Anyone had any success setting up the 650 as a hardware modem for a notebook?

I phrased my question wrong, and it got moved.  I am wanting to use my 650 as a wireless modem (usb is fine) for my notebook.  Is there a method to set this up? I don't need any apps really because I already have the VZW mobile desktop installed.  Thanks in advance for any help or advice you may have.  If I need to use BT that will be later.

Have you tried using PDAnet for the Treo 650?  The works very well as a modem

I did and it does not exactly fit what I need.  Plus the system never saw that the 650 was even plugged in to the cable.  I was on Me and the install seemed to finish ok, but I can't see in windows where the Treo exists in device manager

I know how you hate having your posts moved, copa...but...if ya wanna explore Pdanet - which is the BEST option, and I highly recommend it, we can move this thread to applications. 

If you wanna explore something that only you Verizon users have, it's gotta go to North America.

I hate to disagree with Alli but pdanet is the worst option, their custom driver is a disater that has caused me nothing but problems.

As far as bluetooth, the biggest problem that most people run into is with the default bluetooth stack used by sevice pack 2 in windows XP. If your notebook has sp2 on it, you have to remove the ms bluetooth stack, aparently even microsoft agrees that this is a problem and has graciously offered a solution:

Use the method that involves renaming bht.inf then reset your computer.

Now install the drivers that came with your notebook/bluetooth adapter, the restart again (will probably be asked by the installer). Now after this pair use your computer to pair the notebook to the treo, then after which browse the services on your treo and select to use DUN.

Now unfortunately I only know the dailup information for sprint, you'll have to hunt around for the number to dail and the username to use.

yeah sure, for sprint the number is #777, the username is your spcs email address SOMETHING@sprintpcs.com, and there is no password.

Thanks Tekara for your comment.  In fact, what you said is true, and what I am asking is a device driver suitable for ANY user, not just VZW customers.  I asked for a driver that the computer would use to see the treo in device manager as a USB modem, and specifically want to avoid wedges and "hacks" like PDAnet because they are going to be a headache later on (in fact it already did, and is difficult to remove once installed).  I want to use the basic (simple) DUN that Windows includes for this reason, and also for VPN and such.  Things like Citrix don't see 3rd party apps, but do recognise standard windows device drivers.  Basic drivers usually follow KISS logic   My7135 had one, all m motorola phones had one, and even older Treos have them, so it's a wonder I can't find this one,  but it may be the way the Treo connects (there is no FaxModem app either).

hehe, well I like that it's free, I primarily use it when I'm travelling it's reasonable internet service available about anywhere where I would be. Not having the cable connection means that my treo can be in my pocket and my laptop on my lap which works great if I don't have a desk or table top readily available.

I have a laptop and a treo 650.

I don't care if I have extra cables.

I have an ISP that has dialup numbers.



Is there anything i can get, (cables, software) that will let me use my laptop while travelling in my vehicle?  (well, not ME if I am driving, but someone in my vehicle having laptop with internet access).

I'm not worried if it's slow or performance, I just want to spend the least money to do it and see if I like using it that way.

Hmm with the DUN method, you just "dial up"  rather connect to your Carrier's internet service as if you were using the phone itself, that's the beauty of it, as it's pretty much transparent.  Your Treo just passes the data as if you were viewing it on the phone, but your laptop can cruise the net unfettered.  Or, if you wish, you may dial up a 3rd party ISP (my home internet has a "backdoor" number in case my DSL should fail, and can I use it on the road if needed).  You simply key in the same connection info that your phone would have for it's connection (i.e the Sprint #777 stuff or whatever your carrier would use), into the PC's settings. Simple is best, but free *and* simple is even better

yeah using the dun I just leech off my 15$ a month vision plan, nothing extra to it. Same deal as with pdanet. . . just without all the extra software.
