrac and shadow and everyone and it is a must try. Two minutes is about what it took me also, to realized it was way way safer and really really easy!  I was amazed that there was no cost involved other than that mentioned by other posted (like you) regarding making a donation!  The best $10, I have spent on my Treo.

11. Back Up - Download ROM to  a Zip + MD5 to the Output Directory "TreoRomOrig Zip" that was created on the Desktop

12. Back Up - Download ROM to  a Directory to the Output Directory "TreoRomOrig " that was created on the Desktop

Note that you can shave a couple of minutes off this by downloading to ROM zip, then using the convert to extract the ROM zip to a directory somewhere.  Technically you can also just use winzip to unzip it as well, I suppose.  Smiley

Now that I think about it, I think the tool needs to cache the last downloaded ROM to save time...

Some data I put together regarding the changes in my Treo

ROM Size, RAM Size, and Free RAM were determined by FileZ
Largest ROM Size, Current ROM Size, and Wasted Space were determined by RomTool
DBCache Size, DBCache Free, and DBCache Max were determined by DBCacheTool
Speed was determined using Palm Internals

Have a look at the Treo 650 ROM FAQ in the Knowledge Base; at the bottom of the page is a list of some apps that are known to work or not to work in ROM.
