There are some that are less expensive than others, but none is free.

what would i do without my treo?

« Reply #20 on: 08 December 2005, 19:35:01 »

i've been fairly happy with mring (half the price of lightwav worked for me).
i had all my favorite people record a greeting with the treo's sounds->tones->new and assigned that recording as their ringtone (great to hear my grandbaby's giggle).
mring's new version 3.0 allows mp3 and wav and their beta adds midi, but doesn't allow the treo-recorded sounds as options.

what format does the treo record into? can those sounds be converted easily (without downloading suspect software)?

thanks,
-db

Alli, you remind me of myself a few years back when I was a manager in a call center and I would insist that my workers use their resources to answer every question possible.  If they asked me a question and we both knew where the answer was I made them go look it up. Smiley

Good job!

trying out the new mring beta (3.1). they fixed it so it again allows choosing a sound recorded on the treo as a ringtone.

they've also added a "profile" feature, which has great potential. i've used simple profile, but custom mring tones over-ride the "profiles" profile (e.g. profile set to silent still uses the mring ringtone).

i haven't tried lightwave or ringo so can't compare, but this is working great for me.

I've been a Lightwav user for a LONG time.  And generally it's been a great app.  A little unstable from time to time but definitely worth it.  However, it's time for Danny to start working on performance and stability.  It has the most features, followed closely by CallFilter, but is starting to get so bloated that the product has suffered and I've started to consider alternatives.  My experience:

mRing: simple, does one thing, which is to assign mp3, wav, or MIDI sounds as ringtones to either groups or individuals.  Cool feature is Profiles, which allow you to quickly change how you want the phone to ring, including an initial vibrate before the ring.  Best feature compared to the others is that it's FAST.  It rings right away, even when using categories with lots of contacts.  And, so far, solid as a rock.  No resets.  For me this would be a no-brainer choice if it had picture ID.

CallFilter: much more feature rich (I don't intend to list them all here as you can look 'em up)  but my favorite differentiating feature is the ability to have the phone tell you the phone number instead of ringing.  Downside is that you have to buy pTunes for wav or mp3.  I have an iPod and use TCMP...don't need to buy pTunes so I don't really want to shell out $15 above and beyond the cost of the program.

Lightwav: again, feature rich.  Better picture rendering than CallFilter, area code lookup is nice.  But since Pro 1.3 I get daily (at least) resets.  I did a hard reset and installed my apps over the course of week or so to confirm that it was Lwav.  It was.  Can't have that.  I don't use many of the features.  Nice to have though and since I own it I hope it's fixed before I spring for one of the others.  Biggest downside (aside from resets) is that, like CF, it has a bit of delay before the phone rings.

Im new to the website and treo.  I just purchased the ringpro to set individual ringtones to people and I have no idea how to save music from my cds to the sd card so that I can assign it to a ringtone.  Can someone please help.  The very very new person version please.

THANKS SANDS

You need a few steps, sands.  First you'll need to rip those cd tracks to mp3 format.  (You should be able to do this with WMP if you use Windows.)  Then to get them to your sd card, get a card reader - very inexpensive at WalMart or Best Buy.  You could also download PFB from the download section (free!) to transfer the music to the card, but a card reaer is the best way.

Have tried the freeware MiniTones on my Treo 650, and it works just fine. Just keep the ringtones short, as MiniTones is capable of loading that 3 mbyte song as a ringtone into your internal memory.
